I completetly understand why this is in Newsweek. My point was simply the irony of Mac magazines (World and Addict) being months behind a general interest magazine on a big Mac development.

I think that's precisely it. It's not a big Mac development. It's a big music announcement.

See, a reasonable post with no jokes asking if you'd like fries with that. :p

does anyone else think that that iPods scroll wheel is a very subtle lavender color? It's definitely NOT aluminum like my powerbook...

Also I don't think those are "click" buttons, but touch sensitive LED's ala old Apple LCDs. This may be where confusion is coming in over a backlit scroll-wheel, it's not actually lit entirely or for an extended period of time, but either a "sphere" or lit letters will appear on contact/application of heat (Apple LED's power/display is heat/touch sensitive, touch it with a pen, piece of wood, anything at room temperature, no power up).

I don't really like the colored wheel, I'd rather have a colored screen.

So everyone who visits rumor sites will now know something
about a new iPod (no specs though).
Readers of Newsweek will find a page three mention
of a new iPod coming this week.
How many of of the public who aren't already users will know
that the magazine's cover is showing a new version?

Is there another public announcement that is yet to
happen via some "other" media?

I can tell you, as a person who actually worked in the art department at Newsweek, they will NEVER change the content of an image, unless it's clear that the image is a photo-collage or an illustration. They will do a lot of retouching to make sure the image prints well, but in no way will they change the content.

I think it's safe to assume that there will be a firmware update. However, I don't think it'll be anything radical (like wireless). Otherwise, it'd be evident in the cover image or in the article.

What we've learned from all this:

1. New click-wheel a la the Mini. I don't know why some people think it'll be backlighted, but from the cover image, it just looks like a silver wheel as in the silver mini.

2. New menu items --> new firmware. As others have speculated the "Music" menu item seem to suggest that the new iPod might handle other medial, e.g. photos, in addition to music.

3. The 60 gig Toshiba drives are supposed to go into production in July/August so it seems likely that Apple will up the top end to 60 gigs.

4. No wireless. This is just a guess on my part, but if Apple put in something as radical was wireless, it'd be called out on the cover or in the article.

N way that a firmware update would add wireless (needs hardware update).
I just read the Apple has requested 350,000 60gig HD from Toshiba per month here's that link:
http://maccentral.macworld.com/news/2004/07/17/ipoddesign/
wireless is not radical enough to make the cover...it has already been one...just not the Apple way. Also the article is mainly about the iPod culture. So features wouldn't make the cover anyways.

Well of course there is going to be additional media coverage on it on the news, etc., as well as Apple's main website being updated and the Apple Stores of course. Don't worry, iPods are huge, word will spread like wildfire...

Newsweek may not announce the product's specs

This leak is pretty interesting. We can see the iPod's new look on the cover. I've been following this thread and read the cover story on Newsweek's site (nice find!). All the Newsweek articles forum members have discovered have not mentioned the iPod's specs or pricing changes. Why would Newsweek not promote the new iPod for Apple by mentioning price, etc. ?

Isn't the cover story the logical place to plug the new iPod? After the stuff about our (and my) obsession with the iPod and its cultural impact, we'd see some info at the end about how Apple refined its design and came up with the latest generation.

Here's the only mention of the new iPod we have seen (besides the cover):

"But at the moment, the iPod is the category. And everything points to a humongous Christmas season for the iPod. The introduction of the new iPods this week extends the company's technology lead. "

On the site, the cover story has links to two other small articles, but no link to an article about the 4G iPod. I hope there's another article waiting to be discovered that will show us what we want to know. Could Steve be using Newsweek to generate buzz before he unveils the iPod at a seperate event later in the week, with one of his sales presentation? Back in 2002, was the new iMac unveiled with only a print article or with a keynote as well? Speculating about the new iPod will still be fun!

Duh. I was in no way implying that new firmware would unlock wireless in old iPods. New firmware and wireless capabilities are two different things, and the former does not in any way imply the latter.

wireless is not radical enough to make the cover...it has already been one...just not the Apple way. Also the article is mainly about the iPod culture. So features wouldn't make the cover anyways.
Of course, 'wireless' is nothing new. But wireless on a portable music player is unprecedented. Especially if this wireless feature is seemlessly integrated with iTunes/iTMS/AirTunes. Wireless on iPod has the potential to:

1. Use the iPod as a remote for AirTunes/iTunes.
2. Allow users to buy/download music on the go.
4. Wirelessly stream from your iPod to stereo, Mac, other iPods, etc.
5. Listen to radio streams on the go.

Many possibilities.

