Absolutely Brilliant
This is SUCH a brilliant idea, is really easy to do (you need a video camera, a 5g ipod, some white polystyrene sheet and some photoshop skills). I had a look at Macrumors and was mortified that this rumoured device was not real, the trouble was, with the video, a bunch of things just didn't add up, I watched it a few times slowly (sad I know but there was this nagging thing going on.) The video is CLEARLY fake but is such a good one, and such a good idea that I am doubly impressed.
Here's my nagging stuff:
1. To do this, all you need to do is take the original 'fake' picture and photoshop it into a series of 'in progress' steps interspersed with video of a 5g ipod in a similar setting with similar chinese writing etc..
2. I say similar because the chinese writing sticker is not the same, the upper of the two characters has two lines that converge in its lower left corner. These lines are closer in the fake photo than in the video they should be even closer in the video thanks to the viewing angle but they are further apart.. The brown sticker is also almost parallel to the bottom of the connector in the 'fake' photo but at a much more pronounced angle in the video (you can see this while it is being stuck on and while being connected to the ipod (see my attachment)). You never get a good view of the writing in any moving video, only during the ken burns effect later on (obviously the fake photo with stuff photoshopped off and a 5g photoshopped on (easy).).
3. The white polystyrene sheet is not the same (different translucency - you can see a cable under the top left corner of the sheet in the video, not in the picture), it is also less crinkly, seems to have a different texture and is bigger in the video (but all the bits not in the picture are nondescript (photoshopped))
4. The two piece de resistances (spelled wrong I know but too excited to care...) are the following......
The two frames between when the label is invisible and visible (switch between them, you don't need me to point out that there is a clear error in the area that THE LABEL'S JUST BEEN TAKEN FROM...) The process went like this, they had the 'fake' picture, they marqueed, selected and copied the label and then cleaned up the underlying area, but one of the frames that ended up in the video has still got a bit of fuzz around where the label had been deleted FROM the fake picture... There is no other reason why that area specifically would be modified unless the label had come from there...
And the final one, and this really caps it off, I didn't notice it either until double checking a few times, the black squiggle is not the same... They do a black squiggle which looks pretty close and then cut to moving the REAL squiggle that they just copied and cleaned out from its original spot. Again, switch between the frames and you'll see, it is just not the same squiggle.... The reason they had to do this was that they couldn't reproduce the squiggle perfectly with a mouse. Just do one as similar as possible and cut to the finished (real) on being moved as quick as possible. What is the point of the squiggle and why fake it? because it is there in the 'fake' photo, so we have to do it. That is there to cover something, not just done arbitrarily... Again, see my attachments..
This is a brilliant double whammy fake of a fake, I reckon it IS real (the video ipod) and Apple are playing us for goons. Well done Apple but you're busted. Very well done though..
Oh, and, by the way, when do we get to see the perp adding the colour specific moire patterns to the colour bars? as well as the white glow around the white bars? That is a real - and powered on lcd screen being photographed. A couple of other minor notes that didn't add up, why can we see the chinese writing so clearly but not the ipod controls? Why is the camera strap thrown around so theatrically ? because it lends credence to the photo which has something similar. Why (and when) is the 8 changed to a B? because there was so much talk about it being an 8 or a B - people expect the obvious, expect stuff that they've been talking about.. Brilliant..
These may both be fakes but I am convinced that the video and the photograph are not made by the same person (or at the same time). I Was crestfallen when I read that it was busted as a fake and am really happy to report whether or not the photo is a fake (and it is technically a MUCH better fake than the video), the video DEFINITELY is...
God Bless Apple.
