How is it that Newsweek can break the story about new iPods before anyone else (granted, it was obviously given to them) but the monthly Apple magazines are always three months or so behind the curve. Whatever comes out on Monday, we won't read about it in MacWorld until well into the college football season.

ps. I know that it's the nature of the publishing industry, but come on...

Well you could release it in MacWorld but then only the Mac people will see it and not the rest of the PC world.

Newsweek has more mass public appeal then some computer mag.

I'm sure MacAddict will cover it..(not in the upcoming issue but the very next months issue)

Er.......iPod mini prices? Maybe no change, since demand is so high.

$249 for 4 GB or $249 for 20 GB, 5x more!

Well, you can buy a loaded Focus for the same price as a stripped down Taurus. Some people just want the Mini. I tried and tried to explain to my wife that she could have a 15Gb regular ipod for about the same price, or a old 1st Gen 5GB from eBay for half the price but she just wanted the "cute one."
I guess if everyone thought the same way, the world would be a pretty boring place.

Just wondering 'cause i'll be in the US in the next week and would love to get a cheeper price on a pod (4g won't come out to the shelves for what, a month or two?)
Duff-Man says....supplies on the now "old" pods seem to be very very low according to some reports (I went to apple Canada store and it listed 5-7 days for shipment...hmmm) so I get the feeling that the new ones, except perhaps the 60GB, will be shipping immediately. any stock of the old ones that's out there may get reduced in price a bit but they usually get sucked up pretty fast if the deal is good...oh yeah!

I completetly understand why this is in Newsweek. My point was simply the irony of Mac magazines (World and Addict) being months behind a general interest magazine on a big Mac development.

Yep, I was not one of those people who were going crazy about the pricing of the iPod mini after MWSF. I thought it was too high, but I never made the seemingly rational argument that "for only a little more." Consumers often don't buy things because you could have a lot more stuff for a little more money (or if the rumor is true-the same money) but, well, because they're cute. :D

Good thing my 15GB is on ebay! I better get the payment from the winner b/f he finds out that the new ones are out!!

Hopefully the cram jam deal will work too....all it restricts is the mini's. I'm sure we could fight this if it came to it.

Well that would be nice, but AppleStore US states 3-5 bus days (and that's normal shipping time, isn't it?). I sure will be happy if I can get a 4g ASAP.

btw, could anyone in the Chicago area tell me how to get from O'Hare Airport to the nearest Apple Store and back (and how long it would take)?

Hmm, I can't help but think that they would still price the 20GB differently to the Mini - maybe $299 for the 20GB, $349 for the 40GB and $449 for the 60GB? This is still a $100 drop for the 20GB and a $150 drop for the 40GB giving at least some incrementation to the price levels between the lines...

hopefully... Music>Airtunes. !!! please?

I imagine that "Music" is simply a simplification of the actual interface so that people who've not seen an iPod up close figure out what its doing. They had to photoshop the iPod screen in anyway (according to other posters who know more about that than I do), so why not simplify the menu at the same time? "Browse" and "Playlists" at the top might not make as much sense to the uninitiated.

Secondly, wireless is not coming to the iPod for quite a while. WiFi and Bluetooth would drive the cost up at least $50 a unit while also dragging battery life *way* down. Plus, with the cradle option for attaching to a hi-fi system, wireless is a ridiculous luxury. What, you can't be troubled to walk over to your stereo? You gotta use the iPod like a remote control? I don't see that happening in the near future.

This part from the article is insane:

And couture maven Karl Lagerfeld's iPod collection is up to 60, coded in the back by laser etching so he can tell what's on them. "It's the way to store music," he says. Lagerfeld's tribute to the iPod is a $1,500 Fendi pink copper rectangular purse that holds 12 iPods.

I agree. People will think, well its only 50 more from the mini, and then its only 50 more to the 20. And each would then have a good market.

Bigger space on the mini would definitely be the best. But then again, Apple is already having trouble shipping current orders, imagine if a 10Gb mini came out...

an open iPod OS for other developers to add programs to it

This actually is kind of a good idea. If Apple put secret hooks into the Palm's OS and then "accidentally" leaked them, then developers could start writing safe hacks for the iPod to help people get more out of them. (Like the calendar started out as a hack, right?) While most iPod users would never hear about this stuff -- and thus they are saved the complexity -- a new "cult of the iPod" would come about. Kind of like all the people that hack Xboxes or Tivos...

Wow, this is really cool! I guess this isn't much of a rumor anymore then, is it? I'm really looking forward to Monday now! The updated form factor looks great, but I'm more interested to hear what other improvements have actuially been made in terms of functionality, battery life, etc. etc.

Good work my man. It is confirmed. I can't wait. I'll be up at 1am Monday, perhaps placing an order, how many others?

I can tell you, as a person who actually worked in the art department at Newsweek, they will NEVER change the content of an image, unless it's clear that the image is a photo-collage or an illustration. They will do a lot of retouching to make sure the image prints well, but in no way will they change the content.

I think it's safe to assume that there will be a firmware update. However, I don't think it'll be anything radical (like wireless). Otherwise, it'd be evident in the cover image or in the article.

What we've learned from all this:

1. New click-wheel a la the Mini. I don't know why some people think it'll be backlighted, but from the cover image, it just looks like a silver wheel as in the silver mini.

2. New menu items --> new firmware. As others have speculated the "Music" menu item seem to suggest that the new iPod might handle other medial, e.g. photos, in addition to music.

3. The 60 gig Toshiba drives are supposed to go into production in July/August so it seems likely that Apple will up the top end to 60 gigs.

4. No wireless. This is just a guess on my part, but if Apple put in something as radical was wireless, it'd be called out on the cover or in the article.

I hope all these iPod fans in New York buy a Mac for their next computer.
10% here we come!!

Steve's "Switch Plan" worked for me:

First: I downloaded iTunes for my Windows XP machine, so I could have a fast, classy, uncluttered way to organize my music collection for burning MP3 CDs to bring to work..

Second: a policy change at my employer locked down using any other software for playing music on their machines to Windows Media Player, using a really absurd-looking theme... Time for a portable player: enter 3G 20G iPod! :)

Third: After being so damn happy with my iPod, and in the market for a new machine, I purchase a 17" PowerBook. :D :D

Its been the best hardware/os purchase I've ever made...

I have a 2G 10GB iPod. I am missing the ability to make on the go playlists. I have been wanting to order a new one and I will order a 4G if my sister will buy the 2G off of me for a brotherly discount. She has been saving up to get one. (see what you have done Apple!)

OMG when i connect my ipod into itunes it shows the 4th gen ipod icon....

was it a different icon b4 version 4.6?

Worked for me too.

Bought my iPod in December of 2002 which eventually lead to the purchase of my 15" Powerbook in June of 2004.
