if wishes were fishes

I wish the $350 iPod photo were 40 gig. 30 will barely hold all my music. I'd need the 60 if I want all my music and still be able to carry photos. The old low-end photo was 40. Okay, I know, I know... if this is true, you couldn't even get a photo model for less than $500 before, and I would be able to get a 60 for $50 less than the old low-end.

Think Secret is usually pretty reliable about WHAT is coming, but they've been wrong on price. When the iPod came out January 2004, Think Secret had the price pegged at $199 as late as the day before Macworld.

That said, a $199 iPod mini doesn't surprise me all that much, since iPod shuffle already has two price points that come in below $199. If the rumors are true, Apple is going to have iPod products at a big number of price points. It gives people opportunities at different budgets, but it also complicates the offering if the features vary too much as you move up in price.

Current offering:

iPod photo 60 GB ($599)
iPod photo 40 GB ($499)
iPod 40 GB ($399)
iPod 20 GB ($299)
iPod mini 4 GB ($249)
iPod shuffle 1 GB ($149)
iPod shuffle .5 GB ($99)

iPod choices are essentially 60 GB ($599), 40 GB ($499/$399) and 20 GB ($299). Color 60 GB ($449) and 40 GB ($349) would both be $150 discounts to the current price -- which is a HUGE discount -- and would take iPod off the $x99 price formula that it's been on since the beginning.

Also, where does 30 GB fit? My guess is that 30 is the new 20, as in 30/40/60, but, if the price rumors are true, that would make the entry level iPod a 30 GB at $349, which makes no sense. But iPod offerings at 20/30/40/60 doesn't make much sense either if iPod and iPod photo are consolidating into one line.

Very curious.

Tried best Buy in Alexandria? Their website shows it in stock there...

I'm not sure whether it'll come tomorrow or the summer, but I'm think that we'll fairly soon see a shift (thinking about this, the summer):

1GB iPod Shuffle $99
2GB iPod Shuffle $149
5GB iPod Mini $199
10GB iPod Mini $249
30GB iPod $299
60GB iPod $399

Whether they'll go far beyond 60GB without introducing an iPod Video, I don't know. It doesn't seem likely. That list also makes it seem unlikely that we'll see a 4GB and 6GB Mini, but I could be completely off.

Mind you, if a 10GB Mini appeared...I'd be selling the 5/6GB one I'm planning on purchasing tomorrow double-quick.

I'd peg that for October or if not the beginning of next year, but an 80 GB high end I would definately bet on appearing by October. And of course color screens across the line . . .

4 gig+screen = $200
1 gig no screen = $150

doesn't seem right to me...they better do something about their shuffle prices and/or capacity

It does seem an unrealistic drop but then there is allot more competition in and comming into the market as opposed to 12 months ago, so if Apple's bulk volumes of sales have reduce the costs of each unit, maybe they can afford to be this aggressive to get people using ipods as well as bounce sales from the halo effect...

Good for me, I am in the market for an iPod ;)

Since they cannot make shuffles fast enough, I think they got the price pegged right on. When demand slows watch for a price drop.

But moving the mini to within $50 of a shuffle will get more people to upgrade when they are in the store to buy a shuffle that is not in stock.

Marketing genius plain and simple, upsell upsell upsell!

but that's kind of how you could have a 4 gb mini for 250 before, or a 10 (or 15 or 20? i forget what size at the time) gb for 300.... they're not exactly comparable in that some people who want the convenience (weight, size, etc) of the shuffle will not want the extra size of the mini, even if it brings a screen and extra space...

woop de freakin' do... i wanna find a store in the dc/metro area that has a shuffle in stock!!

ARGH :D

best buy near tenley had a few in stock

oops did not see the last post. i saw one there on thursday in the case but i guess they are out now. they had the 1 gig.

I don't see how they could replace the current colors with 6 new ones. Unless they just move away from the pastels, there has to be a blue, green, and even pink in my opinion. And orange or yellow would just be a mistake...like the gold.

woww wat wud the mini's price be with education discount?? Thats wierd because the 4 gb ipod mini with screen will only be like 30 dollars more than the shuffle 1gb..but im all for it..

Do products usually come out at 12:00 est, or will it be a 9am est unvailing...

I do not remember exactly, but I am pretty sure that Apple bases the releases off of PST time, therefore most info should be updated around 12:00pm EST. I think this was how it worked when I was refreshing minutely looking for PowerBook updates.

Aside - I took advantage of said updates and the 12" RevD is working wonderfully, could not be happier :D

Why the hold on current Mini orders?

My little brother is graduating from high school this summer and I'm going to play the part of the cool big 'sis and buy him an iPod. Unfortunatly I'm a poor law student so I was looking at the shuffles. But I'd love to get him a mini if I could get it at the $200 or below price point.

Until I saw the rumor of keeping the current mini at $199 I was hoping to buy him a current mini on clearance as Apple usually drops the price considerably on older models when new ones come out. That's how I bought my previous iPod and saved $100. But my question is this, if they're going to keep the current mini line up but drop the price and add a bigger mini, then why would they suddenly put holds on all the iPod mini orders? Last week they were shipping same business day, now it's a week long wait. Why not continue to sell and ship same day if they're still goign to contiue this product but with a price drop. Is that common?

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Macs for $499?

Flash iPods for $99?

Minis with color screens?

Give me a break. I'll watch the Sci Fi channel if I want that kind of fantasy world.

Possibly because it saves a lot of hassle with people getting $50 returned from Apple's price-protection policy. Better to wait and charge them the right price to begin with.
