Good News... New Zealand (Auckland) just got the update about 3 hours ago.
http://www.geekzone.co.nz/manhinli/5384
USA should be getting ours soon. I guess the upgrade is starting in East Asia, and spreading over to the US within a few hours or less. Unfortunatly, if im right, UK will be one of the last countries to recieve the upgrade, who knows...:apple:

well australia hasn't got it yet and we're next door to NZ.

From what I've heard, you press and hold the home and the sleep button for 3 seconds. I wouldn't really know, I don't have the UPDATE, and I don't think Apple knows it.

No need for 3 seconds. Just press concurrently both buttons. The screen then flashes and a screenshot is saved to your photos or camera roll. You can open Photos app to view the screenshots.

OMFG! It's recognizing the fact that there IS a 2.0 update... STILL doing the same thing it did before...

same here.
i say for it to update on iTunes, then it says if i would like to learn more, so i click that button. After that, i see the "Accessing iTunes Store go up, and in a flash, it disappears. IS this the same problem that everyone has been having?

It's a beta on BitTorrent... AKA illegal. Download at your own risk.

Ummmm...Noooooo, the file is hosted on Apple's server and is available through a link that has been posted multiple times throughout this thread and many others. and it is not the beta, it is the final release that will hopefully be available via iTunes later tonight

Is this only on the 2.0 upgrade, I'm guessing? (since it's not working for me on 1.1.4)

pointer finger, thumb. pointer finger, thumb.

I've been watching this thread all day and just had to register so I could throw my two cents in!

Still, the fact that you are getting a $10 piece of software for free is -stealing- and thus illegal. Not only that, but you can't be sure it's the same one iTunes is getting.

I tried upgrading with an early update I got from somewhere, but I keep getting error 1602. Ah, looks like my $10 will go to waste when (if) I buy the update.

... Not only that, but you can't be sure it's the same one iTunes is getting.

Actually we have had confirmation that it is the same version, those people that got it through iTunes before the servers went crazy have confirmed with screenshots of the download and install process that the build is the same in both files

i Don't think its server problems causing this, iPhone 1st Gen users were able to update to 2.0 a few hours ago when the server were FIXED. Its only iPod touch users that have been left in the dark.

I just talked with an Apple technical representative

She said that you aren't geting through because of the huge number of connections going into the bank of servers for updating - which are also the servers for updating iPhone Gen 1 and activating iPhone 3G - and these multiple things along with the fact that this was a worldwide launch is taxing their servers to the point of crashing. When iTunes tells you 1.1.4 is the current version, that's a point when the update servers are DOWN. iTunes sees nothing new and is fooled into thinking there is nothing new.

She said the best thing I (or any of us) can do is to just keep trying. That's right folks, keep clicking those Update buttons!!! :D

Happy second round of Apple-induced insanity (following WWDC), everyone! :apple:

EDIT: Think of the get more info failing to get through to the iTunes Store page as trying to get really popular concert tickets on Ticketmaster... there are so many connections trying to get in the limited openings in the server and are jamming it so many people just simplay can't access it.

Okay, so what I don't understand is why Apple hasn't thrown more boxes into its cluster to help with the load. I mean come on, Xservers are in stock according to the Apple Store. They need to just go unbox a few, send over their iTunes Store server image and hook it into a spare rack.

Or failing that, they could at least have been ready with Amazon's EC2 as a fall back. It only takes 10 minutes or so to provision an EC2 instance, and they are super cheap. Would only cost Apple a couple of grand (maybe even 10x that but still!) to take enough load off the cluster that it can start responding in a timely fashion.

And for that matter, most of what they are doing (at least for iPod Touch users) is sending back static content. I can buy albums via the iTunes Music Store right now, so that means its payment severs are up and running fine. And near as I can tell, thats the only part of the iPod Touch upgrade process that is dynamic.

Sounds like Apple needs to get some better systems administrators if you ask me.

Just my angry-been-clicking-the-button-all-day-and-getting-nowhere two cents.

SOME were able to download it but then their iPhones were unusable because iTunes activation servers for both iPhone and iPod Touch were down. That is what was causing the problem with an error on youtube on those people that downloaded 2.0 from the link, but could not activate it.

Very Interesting Response

i sent an email complaining and this is what i get:)

Hi Michael,

I understand that you have been trying to purchase the 2.0 Software Update for your iPod Touch, but are getting a message that "iTunes is currently unavailable". I can certainly see why this would be frustrating. My name is Amber, and I would be happy to offer you some information on this.

I know how excited you must be about this new update, and there are many other customers who are also excited about this. Unfortunately for some, this leads to errors like the one you experienced, which are due to the high volume of people attempting to attain this update at this time.

It is possible that because today is the release date for the 2.0 Software Update, some people will experience this issue all day long. I know how disappointing this can seem, but I assure you this is only temporary.

I would advise waiting a few hours, or possibly until tomorrow, to attempt to repurchase this, as the volume in customers trying to purchase may decrease by that time. I apologize for the inconvenience this error is causing.

In lieu of this, I have issued 3 song credits to your account. You can use these to buy the individual songs of your choice from the iTunes Store.

As usual. us iPod Touch users get screwed.

I'm kind of pissed off about the January update being included with this also, seeing as I shelled out the $20 in January for it..

Oh well, I just want this update, dang it.

Okay, so what I don't understand is why Apple hasn't thrown more boxes into its cluster to help with the load.

It's entirely possible that's what they were doing in server downtimes (when iTunes showed 1.1.4 being current). In fact, if you haven't noticed, it's been constantly on 2.0 for a while now.. longer than any streak I can remember today.

The Link

Does not work anymore as of about 4 pm today. Apple found out and took it off their site. So you have to do it through torrents.

An easy way to keep the time though is to go to my link under my "home page" in my profile. Check it out!

Wow

I DID IT!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
JK this is absolutly rediculous and apple should at least have an anouncement and not leave us in the dark!

Sort of off-topic, but I tried installing a "free link" 2.0 firmware I got earlier, and got the error 1602 through iTunes when I tried upgrading. I'm sure it's the version being distributed.

Do you know if this will happen if I legitimately buy the upgrade and how can I fix it?

Anyway, I'm out of the 2.0 loop, now I just get a "iTunes store is unavailable error when I press "Learn more."
