What program do u use to encode video? I know that QT pro and iTunes convert work ok, I use iSquint and other progs, I also know that vid's downloaded from the Music store work ok.

It varies, but mostly Handbrake using the version with the H.264 baseline support. I usually specify 512kbps for the video and 128kbps for the audio. 2-pass.

edit: for clarification - all my vids are H.264.

All mine are mp4 with aac audio iSquint high setting

I don't have isquint. Anyway, you say that QT Pro and iTunes converted files work (both of which are H.264). You also say that vids from ITMS work (these are also H.264).

So the longer vids that fail on your iPod are all mp4 created by iSquint.

Seems like there's a few thing you could try (if you're so inclined) to narrow this down.

wall charger issue

I just ran the update and now to complete the update process I have to plug my iPod into a wall outlet and I don't have the charger. Now I have to go buy one or I can't use my iPod anymore?!

i had the same problem..but i just left it plugged in with my USB to my computer (about a half hour) and eventually it just started to charge again and it recognized my iPod and the wall charger sign went away.

Just ran the update through my 30GB iPod 5G and all is well. One thing that is noticeably different is there's no stutter as I switch between menus and screens, smooth transitions is the way now.

What I was trying to say is that you may have the problem on your iPod and not know about it seeing as your not playing mp4 files.

Ha! Funny how this has suddenly become my problem...

Didn't say it way your problem, just said you may have the problem on your iPod but not know about it, as you don't play the type of files that cause the problem.

I'm havin problems with my video as well, as already mentioned. I've got the 60GB 5G and it plays 30 seconds, then pauses, then resumes with no sound.

In Windows, after you've downloaded the updater you have to install it and restart your machine. Then run the updater - which takes a couple of minutes to do its thing. About 1 minute for the final firmware update, and you're done. For a slowish machine it may take 10-15 minutes. I don't think a Mac needs a restart, so much quicker.

You shouldn't need to restart a Windows machine either, it's just there almost as a precautionary measure which is sometimes actually needed, (doublespeak I hear you say). In my experience, installing takes a minute at most, running updater takes less than a minute. Never run it on anything with a processor that is that slow though, so I'm not the best person to judge performance of this thing.

Did this update kill anyone elses iPod.

I ran the update and my 3G 30GB iPod never came back to life properly. I now locks up on the Apple logo as soon as I switch it on.

Does anyone have the same issue or advice on how to fix it? I've done a reset [Menu]+[Play] but it doesn't help at all. I've also drained the battery for 2 days, and still nothing :(

BTW, I wrote about it here too.

Thanks, . . . Michael

The reset combination is Menu and Select I believe, or Select and Play.

You could try restoring your iPod from the cd that came with it.

Get this, my girlfriend and I both bought 5g video ipods that are just over a month old. I recently did the update on mine and it's fine.

Did it on hers and it froze on the apple start up screen, I left it for about 45 minutes and then did a reset. Now it won't switch on at all. Nice.

So now I have a nice shiny £280 paperweight. Add to this after I did the latest software update on my 3 month old powerbook my dvd drive packed up I'm not a happy chicken.

Ok, they're all under warranty, but I don't want a refurbished ipod and being without my powerbook and net/email access at home is going to make life very difficult for me.

Having switched from a PC only a few months ago, now microsoft don't seem as bad as they used to.

Thanks a bunch Apple, Why did I switch from a PC again ?

Updater has killed my 5G 30 GB iPod and its replacement!

This new software updater is a serial killer! I have an iBook G4 and let it update my 5G 30 GB iPod (it asked, so I clicked 'update'). The result was a white screen and audible beeping noises on the iPod every time I tried to reset. The local Apple Service Provider replaced it after one week of servicing when they too realised that doing a hard reset multiple times was not going to do the trick.

Anyhow, I assumed that it must have been some inexplicable circumstance that produced the fault and I let my iBook update the replacement iPod, to this time have the poor thing make a short beep, show the apple logo in shadow and now not show anything on screen at all.

So, if your 5G 30 GB iPod is under warranty and you want it replaced because you scratched the screen, try updating it a few times. :)

Hi
That whole Menu --> Backlight Toggle On / Off removal is very frustrating to me. Outside of that, things have gone smoothly. I've had two white iPod 5G 60GBs and both seem just fine, outside of that stupid 'feature'. My first iPod had a spot to the top right of the clickwheel that had the backlight showing through the casing. Something obviously didn't line up / seal properly. It wasn't too bad until you tried to watch a movie [ darker colors ] at night, it stuck out like a sore thumb. If you wish for the Menu button to toggle the backlight again, please...

Apple - iPod - Feedback

NOTE: Please be kind / professional but firm with your feedback. We want Apple to listen to us remember. Being an a*****e is not going to do that.

I've never heard of the wall charger 'thing' before. I've been through four iPods (15GB 3G, 20GB 4G, 4GB 2G mini, 60GB 5G) now and haven't seen that one yet.

i tried old updates..
i cant even mount an ipod to use an old updater... it wont let me do anything until i plug it into a wall charger

a trip down to the apple store means crossing the border and driving 3 hours down to seattle

the registered retailers in vancouver are less than helpful in my experience

It's probably too late, but there is something called the iPod shuffle power pack.

It's around 30 dollars, includes an AC adapter and car charger, and is available at places like target and wal-mart.

Even though the name says shuffle it works for all iPods. You just need to supply your own usb to dock cable.

This Knowledge Base article suggests adding the Backlight item to the main menu which isn't that useful :)

That solution isn't going to do it for me. I simply installed the 10-12-2005 iPod Updater from the CD included with my 'Pod and used that to restore it. Worked just fine and I still have my backlight toggle. :) I'm keeping the 01-10-2006 iPod Updater though. I just hope they make an iPod video / nano 1.2 update. This is one of the very few times I've been reluctant to update.

Maybe I've just been lucky??? Though, that wouldn't seem possible with my experiences. :D :(
