Hey Jeffbax, to echo iChan, welcome...

How much more powerful do you want the 12" Powerbook to be? It already holds a candle easily to the 15" - I reckon it's an awesome buy at the moment, maximum portability and superb performance. But anyway, good luck when you do make the plunge.

What do you mean by smudging iPods? :)
Well, the 12" has a pretty lame video card, so while I don't seem to play many games anymore, it can't handle my favorites UT2004 and World of Warcraft (and probably not Doom 3 when it arrives on Mac)

So my next objective is probably another PC... but I hope one day I will be able to get a nice 12" PB :)

And I love the click wheel... I always hated the touch sensitive buttons... I prefer feedback from my actions and always thought touch sensitive was very awkward.

i do think apple will announce them tomorrow but then i don't think they will be availble for few months... what might happen is the 3g's could go down in price for now though...

My guess: If Apple goes to a mass outlet like Newsweek to make the announcement, availability will be immediate or very, very soon.

So I am one of the many with an ipod ordered but unshipped. Mine is set to ship on wednesday. I would cance it immediately but I'm ordering it as part of a cram & jam deal and the powerbook half of my order has already shipped!

Question 1: Is there any chance that my order will actually be filld with a 4th gen ipod?

Question2: If not, anybody think itll be possible for me to switch my order to the new gen and still get the cram and jam deal.

And as for the fine print on cram and jam, it excludes certain ipod models but otherwise says "any ipod". Seems that the 4th gen will have to be included unless they don't ship until after September 25th. But reports of near-zero stock of the 3rd gen ipods makes that seems unlikely.

Well, thanks guys
Charlie

Question 1/2: The Cram and Jam is a mail-in rebate that you have to download I believe. If you cancel your order for the iPod and save all the stuff from your powerbook box, then you can send it in when you buy your new iPod and get the discount I believe, at least, this is what I am planning on doing.

As the proud owner of a gold mini, I am about 500 times more qualified to speak on the addition of the clickwheel than most of the folks here.

It is a good thing. 99% of all sane individuals would realize that it's a tremendous improvement. 'Nuff said.

The clickwheel on the mini is not grey, it is white. However, it is a matte white that I can imagine may appear slightly grey under some lighting conditions when photographed. I think in person it will look like matte white. White, just not as glossy as the white plastic of the body. Big whoop.

I think the new iPod's clickwheel is backlit. On the mini, the writing for the different "buttons" on the clickwheel is grey. This writing is white on the new clickwheel, perhaps because light comes through, like on the backlit keyboards of the Powerbooks? We shall see.

Well, the fine print does specify that the items must be purchased together. Otherwise I would of course just cancel my current ipod order. Hell, if I had the money I would cancel my order just to buy the new one when it comes out, but I cant afford the full price right now. Im just hoping against hope that something works out for me . . .

ah you beat me but i'll put the quote

" You must purchase all qualifying Apple products at the same time on the same sales order to be eligible for the mail-in rebate"

To lower prices by 100 bucks when demand didn't even warrant such a drop is a refreshingly new and bold Apple tactic.

I know the details aren't out yet, but when Apple previously dropped the low end iPod, and lowered the price on the middle capacity iPod, they also dropped all the extras at the same time. When you factor in the cost of adding the extras in, there is no price drop.

Ex. Just before the current 15GB iPod became the cheapest, it sold for $100 more, but included the remote, a case, and a dock. Then the 15GB became the cheapest model without the remote, case, and the dock.

Apple didn't cut the price, they just stripped off the extras. I suspect they will do the same this time. The 20GB will sell for $299, but without any extras. A good price yes, but not as aggressive a pricing strategy as it could be. How about $299 with all the extras, that woulb be a new and bold tactic.

That's just a daggar in my heart, man. How I wish I could have a 4th gen. 5 more gigs for the same price!!

I think I'll wait until the official announcement comes form apple, and if the 4th gens are orderable before wednesday when my 3rd gen is supposed to ship, Ill call in and change my order . . . but this seems strange, because who wouldnt call in to change their order from the 3rg gen 15gb to the 4th gen 20 gb with no increase in price?! Thats what feeds my hope that a 20 gig 4th is already in store for me. Oh well. No use freaking out about it now.

You conveniently left out any mention of the 40 gig model, which, even if your post is proven valid, WILL have a nice, legitimate price drop.

