_show_voltage

Anyone else using the _show_voltage "hack" to get a numeric display of battery life?

I've got a 2G Mini & I only used it for about a week before the tiny battery icon started getting to me so I switched to the numeric display (which was still somewhat erratic - sometimes I would actually see it increase a small amount rather than decrease - but at least I knew fairly reliably that when it was down around 200 it was time to charge). Updated yesterday & now it's gone. :( Did a bit of Googling & I believe this has happened to other types of iPods after previous updates...

OTOH, apart from missing _show_voltage, it certainly hasn't done anything bad from what I can tell after several hours of use. In fact I almost swear it actually sounds a little better - although maybe that's just the "everything feels snappier now after an OSX update" placebo effect

Holding Menu Brings You Back To Front Screen

Like many others on this thread, once I installed the 1.1 update on my 5G iPod Video, holding the MENU key brings you back to the home screen. Has anyone found a setting that allows you to choose between backlight/menu screen? :)

sounds more useful then. Its a bit pointless having no backlight on a colour screen cause you can't see it!

Beware the update!

I have a 5G white ipod on which I have just run this update - went smoothly until my ipod showed the apple symbol after updating then all I got was a white screen!
I have repeatedly reset and hard reset, restarted my iac G5 computer and reloaded updater but nothing. My computer won't recognise the ipod so I have no idea what to do next - anyone got any ideas? I can't turn the ipod off now - it just shows a white screen all the time.
I've only had this ipod since Christmas and this is the first updater I've run on it. I've alreadt had my husbband's nano quit after less that 24 hours - I can't take much more!
HELP!!!!

my ipod worked fine...
then i ran the update, and it says to finish the update i have to plug it into the wall charger....
i dont have a wall charger

now my ipod that worked just fine without a stupid update is worthless until i find a wall charger... it wont let me reset it, or do anything until it is connected with a wall charger...

thanks for the warning
im about to do a 6 hour roadtrip tomorrow without music
Yeah, I was in a similar situation the last time I updated the firmware on my iPod mini. I wasn't about to fetch my wall charger from work so I came up with a small trick. If you cover up the middle two lines inside the USB plug on the cable, the iPod will think that your computer is a wall charger. (The two outside lines are power, and the two inside lines are data.) I just cut a small piece of electrician's tape and used a pair of tweezers to put it in place. If you try this, be careful not to damage the plug, and use tape that won't fall off or leave adhesive behind.

This has completely ****ed my 60GB iPod 5G. All songs skip, frequent audio distortion and will not play past around 10 seconds in to a track. Have had 4 lock-ups on the way home listening to it too.

Seems there's a major problem with 1.1 on the 5G 60GB models - check out Apple Discussions and iLounge.

If a downgrade doesn't fix it it's going back to Apple.

FWIW I have a 60GB iPod 5G and I've had no such problems since the update.

All updated fine on my 30G Photo, but I had problems updating it "via iTunes and the auto-update prompt that it gave me when I downloaded it and after I plugged the device on my Mac. Gave me an error message like "Cannot disconnect iPod" or something like that.

I closed iTunes and opened the iPod updater separately and all updated and is fine.

Noticed that my interface is snappier and I get less of the Apple reboot. Songs load quicker, menus move quicker, but NO new features like Screen Lock :(

O well.. take what I can get. At least Apple released an update for more than the Video or Shuffle this time around.

What gives?

I just ran the update and now to complete the update process I have to plug my iPod into a wall outlet and I don't have the charger. Now I have to go buy one or I can't use my iPod anymore?!

I didn't get the impression that he was complaining at anyone on this site. The ******* comment was aimed at Apple.

Anyway, I've got the same problem. Hmm, tough call
I posted a few hours ago about the same thing happening to me too. I solved the problem by making a trip to Target and plugging my iPod in at the store in the iPod isle where the demos are set up. There was actually a couple of chargers already plugged in and a dock too. All is fine now, I'm happy.

You're lucky, but I'm surprised you've not noticed *any* problems? The compaints from 5G 60GB owners seem to be widespread - but I'm curious as to why very few people on Macrumors are commenting?

