It could be a different material. You can't say it's the same material based off a crappy camera phone quality pic

I am VERY late into this thread and I have to agree with many others when I say this looks very real. I thought the 5G iPod was a fake, but it turned out to be real a couple hours later. Also as stated it does appear to be the same place the last photo was taken. If it is real, then that's awesome. Apple is extremely fast with their iPods lately... maybe a little too fast. Either way, though, it's still awesome. I would love to own a true iPod video... in a few months due to funds. :p

Well they would obviously use a different material if they did, not necessarily one that looks different.

I have no idea if anybody's touched on this, but on other forums there have been issues regarding whether or not that cyan is supposed to be cyan or blue. Could it be that this model was about to be put in the trash due to failure to meet color standards (specifically blue?) when somebody snapped the picture? Also, why would they use standard iPod power cables if they're in a factory? This was probably cheaper. Last but not least, I don't know if anybody actually looks at their iPod cable from time to time, but there's a little line on the iPod side that indicates that that side should be on top. Now, I've never put it in the other way, simply because I just never have, but could it be that since this is a cheap cable, they had to know which side was up so as not to mess anything up?

Alright, I lied. This one is last for sure, I saw somewhere (TUAW I think) that the "fun, new product" could be referencing this, if this is an iPod/PDA-type device. Tagline I read: "Who says work can't be fun?" Even though SJ has said (I think) that he'll never do an Apple PDA doesn't mean he won't. After all, he said the same thing about an iPod that plays videos, and what to many of us have in our pockets/backpacks? 5G iPods. The iPod has been able to sync with Address Book and iCal (reference to the invite?) via iSync for quite some time; the only thing needing to be changed would be to make the iPod be able to upload stuff to the Mac, like a Palm or other PDA (probably using a similar iSync tool or whatever) and for the iPod to be able have info put into it.

I think it looks good, whether it's real or not.

That says nothing. If you have 2 identical twins and say both have the same personality because they look the same you could be wrong. Same goes for how a screen looks.

There seems to be quite a bit of discussion about the Chinese characters on the label. Being a native Chinese speaker, perhaps I could try to throw some light on it.

The characters, written in 'simplified' Chinese (the written form used in the People's Republic of China and not a 'computer font' as some has suggested), literally mean 'this side' - the first character 'this' and the second character 'side'. The phrase made up by those two characters could mean 'this side' as in 'the house is on this side of the fence' OR it could mean 'here', as in please come over here'. It could also mean a number of other things which is not really relevant to the current discussion. However, it does not automatically mean 'this side up' because 'this side' does not give an indication of up or down, left or right, etc.

The characters are not particulary well written but I don't write that well myself either! However, the writer could be trying to write in print and sometimes that could make the writing look awkward.

For what it's worth, I would have thought it simpler for the writer to use the character '上' ('up') if he wants to indicate which side is up.

My $0.02.

If nobody has said it yet, I'm going to make the prediction of what the teaser invitation is - the Feb 28, 2006 iCal picture.

It's for this device, which is not just a touch-screen iPod, but a PDA of some sort...which you can look at your calendar items on, among many other fun things, of course.

I can't think of any other way they would make the whole date/calendar theme of the invitation work...

Do you call your current iPod an PDA just because you can view your calendar, notes, and address book on it? NO So why do people keep calling the potential new product a PDA?

Sure, it will have more functionality because it will have a better way to input info through a touch screen but I seriously doubt Apple will EVER call it a PDA because it won't be one. It will be an iPod with more functions.

Most people will not buy a PDA. A lot will buy a sweet new iPod with more functions.

Understandable...the iPod Pro then? or the MacPod Pro :p (SJ said he wanted "Mac" in the names of his products...)

EDIT Now that I think about it, the iPod Pro would be really good. It lets them keep their current 5G iPod product line, and perhaps people will be able to upload/sync Keynote presentations for on-the-go presentations? The cable could have a VGA connector, like the 5G RCA one...except it would go through the dock connector?

Have you ever used a shiny touchscreen that wasn't a CRT? No.

An LCD touchscreen has a matte finish and is highly scratch resistant. All that photo shows is the material around the edge of the screen, the material that makes up the screen itself is not shown.

I don't have any leanings one way or the other but I hope it's not a PDA or a tablet thingy. Totally useless products they are for all but the most specialised consumers. Even if it is a fancy schmancy Apple PDA, I have no use for it at all and as such won't want it. If it's a fancy schmancy new iPod that also plays widescreen videos I'll sell my firstborn for one. I need a new iPod for music and a nano just won't hold enough.

I'm just going to wait till bloody 5am Wednesday morning when the event is in full swing and see what Apple comes up with. Then it's onto the fun part of producing a first born...:D ;) Anyone want to volunteer??

The reason people refer to it as a PDA is that it is assumed it will have the ability to input address and calendar information, among other things. In most people's minds, this is what makes a basic PDA. You do have a very good point, though, about how Apple will likely market it. I bet even if it does have PDA features, Apple will sell it as an iPod with extras.

Great job proving my point about why Apple will NEVER call it a PDA.

People have a mental block when it comes to PDA. They think of businessmen or guys in their 40's who wanna seem hip using these little gadgets that are just about phone numbers and appointments.

You make a device that has all the functionality of a PDA (and more), but is in the body of a sweet new iPod and called an iPod and it will fly off the shelves.

Thanks for setting us straight! Of course in another page or two, someone will ask what the Chinese characters say. It seems to be a recurring theme. :D

I don't remember ever seeing one of those stickers. Can someone estimate the size of this device based on the sticker size?... Wow, that's huge! My pythagorean says over nine inches...

mrgreen4242 said:
Hm, we'd have to know the original sticker size to be sure, but guessing that it is a standard size printable label, it looks like it could be a standard 1x2.63" address type label. That'd make it about 8" wide and 5" tall, or a 9" diagnal screen...

Having looked at the picture and only reading up to this post by "mrgreen4242' on the 2nd page, I just have to say that if this is real, I too believe this to be much larger than the actual vPod [9"w x 12"h for full size view of 8.5" x 11" pages] and almost exactly what I envisioned the MacPod/MacPad to look like.

Gawd I hope it is a touch sensitive MacPod/MacPad and that it's little brother is the vPod.

I do a lot of work as an assistant editor on that show for the network. Every time we watch we dream of working for them...

Just so we can have access to the toys they use to do things with audio and video that are impossible!;)

I think it's a winner too.

Looks like a 16:10 format screen. 720x450? 768x480?

Couple that with downloadable movies from iTMS, at the same resolution ...

I agree that i think it's a winner, but I think we'll bee seeing the launch of Apple's online movie store with the releases of the vPod and maybe larger MacPod/MacPad.

Fake

Why? It's too perfect.

The color bars, the "Chinese", the bar code with handwriting near it, the blacked out date-stamp, the similarity to the last leaked 5G photo!!!

It's just what they want us to think. So it's a fake. And I want one too.
