The iPod was already thin, so making it thinner was probably a feat in itself. The new scrollwheel is great, and the thin-ness is great as well, but instead of making it thinner, why not keep it the same size and somehow fit in a larger battery? If someone wants a smaller player, they'll get a mini iPod.

Apple will not announce the new models through a press event, though Think Secret has learned that the announcement will be delivered through an out-of-the-ordinary publicity medium.

Hmmm could this be what they mean??

Wasn't it Newsweek Canada who posted the pics of the new iMac a little too early back in '02?
Duff-Man says...no, it was Time Canada - that's probably why Newsweek got the scoop this time - just to prove they could blow it too....oh yeah!

1G:2G as 3G:4G

I think were going to have to wait until 5G for some big improvements.

:/ im not too excicted....YET. im REALLY REALLY hopin that apple increased battery life to like 16+ hrs, because that is the only thing other players can use against apple. i was hoping for a color screen, apple probably is experimenting with oled or something more advanced, so it might take a while. that would be SWEET to have a touch sensitive screen across the whole face, kinda like a PDA. meh, a guy can dream.
well, whatever features the new one has, im getting a low end one. ive been waiting for about a week for 4gs to come out, and here they are. i might get 5gb more for free, they probably will drop the 15gb so ill get a 20 :D
EDIT: i dont really think the 4g's look to good. it just seems naked without the buttons. i didnt think the 3g's looked good when they came out, and now i like them so maybe my new 4g will grow on me :)
mmmm....clickwheel :D

Looks pretty sweet to me. I'll be keeping my 3G (I had my Rio 500 for four years! Plan to keep my iPod just as long!!), but I'm not sure what peoples complaints about "not enough new" are, especially when we don't even know what else is new BESIDES the new wheel (which is HUGE if ya ask me- regardless of whether it's already on the Minis).

The idea that the regular iPod will be slimmer is awesome, and probably will be larger HD sizes across the board (whic his always nice). At this point, until I see the beast in person, I'm not sure how I feel about the white w/ grey wheel. I wonder if the back is still metal though. Probably, eh? Pretty sweet though, might have to pick up this issue of (bleh) Newsweek.

If they drop the price and increase the battery, there goes 90% of people's arguments on why iPods suck.

It's a click wheel just like the mini. The photo has little depth to it. There is a slight suggestion of depth at the bottom of the wheel in the photo below. But it is only a 2D photo and doesn't faithfully represent the product. (When shown on the website it will be heavily photoshopped to emphasize various parts, as is always done). Apple spent money developing the wheel. They have a patent pending on it and they sure as hell will use it. Here's a higher rez version of the cover:

Yeah, I see that now. I was wondering how would they make the scroll wheel and buttons touch sensitive. Oh well, either way I am getting it.

Cost?

I wounder what it'll cost. I just ordered an iPod mini. It'll ship on 8.2 or so Apple says. Umm... cancel order and wait two more weeks?

one detail people are forgetting

everyone who is saying that there is no new features based on what you saw on the screen. Gang, dont forget you can adjust what you see on the screen. so in that picture in news week they have all of the goodies that all want hidden and it will be revealed monday.

Also, for those who want video out, hey it still can be on the top or bottom. if this was released in a keynote steve would say, "oh yeah, one more thing..." folks, lets just wait it out till monday.

Also, I'd be pretty surprised if they dropped the price. I just can't see it happening. Not with Apple. Not with the Minis taking up the $250 price point. Like someone pointed out earlier, what price are they going to go to? $279? Too little differentiation between the Mini. $50 is bad enough, especially if the 4G is a smaller size than the 3G...

Something interesting. I've been brute forcing the site, and every set of numbers I have tried have linked to an article, book, or picture, except...

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5456957/site/newsweek/

That link says it's "outdated." Both 5456956 and 5456958 work. Perhaps our article was taken down?

I'm not giving up hope. More brute forcing to do... hmm hmm...

Duff-Man says...I like the look of the new iPod - I was never a big fan of the 4 buttons, I preferred the wheel like the original iPod I have now. I could easily be convinced to upgrade this time once I see the specs and prices, especially if the battery is improved....oh yeah!

New Feature:

One new feature I'd like to see added is: crossfade playback. Like the effects feature in iTunes. Those gaps between songs are really annoying. Joining tracks is a bad work-around, some of my techno albums I need to keep two versions of... one for iTunes, the other for my iPod, this is plainly no good. I hope they can include that feature into a firmware update for 3Gs. I realise battery life would suffer, but I'd take that loss any day. I'm sure playing 70 minute files would be about the same drain as crossfade playback. So come on Apple!!... please do it! :)

firstly, that whole duff man thing is getting old.

secondly, in my opinion, an evolution of a product like iPod is hardly in the same league as a totally new form factor iMac.

Don't diss the duff-man.

hmm.... i would get one... but i like the 3G design better...

I guess I would like 4G more if the wheel was white with the button imprints grey, rather than vice-versa.

They were able to make the iPod thinner because the drive is now embedded right into the circuit board rather then simply being dropped into the shell and attached with a bulky ribbon connector. Even though it is thinner, there still should be enough room for the same size battery. That battery can have a couple of hours more charge to it if they use a different version. Several replacement batteries available do hold longer charges. The battery issue is for most people a non-issue. If it was and Dell and other players with supposedly longer battery life would be selling better. But, guess what, they're not.

the advantage of a shuffle option is you can listen to albums in order, and use the shuffle option when you want to listen to your entire library on random
