The UK and the US store are now down again. I could get into the US store initially but when I clicked on the iPod link to take me to the iPod store, the store is being updated post-it came up
OK. I think it's pretty much confirmed that every online Apple store is down now.

Confirm store down in US! Side note: Is it unusual to see apple updates on a wed? I thought they were a tuesday affair. Also, wouldnt a color Mini be fodder for a larger release than "updating the website"

No, if it's something like a color screen or wireless then it's not that big of an update to the line and it wouldn't be worthy of a big announcement like a new generation of the iPod.

A Wednesday update would be uncharacteristic of Apple, but hey, whatever works! Glad to see Jobs hasn't forgot about the mini, what with all the focus on the iPod. iPod photo and now the iPod shuffle. Guess we'll see in a few hours...
If this was going to be something "big"new ipods with color screens and bluetooth and not just new ipod miniswouldn't Apple host a special event and make a big to-do out of it? Like with the U2pod?

It's not really new iPods but instead the iPod photo becoming THE iPod and the photo line sort of dying off. And the wireless isn't big enough of a new feature to require a big release. Like I said before, if a completely new iPod were to be released, it would be worthy of a bigger release.