I've tried wiping my 5G 60GB a couple of times and re-applying the update but the bugs don't go away. Have had to downgrade to 1.0 and spend 2 hours uploading all my music again.

Many thanks

I just got my first ipod (a second hand G4 20GB) and connected it for the first time and was meet with a update notice (cool - and a only a few days old) so downloaded and updated and got the charger icon and all functionality gone :(
I've got a charger (is was in the box) but thought that my 'new' ipod was already completely decharged due to poor battery life.
Checked out google with 'ipod update charger' and selected this forum and read the thread.
So thanks for the info on this icon being the normal responce to an update, chears all

Maybe you should get Oliver Stone to make a movie about this...

But seriously, my iPod is working fine since the update. I don't have songs stop only 10 seconds in and I don't get distorted audio.

If not many people here are commenting on this it probably means not many are having such problems. Looking at other current threads on this site, or older threads, should show you that people will (and do) complain in droves here if they don't like something or if something doesn't work right.

It seems to me that people HAVE been complaining in droves about this update.

Many people do not like to complain. If they see that someone else has already posted the problem they experienced, they search this forum for some helpful person to post a solution.

Unfortunately this site seems to have a lot of fanboys that ridicule people who point out problems with Apple, rather than try to actually address the point.

I have a 4th generation iPod and fortunately for me this update seems to work fine. But to someone that just spent $400 + for a video iPod and this update totally screws up their machine, this is a nightmare. You aren't doing anyone any favors by minimizing someone else's problems.

My 5g iPod has been updated and it's also working fine. Seems a little strange to me that the update is messing up some machines and not others. I used the windows update as my library is on my main machine which is a PC. I don't suppose it's anything to do with whether the update was done on mac as opposed to PC is it?

I miss the backlight function on the menu button though.

iTunes/iPod updater

I have a 20Mb photo iPod, after running the iTunes update, when I connected my iPod and ran the iPod updater it only gave the options to reset my iPod not update it. The updater said it could only update Mac formatted iPods. As mine is Windows formatted no update was run and iTunes no longer recognises my iPod. Has anyone any ideas?

I'm not sure why iTunes wouldn't recognise your iPod anymore. I did the same, after which I downloaded the Windows iPod update and ran that and all is well.

I suggest you run the Windows update. If things don't work - copy all your iPod-harddisk data to your machine, restore the whole iPod in Windows (I assume you need to use it with both Windows and Mac!). Then copy your harddisk data back and resync your iPod to your Mac to reload the songs etc.

I did no such thing.

Now, if someone replies with incredulity to my post (where I said my iPod is working fine) and then follows up with innuendo that implies everywhere else but MR has these iPod problems... well, what do you expect?

All my reply said was that I don't believe MR threads are hiding an iPod issue - because they never do. You only need to look at some of the lunacy going on in the Macbook Pro and Intel iMac threads to see that MR is far from impervious to Apple attacks (and from your so-called "fanboys").

And, my iPod still works fine. I don't agree that I'm fortunate or lucky. But you can disagree.

Ha ha :) I'll give his agent a call.

There is a problem with this update and the 5G 60GB model. It's something to do with access of the SDRAM cache and explains why the issue doesn't appear to affect the 30GB model, as that has a different cache design. There are widespread problems reported with playing video, but not as many people seem to be having/reporting the audio issues that I am.

There'll be another update along soon I expect/hope.

Interesting. Well, I definitely don't have any audio issues. I've not noticed anything with video either, but I've not used the video feature as much since the update. Is there something specific I can test to see for you?

Battery Life

My concern is the battery life, I have the backlight off when it is portable, and on always in my car. The MENU was just easier, going through the menu to get to it is good enough as well, I was just wondering if anyone found another shortcut to make the MENU backlight toggle again :)

The update made my 5G a lot faster scrolling through menus and it does not crash if you switch songs fast anymore.

Well, FWIW the kids have been playing music videos all afternoon on my 5G iPod 60GB (connected to tv via universal dock) and it's been flawless.

What program do u use to encode video? I know that QT pro and iTunes convert work ok, I use iSquint and other progs, I also know that vid's downloaded from the Music store work ok.