This doesn't really have anything to do with the next genereation of iPods...but I think a great little progression would be to use a ring of LED's around the scroll wheel. If you wake up the iPod, an LED under each of the for clicking areas could light up, then as you touched them they could momentarily glow brighter, or as you scroll, and LED lights up under your finger as you move it around the wheel...alsmost as if the wheel lights up wherever you touch it and a glow follows your finger...I don't know...just thinking out loud.

Actually the article is linked to itself and to one lame quasi-personal account of how the ipod has changed someone's life. It's unlikely that there is some separate unveiling, but you can bet that Steve will hit the talk show circuit to promote the new iPods.

As for the specs, it's quite possible that another article that details the new features will be posted later. Or the specs may appear in some sort of a separate graphic (something that shows the picture of the new ipod with arrows and call-outs detailing the new features) which we haven't discovered yet.

look for my picture

hehe, i think my picture is gonna be in that issue of newsweek. a friend of mine shoots for them all the time and she was cruising the subway stations here in new york taking pictures of people with ipods, and i bumped into her and of course had my ipod on me. so we took a few pics on the platform and on the escalators, with me fiddling with my ipod, or having it hanging out of my pocket, or holding it in the air and dancing. they probly won't use the dancing pics, unfortunately. :)

So what we have here is the same size iPod but with the four buttons relocated to an iPod mini clickwheel and 20/40/60 capacities. Hopefully they will have increased the battery life a little bit. A nice update but nothing really exciting which is why there is no major announcement for it. A small blurb about new models in an article about the iPods success is more than enough for this release.

I just wish we could all agree this is the 3rd Generation iPod. There have been three major designs: the original, the one with the buttons and now this one. There were slight revisions to the first one but nothing to constitute a new generation. Oh well. Splitting hairs I guess.

Looks pretty sweet. I might have to buy a new one soon. Although my original iPod from 11/2001 is still working flawlessly. Anyone else still using the original iPod?
Daughter still using the original 5GB

I don't think anyone posted this link yet but here's another article from newsweek's site. It's from the editor's desk section of the upcoming issue.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5457441/site/newsweek/
Interesting. "Based on his exclusive peek, Steven tells you what to expect from the new iPod that Apple will unveil this week." Sounds like there is something in Newsweek that will talk more explicitly about the new models. Probably another article we haven't discovered yet.

There will be an Apple annoucement but some details are in Newsweek

Interesting.

Check out this quote from the editor's story:

"Based on his exclusive peek, Steven [the writer, not Jobs] tells you what to expect from the new iPod that Apple will unveil this week."

Now we know Apple's going to be the one makingt the announcement but Newsweek will still gives us a taste! It's my bet that we will read Steven's report first here when another talented soul figures out where the story is hiding. Time is of the essence with this opportunity.

I love speculation and Feature requests

What I find interesting is the folks that want AirTunes in a 4G iPod are the same people complaining about battery life. Putting an 802.11g transceiver in the 4G iPod will drain the battery so fast, you will think aliens have sucked it dry. Even a iTrip consumes the battery quicker.

Oh and also, some want Airtunes and color screen. wow, where'd my battery go?

No, no no. Here is the gig. Put the 802.11g transceiver, for Airtunes, in the iPod dock. That way when you dock your iPod for charging, it can also transmit (and receive) over 802.11g. Your dock will most likely be plugged into the wall, so no battery drain, and good WiFi coverage. See i would have a Airport Express (which I love. GOt mine on friday) tied to the stereo in my bedroom, and have the iPod docked on the night stand. Place a number of the docks around the house and play to any AP Express device in the house.

Is this what Apple is planning? I have no clue. I just like using their products and admire their approach to technology and innovation.

Well, back to the think tank....

is it just me or does that picture look look some kind of animation. i hate to burst everyones bubble but it looks fake to me. anyone agree?

strange there is no article inteviewing steve jobs on the new ipod. You'd think there would be a mention of new features. It's fun to speculate. :)

Nope. We'll find out soon enough.

sorry for the caps but....
--->IT CAN NOT BE FAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!<---
its on the MSN/NEWSWEEK SERVER!!! plus there is a related article!!!! there probably is another article that hasnt been put on the site yet (aka, newsweek deal with apple) that has the features and specs of the new iPod.

Its good to see a next gen ipod but I think a metal look like the ipod mini would have been nice. Even if only silver (the biggest seller).

Umm... There have been many posts suggesting this article comes out this Monday (the 19th), because it coincides with the ThinkSecret rumor. However the Newsweek cover clearly shows "July 26, 2004" in the standard place. That'd be next Monday. Am I missing something?

Man this thing looks like ****... Let's face it: You can't get any better regarding the buttons on the current iPod. I mean no moving parts on the thing was perfect...

Now I'm pissed 'cause I'm getting forced to hurry and get a current one as long as they're still there...
