Personally, I can't take it anymore. I can't wait until Tuesday. But still no matter if everything is fake or real both the picture and the video are well done.

Further Shadiness

He does a Google Image Search for "lcd color test." Actually running the search, you find no image like the one that was actually used in the original photo. And he ran the search in the video only yesterday, so the search results have probably not changed substantially since then. (You can tell when he did the search by the fact that Google's home page is shown with the "hockey" olympic doodle, up yesterday (Saturday) http://www.google.com/doodle11.html).

This just casts further doubt on the authenticity of this new video. I suspect it may have been made by someone having nothing to do with the original photo.

But there are two unanswered questions:

1) is that a '8' or a 'B' in the serial number
2) what do the Chinese characters mean?

With this video I'm putting it at 50:50 that it's a fake.

FWIW, LoopRumors reports that Apple has been changing some of the iTunes video downloads to a widescreen format. Could mean nothing... could mean something :)

1/ The scribble that is being moved is identical to that of the original image.
2/ The image in the video is higher resolution than the original image. So much so we make out that it is an 8 on the label.
3/ The label is in an identical position to the original image.
4/ The crinkle marks are identical to those in the final image.

1/ That's because the scribble being moved is taken FROM the original image. It's not the same scribble actually being shown drawn. (Which is odd anyway--what does it prove, just that the guy can scribble? And are we to believe he really scribbled in the middle and then placed it in the corner? Most people would just scribble where they wanted the scribble.)

2/ It's not even the same label. He wanted a label that clearly showed an 8 (but, we see, no handwritten 7) because of the discussion about it.

3/ No, it isn't in the same position: his barcode extends just past the cyan bar into the black. The original one ends within the cyan bar. (When he DOES show it in the same position, that's when he's just using the original.)

4/ The crinkles are taken FROM the original image. That's why they're softer in the initial zoom--they're enlarged. And that's why it's a digital zoom instead of a real camera effect. And that's why in the next scene (attaching the connector) which IS a real camera scene does NOT have the same wrinkles! The wrinkles are there... then they're not... and then they're back. Hmmmm ;)

Thanks for the side-by-side analysis. The two do have remarkable similarities that would be implausible to create from scratch (the wrinkles on the tyvek).

...Because, it seems that the desire to believe in a MR forum is stronger than the desire to be rational.
I see very few people here being CERTAIN it's real. I see a lot of people admitting we can't tell. That is being rational :)

And wrinkles are the same--but only in CERTAIN scenes--because they were copied FROM the original.

The basic strategy of this fake video is:

1. Show parts of the original where you can.

2. Fake as close as you can (which is not very) the rest of the time.

3. Use "clever edits" to hide the jumps back and forth between 1. and 2. (which failed to fool us)

All that sneaky editing means they DID intend to make us think it was the original being made. It's NOT meant to just "show how it could be done." You don't need to write on tape to show how that could be done :D

It failed to fool us, but it does show (in part--but glossing over some steps) how it could have been done. That wasn't its intent, but it does at least do that.

And even though it didn't fool us, the video was still a good attempt :)

Hmm all good points unfortunately :( I really hoped this would be the end of it, but my opinion is being swayed to believing this conspiracy theory.

I think that's huge. Here's an example: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewVideo?id=119951257&p=102808898&s=143441 . It looks to me like it's higher resolution video than the other iTMS videos, but there's no way to tell for sure without buying it.

If someone actually likes that show, buy the clip, open it up in QT Player, and get the native resolution. If it's higher resolution, we have the best evidence yet for larger screen "true" video iPods on Tuesday.

nagromme--

Good points.

I used to be 50:50 that this was a fake but now I'm thinking 50:50 that it's real.

Photoshop NATIVE OR UNDER ROSETTA??

Maybe the fake video and photo were done in Photoshop under ROSETTA? or has Apple made a Photoshop killer!, hence the Apple invitation (FUN NEW PRODUCTS FROM APPLE!!) :p

Well I don't go as far as buying the Apple conspiracy theory, but it IS a great thought :D I tend to think it's just someone ELSE with time on their hands (just like, um, us).

Couldn't have said it better myself :)

The only reason I still lean towards "real" a little is the iTunes format change to widescreen (see LoopRumors).

The funny thing (and I wouldn't be too surprised) would be if the real widescreen iPod DOES come out on Tuesday and DOES look like this... only JUST enough different to prove that the Flickr image was a lucky fake all along :D After all, it shares the dimensions and margins of the 5G, which makes it good (and even obvious) guesswork even if it's fake.

 LOOK!!!!!11!!!one!!!!111!!!!1!!1!one!!one!!!11!!

Steve did a special presentation for select employees late on Friday, and someone had a cell phone...

[edit] I just noticed, whenever you save a JPEG with Preview, it adds a "Photoshop 3.08" tag into the file. So anything that says that wasn't necessarily edited in Photoshop.

A fun little video showing what I among others already knew. I thought it was bigger though, it was hard to scale it from the picture. I was thinking it was laptop screen size. I guess if I owned an iPod I would have seen that, oh well. It's interesting that there seems to be almost as much discussion after it is revealed that it is a fake, than when it was originally posted.

It doesn't show anything except a few things about what MIGHT have happened. The video is a good attempt, but has been discredited. Read above.

Anyone who claims to truly KNOW whether the original Flickr image is real had better have the initials SJ :) You can believe it's real or believe it's not, but hard evidence we do not have.

FWIW..I bought an Enya Video from the iTunes store the first day they started selling music videos and it was wide-screen.

Apple has been selling wide-screen since the beginning of selling videos.

In that case, I won't believe there has been any change, unless someone can show me a specific example of something that used to be 4:3 now being 16:9. Anyone want to explore some iTunes content for us? :)
