Just an update to all those who had US orders, I've been tracking the FedEx flight that I think the shipment of iPods is on. Early this morning I hit up FlightAware, and found the only plane that FedEx had in the air between China and Alaska. It took off from one of the two airports that is close to Kunshan (which is where it sounds like most people's orders shipped from), and is set to land in Anchorage in just under 3 hours from now. Of course, there's no way to know for certain that this is our plane, but it's still the only flight that FedEx has between China and Anchorage, and there are Anchorage to Memphis flights scheduled that line up with the arrival time of the flight I've been tracking (for those who don't know, Memphis is FedEx's big hub in the US). So, with any luck, our iPods are on FedEx flight 28 and should land in Alaska in a little less than a few hours :) Was this amount of research and tracking obsessive on my part? Sure. But is it ftun? Hell yes!

thanks for the tip

I just walked out of the Apple Store in Southpark mall in Charlotte, NC and they do not have the new iPod Touch in stock.

Funny, they were ready to sell me an iPod Touch 4th gen though. The quote was "we don't have the fifth generation, but the fourth generation is here and it's really nice". I know they have to push the older products (and some customers want the 4th gen at the lower price point), but that seemed so weird to hear. :)

They didn't know - or were not allowed to tell me - when the new iPT will be in store.

from the details that people are posting here and usually some deductive knowledge, my prediction is that the iPod Touch will be released next Monday, October 15

See, that makes perfect sense to me... except for the fact that it's a Monday. Monday seems like a really weird day to launch a product.

My 32 GB non-engraved White and Silver shipped early morning today with an estimated arrival date of October 15th.

Nope.

Because Apple is making a statement that they are releasing the IPT5 in the home territory of Nintendo and Sony first. iPT5 is going to seriously hurt PS VITA. :D

I doubt those two products will ever have any affect on each other seeing as they are not even in the same category. I have seen people saying this all over the internet, but the truth is that people who want a dedicated game system targeted at serious gamers will not choose the iPod Touch over the Vita and people who want a multimedia ios device will not choose the Vita over the iPod Touch. The iPod Touch is a multimedia ios device that also lets you play games. The Vita is a gaming device that also lets you listen to music/surf the web. Even the best iPod Touch game apps only hold most people's attention for five minutes or less. Gamers play on the Vita for even hours at a time. Two completely different devices targeted at two completely different audiences. I wish people would stop trying to compare them because they have nothing to do with each other. That would be like me saying that the Macbook Air is seriously going to hurt window blind sales. No comparison. :) There are a lot of people who even want both the Vita and the iPod Touch. Different devices; different uses. I apologize for the rant. Lol.

I completely agree. I would expect them to release on the Friday, 12th October.

I wasn't the only person to compare them, but do you know who did it first? Steve Jobs himself!

Anyway you're forgetting there are a huge number of casual gamers, if Vita had offer better Internet experience, they would buy the Vita instead. What percentage of the video game market comprise of these hardcore gamers? I would say they are less than half anyway

So you think Apple released iPT5 in Japan first by accident?

The release in Japan probably has NOTHING to do with Sony or Nintendo. It probably has more to do with Japan being in an advanced/early time zone. This is similar to how Australians often get their hands first on things like iPhone 5 etc.

Oh, pardon me. If Steve Jobs says something, it just has to be true. ;) Yes, there are far more casual gamers than serious gamers. However, these two devices are targeted at these two very different audiences. There are people who may want a more involved gaming device if they have an hour or two in the bus, on a plane, anywhere... Those people would never be entertained for a straight hour or two with the game apps or any apps on any ios or android device. The reason is that those are not dedicated gaming devices. Which brings me to another point. Full touchscreen devices are awesome, but people who are in a moving vehicle would become very frustrated trying to use them. Even when not in a moving vehicle, most games that involve you for more than ten minutes at a time require more than just touchscreen. Comparing the iPod Touch to the Samsung Galaxy Player makes far more sense because they are in the same category. Dedicated handheld gaming devices do not fall anywhere near this category and target a completely different audience who, although may be much fewer, do still exist. :)

The New Zealand time zone is the fastest in the world but we never get anything first. Got the iPhone 5 over 2 weeks after the U.S release.

The iPod Touch being released first in Japan has nothing to do with marketing and everything to do with location. Trust me, if the U.S. was as close to China as Japan was, we would have seen the iPods in stores at the same time. Not to mention different timezones etc. If Plane A (headed for the U.S.) and Plane B (headed for Japan) leave China at the same time, which plane would get to it's intended location first?

Ah, but what about location? Japan is closer to China.

i don't think "fastest" is the correct word here, instead try "earliest," sorry but my grammar instincts just kicked in there  ;)

Unless, maybe NZ is in a time distortion field?

Or a reality distortion field? ;)

An update on the FedEx plane: based on the FlightAware tracker, it looks like they're in a holding pattern over Anchorage Int'l airport. Should be landing soon, everybody keep an eye out on your order tracking pages! :)

EDIT: The FlightAware page just refreshed, the plane landed 5 minutes ago (I think there's a US law about flight trackers being delayed by a few minutes)

i was obsessively looking at that page for the last hour  :p ;)

Uh there is some thing call the plane now. It take 5 hours by air from Foxconn Shenzhen factory to Japan. 10 hours to Cali. Is not that big a difference.

Plus the Apple Japan retail stores should have the stocks a few days ahead of the launch. Meaning the first batch of iPT5's were headed straight to Japan and not the US.

If Apple could make simultaneous worldwide launch for iPhone 5. They could do it again for iPT5 if they want to.

I hope you were/are this dedicated when researching for school/work. :) I know that would come in very handy for me. Thank you for doing the research for us, though. This kind of feels like the dreaded group work during school days where one person did all the work and everyone else just relaxed and still got an A.

I can be this dedicated at just about any sort of research, yeah. I'm homeschooled, so today this iPod research has been cutting into my schoolwork :p Normally though, I'd like to think I'm a pretty good student. Anyway, I'm happy to help while you all sit back and watch. Tracking airplanes is fun! It's really not that much busywork either. Once I managed to deduce what flight it was on it was just a matter of tabbing over to the flight tracker page every few minutes :) Beyond Memphis I won't be much help, because that's the point where everything heads to regional/local centers (at which point I'll obsessively track the shipments headed to Iowa), but until then I'll be happy to relay information back here :)

I actually meant plane; not train. Apple does everything differently when it comes to iPhones. They are not as invested to the iPod Touches which is what brought on the unprofessional-ism of not giving a specific date to even those who pre-ordered. To be fair, neither of us can assume what Apple's mindset was for proceeding this way; but seeing as the products are coming from China, it makes a lot more sense that Japan got the iPod Touches because of location only. Apple is an American company and I highly doubt they made so many Americans who pre-ordered their iPods, kept waiting for shipping date, and suddenly saw that Japanese people were walking out of stores with the device without ever having to pre-order or anything angry on purpose.

good analysis there bud! ;)
