what do once i finished dowloading it? i have firefox btw.

Put the file in C:\Documents and Settings\{your user name}\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates (or whatever location is applicable for your environment). I think if you then restart iTunes, it will just use that file when you hit the Update button instead of looking for a download. I could be wrong. I still haven't finished downloading.

Or, actually use the method in the post above mine. I couldn't remember if it was possible to do a shift+click on Update, for some reason I was thinking with that method you would have to do a Restore and completely wipe out your iPod.

Patience

To all you having problems updating: Given all the troubles 2.0 was causing when it first came out, don't you think its prudent to wait at least a couple of days before updating now? I'm sure Apple is going to spend quite some time fixing unexpected bugs/server issues and I'd think waiting a while can improve chances of getting a clean upgrade.

Patiently waiting,
Robert

Safari does something weird to the download, the only way i got the ipsw file was by using firefox. Safari gave me a folder.

it's not a ipsw file... :/

Did you actually click my link, or did you just try to save the link in my post? It goes to a Gizmodo page that contains the link to the .ipsw file. I didn't want to put the direct link in this forum in case that was against the rules.

Thanks for the Gizmodo Link. I've just downloaded the 2.1 update and currently I'm restoring the iPod Touch. I'll report about how well it works.

Remember to hold the shift key as you press the restore button to select manually the location of the firmware file.

Thanks, I didn't know you could drop the restore file there and use it as an update.

Just updating at the moment...

Yup, looks good 2.1 showing on the main screen and kept all my settings.

I went to gizmodo and downloaded it... it was on my desktop as ipod 2,1 and there was no ispw file.

Gizmodo link

Link works fine - good work fella.

Ipod now at 2.1 (5F137)

Wa-hey! Off to listen to Russell Brand now and do the ironing - safe in the knowledge that the Ipod touch does pretty much nothing new!

Exciting tho! :)

iPod Restored succesfully :)

I've avoided app syncing so now I'll install fresh updated copies from the App Store directly from the iPod.

It seems it works much faster, installed NetNewsWire and updated all my RSS feeds almost instantly. Now I'm going for the last.fm client.