I think the whole point is that there is still no $199 iPod which would enable Apple to absolutely OWN the market with somewhere near a 99% market share.

The mini should stay the same price. You pay for the form factor.

There should be more standard iPods though.

10GB - $199
20GB - $299
40GB - $399
60GB - $499

This isn't a capacity war. The people that already HAVE iPods are more likely to get the larger capacity ones. A 10GB at $199 would rule the world.

This is coming from someone who has a 80GB library of music and doesn't want to pay more than $200 for a player. I would "sacrifice" not having all of my music with me to save $100. And there are many more like me.

i can't believe they didn't expand the screen now with the extra space.

there will have to be some better features on the inside to get me excited.

But focusing on looks only, the 4G seems a step back. The minis have a white clickwheel appearing against a single colour in a sleek rectangular body. The 3Gs had the white face and metallic back. The 4G has thrown off the balance with a grey (or off-white) click wheel against the white face and the proportions look to have become more square. For some reason, it makes me think of SCUBA diving apparatus in that Newsweek photo (or maybe a kidney dialysis gizmo). Just doesn't look cool any more, but I hope I'm wrong and the photo hasn't done it justice.

Don't get me wrong, the prices are going down and I applaud that. I just wish Apple wouldn't strip off all the extras on the low end model. If you factor in the costs of the extras, the current low end model costs about the same as the mid-level model.

When faced with that decision last year, I bought the mid-level model and have been a happy iPod owner ever since. :)

And as I said/edited in my previous answer to your first post, you might want to consider using AAC and leave MP3 behind. I don't think you'll go above 160 or 192kbps with AAC.

I went to 224kbps AAC recently from 320kbps VBR MP3s. Can't tell the difference.

Charlie, I am in the same exact boat, only difference is that my ipod is schedualed to ship on the 26th. I know I will call in and see if I can get my ipod to be a 4G. The item that gives me hope is that I hear there are very few 3G ipod's left in stock, but I don't know that for a fact. I don't feel i'm in a position to be upset if I get an older ipod because hell, I got it for $69 but it would be cool to get the latest and greatest.

whoa!

I'm not sure if anyone's posted this article [edit, it has, i'm stupid], but it's is linked to from the main article:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5457434/site/newsweek/

has all of the details...

-- clickwheel
-- improved on-the-go support
-- 50 boost in battery life
-- lower price (2 models: 40 gig=$399, 20 gig=$299)

i'm getting one!

Well, the current 20 gig is $399.

The new 20 gig is $299. I do think that $299 is lower than $399.

Now it would be nice if they had a new 15 gig for $199 or $229 or so, but that apparently isn't happening.

yes, the 20gb is $399 (for the next few days at least), but people who purchase a 20gb want the MIDDLE line for a decent price.

so, if they buy the brand new 20gb for $300, they actually should be purchasing the 40gb for $400! that's NOT a savings... it's a marketing ploy and a good one at that...

Looks like my step-bro couldnt have more perfect timing for discovering his ipod had a defective hardrive.

Unless this one has some spiffy new features (besides size), i doubt anyone will be too excited.

I got so lit up when I saw the picture for a couple reasons:

1. 'Music' menu is pointless unless other media types are on the device too - plus the menu is too short for the screen now, so there was no point reducing browse/playlists to a single menu.

2. Blue background/black screen surround suggests a colour LCD

But then I think I read the article and thought 'oh, bugger.'

I can't say I know too much about the size of lossless files (I'm assuming they would be similar to the 128kbps AAC files they use for determining the '10,000 song' figures)

Lossless files are about half the size of the original CD Audio.

CD Audio: 1411 kbps
Lossless AAC: ~800 kbps
HiQ AAC: 192 kbps (c.f. 320 kbps VBR MP3)
iTunes AAC: 128 kbps

So on 40GB you could store 111 hours of Lossless AAC music, give or take a bit depending on what bitrate the audio can be compressed lossless at. For 4 minute songs, that would be 1665 songs.

Yeah. The deal seems to be geared towards liquidating the supply of 3rd gen ipods, but then why the overlap into the 4th gen? Of course there's been no announcement made that the 4th gen will ship before the end of the cram and jam deal (sept 25th), but reports of low stock on the 3rd gen make that seem unlikely.

I dont know what right Ill have to feel angry, but if I do end up with a 3rd gen I will definitely be dissappointed.
