Umm... There have been many posts suggesting this article comes out this Monday (the 19th), because it coincides with the ThinkSecret rumor. However the Newsweek cover clearly shows "July 26, 2004" in the standard place. That'd be next Monday. Am I missing something?

The date on the cover is the date that stores are supposed to take it off the shelves. So the issue currently out now will say July 19 on it

I don't think anyone posted this link yet but here's another article from newsweek's site. It's from the editor's desk section of the upcoming issue.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5457441/site/newsweek/

I think this article shows that there is another section that hasn't been uploaded to the net yet, either that or its blocked. Looks like we are gonna have to wait until sunday night to find out the rest of the details :(

Instead of putting wifi in the ipod (power drain) Apple could just put bluetooth in there, they have it in cell phones which have the same sort of batteries as the ipod (With maybe less charge)that have bluetooth enabled and stay on for long periods of time. That would enable bluetooth headphones and also would allow syncing with bluetooth enabled computers (at least for addressbook etc.) I don't know the bandwidth for bluetooth and whether its enough for file transfer, but its definately enough for sound streaming.

Something to think about...

Someone earlier in the thread said that the reason why the iPod's battery gets drained faster, is because of a high quality headphone amp. They also said that the iPod has the best audio quality.

This is not true.

Because, the iPod's audio headphone amp, and sound processing, suck. Really suck. For example, an MP3 ripped from an AIFF, will sound better on an iRiver or Nomad, than the origonal AIFF, on an iPod. I'm not joking here.

What's really interesting, is the fact that Creative's players have really good headphone amps, yet still have ******* great battery life (The Nomad Zen Touch has 24 hours of battery life. Creative dosen't lie. Thier claims are accurate.). Also, they have players like the MuVo TX, which has an inbuilt FM radio, and is the size of your thumb. And it has good audio quality.

But keep in mind, that the iPod's audio quality is good enough for most people. So I highly recomend that you all get iPods, in order to support Apple. Creative still makes enough from thier players, as does Rio and iRiver. But for everyone who needs better audio, better features, and just plain better everything (like me), we'll stick with our iRivers and Nomads.

Go out and get an iPod. Now. But don't spread rumors about it having the best audio quality...

is it just me or does that picture look look some kind of animation. i hate to burst everyones bubble but it looks fake to me. anyone agree?

Uhhh, are you being serious or just that daft? After all the links and finding all this on Newsweek's server? And I downloaded the full sized JPG (from the other thread) if that's a fake there's a Photoshop retoucher who's so good he actually can paint within 1024 colors each individual pixel to it's perfect match of it's neighbor. Zoomed in there's not one pixel that's imperfect or suspicious (like it had the airbrush or any other tool on it), nearest members are continuous and without a doubt originals, as is these shots. Unless Steve Jobs is HOLDING fake unit R&D came up with for some inexplicable reason, then you'd have something (althought what, I'm not sure), I can tell you that iPod you see is what you see Jobs holding in that picture.

If it's fake I'll eat my shorts, if it's real you have to eat both my shorts and your shorts without water. Deal?

what are you smoking? ;)

Nothing new in that Levy article for the Mac faithful, but good press nonetheless. It is a bit disappointing that the only mention of computers was to lament the small market share. Not that Jobs could control what gets in there, but a little encouragement for iPod users to check out the Mac would have been nice.

The cover of the upcoming issue of Newsweek, dated July 26, 2004, will apparently feature Steve Jobs holding an iPod with this text:

Steve Jobs and The Must-Have Music Player Everyone Is Talking About
iPod, Therefore i Am

The cover can be seen at the MSNBC Newsweek site in medium and large sizes.

The issue should be shipping Sunday, on newstands Monday, and received by subscribers Tuesday.

You must be joking. That is the lamest bit of Photoshopping I've seen for a while. Look at the scroll wheel, bottom left - it fades away as if airbrush erased. And the colour correction is a shocker. Jeez, I'll have to go into selling bridges to passing tourists if this is the level of gullibility of the majority. I thought Mac Users were supposed to be more discerning...

Oh, and nice to see US Newsweek got its priorities right - new Iraqi titular head murders six in prison cell Vs modified personal music player. It's a difficult call I know but which might be of more importance to the state of play in the World...

Now to see what kind of features it has. Doesn't seem like a huge jump compared to the 1G/2G to the 3G. It's more of a half-step by looking at the picture..

Evolution not revolution. :)

lighten up.

by your logic, we should see iraqi war-related photos on newsweek EVERY week ......

Looks like msnbc.msn.com site went down along with newsweek.msnbc.com site.

Maybe, it's just me.

Oops! It's back again

Yeah, I am having the same problems with the newsweek site. One thing I was thinking is that the article talking about new features might be one of those subset articles. Where it is mainly a graphic image, with pictures of the evolution of the ipod, and then have some bullet points talking about the new features, price, etc all within the main iPod article. Just my two cents.

has it ever occurred to you where the images are coming from in the first place? as a graphic design major, i can understand the skepticism concerning the scroll wheel lookin' a little wierd... however, unless an employee of msnbc decided to have some fun, the credibility of the images retain some pretty high value imo. of course, anything is possible. let's just wait and see what happens this coming week :)

well, the articles are gone ... but once again the press did a misstake, apple won't be happy about it ... remember when the times came out too early with the tft imac on the front site?
history repeats itself ...

You must be joking, or a troll. You can clearly see the edge and shadows where the scroll wheel changes. In addition, I know someone who has received one of the early shipments of the new iPod for free. Apparently, pictures will be forthcoming, and according to him, my options were to post them on SpyMac or wait 'til Monday. Instead, he'll post them there. :p

Do you mean the hallowed halls of the media that fed us the lie about Iraq? Good God, how could I have been so stoopid not to trust the media?!?!

This doesn't really have anything to do with the next genereation of iPods...but I think a great little progression would be to use a ring of LED's around the scroll wheel. If you wake up the iPod, an LED under each of the for clicking areas could light up, then as you touched them they could momentarily glow brighter, or as you scroll, and LED lights up under your finger as you move it around the wheel...alsmost as if the wheel lights up wherever you touch it and a glow follows your finger...I don't know...just thinking out loud.
