i dont have a wall charger

now my ipod that worked just fine without a stupid update is worthless until i find a wall charger... it wont let me reset it, or do anything until it is connected with a wall charger...

thanks for the warning
im about to do a 6 hour roadtrip tomorrow without music

I delete my old iPod updates as new ones come out but I'm sure somebody on here has an older iPod update so you could revert back to the software version you had before. Or better yet... make a trip down to the apple store :)

I noticed this too and was wondering if it was just unique to my iPod since it is from the days when Power Adapters were included. Guess not.

Does it resolve the photo display problem with the 5G model where images sometimes won't display?

I've also had an issue with it not correctly updating the play count on resynching, so my smart playlist of un-played tracks doesn't get correctly updated.

The old ipod updater was a Mac PEF executable in a directory called "MacOSClassic". The new one is a Mach-O Universal Binary, with the binary file being called "iPod Updater Extreme"!!!
Nice find!

Also found a silly thing possibly left over from the developers? In the Resources folder is a Read Me.rtf :p:
Mac OS 9 CarbonUSB.h, CarbonUSB.cpp, macos9/CarbonUSB_macos9.cpp

Mac OS X CarbonUSB.h, macosx/CarbonUSB_osx.cpp, macosx/CarbonUSB_FSCalls.cpp

The macosx/CarbonUSB_MacOSX.c file is outdated–do not use it.

CarbonUSB_DebugLog.cpp is required for both 9 and X if DEBUG_CARBONUSB is set to 1

Also found out some secret preferences in Preferences.nib (see attachment). But they are disabled when you launch the app. Windows formatting on the Mac?? Multiple iPod support! w00t!! :D

See the other attachment "Hey, we gonna quit now, OK?" :)

Where exactly does it say on this site that its members are required to post every single possible circumstance or outcome for the update? If you want to blame someone blame Apple. I hope the silence in your car is deafening.

I was hoping to see something about that stuttering problem I occasionally get when using iTunes. :(

This old note at Apple has been updated: Smart Playlists stop updating dynamically on iPod now reads
If you have an iPod with a Click Wheel, Smart Playlists may stop updating dynamically after you update your iPod with iPod Updater 2005-06-26 or later. For example, if you rate a song on your iPod, the rating appears, but that same song won't appear in a Smart Playlist based on the same rating on your iPod. But this can happen with a Smart Playlist based on any criteria.

Use the iPod Updater 2006-01-10 or later to resolve this.

Note: This issue does not affect iPod nano or Fifth Generation iPod.

Same here. Fortunately there are a few people in the office with iPods...

You can't update a Windows formatted iPod with a Mac, you have to use the OS it's formatted to.

So yes, you'll have to use your work machine.

I formatted a Windows format iPod (Video) to Mac format with a new High Res PowerBook running 10.4.3. The PB was even ready to sync-up the iPod with iTunes.

You cannot use an iPod whose disk is configured for Macintosh on a Windows-compatible computer. However...While a Windows formatted iPod may work on a Mac, Apple supports this configuration only with iPod shuffle.

I didn't get the impression that he was complaining at anyone on this site. The ******* comment was aimed at Apple.

Anyway, I've got the same problem. Hmm, tough call

This update broke the backlight on my nano via holding the menu button down. Now when i hold the menu button down it returns to the main menu rather than enabling the backlight. Anyone else have this issue?

iDM, go rant at someone else - having to plug your iPod into the wall when Apple are too tight to ship the majority of 'pods with chargers is a pretty fundamental flaw in the game, don't you think? I think you owe the man an apology.

Sounds like the update did some sort of a firmware rewrite... interesting

does anyone know if this stops ipods working with the xbox 360? M$ said that apple could release and update that could stop them talking to each other :(

Try plugging you iPod using firewire cable to your mac (or Pc)
It usualy cannot distinguish between adapter and computer.
Its stupid, init.

I think you misunderstood. I didn't say you couldn't re-format a Windows iPod on a Mac, that's really easy to do. You can't update a Windows iPod's firmware using a Mac and maintain the Windows formatting and your songs. You have to do a full restore which will format your iPod to Mac and erase all your songs.

A Windows iPod will work just fine on a Mac until Apple releases an update - then you need to find a PC.

Updating an iPod is the term used to describe installing new firmware when Apple releases it. Putting songs etc. onto an iPod is called "Syncing" whether it's automatically done or manually done.

What type of iPod do you have? I have one of the 2G minis - the first iPod (except for the shuffle) to not come with a wall adapter. When I updated the firmware it did not ask me to plug into a wall charger but to just leave the iPod plugged into the computer whilst it restarted.

I was under the impression that none of the iPods that ship without a power adapter require one for firmware updates? So what type do you have?

Yes, I noticed that too.

I have a 5th Gen 60GB.

Still works on my G4.

The minis now have horizontal scrolling menus like the nanos when displaying long names. Nice little feature!

:D

Mine doesn't. I only see that in the Podcasts section, are you getting scrolling in other menus too Lacero?

Delete old updates...

I had never noticed how many old iPod updates I had on my computer and how much drive space they were taking up. I was below 1GB free on my PowerBook and by tossing all but this one and the previous one (just in case) I suddenly have a little more breathing room.

I'm guessing some of the bug fixes for the 5G iPod includes the problem of browsing by artist and only seeing songs that have fields for album filled in, and not songs with the album field left blank. I haven't updated any of my iPods to be sure of it.

I can confirm that this issue has NOT been resolved.

Maybe we haven't b*tched enough?
