Yet another new image!

Either this is real, or several people have figured out what it actually is and are joining in on the prank.

Edit: Oh right someones been playing with a 5G ipod. Boring. I notice the original image is proportionately slight wider than a 5G iPod so I don't think this is it.

Do you work in Video? It doesn't seem like you know what you're talking about. I'm no expert, but that signal is very similar to one of the signals I use to calibrate my monitors here at work. It's a digital signal transmitted into a device with a digital video input (HD SDI, SDI, or whatever firewire thing the iPod uses).

The digital signal only need to be compressed if it is being recorded for playback. If it is simply being fed into the screen for QC or calibration it can be uncompressed.

What is shown on the screen is a test pattern...nothing more. it has nothing to do with digital or analog. You can send test patterns over any type of video cable, because it's no different than any other video signal.

That's suspicious just from being too clean and simple a shot, but it doesn't look bad. I'm going to guess the original is real and this one is just imitation. (All guesses.)

Prediction: discussion will now proceed into flooring materials, in an effort to judge the scale of the image. Experts from THAT field will crawl from the woodwork :D

Like the other shots, it could potentially be faked by photoshopping two 5G photos, one with the screen on the left and one on the right--and retouch the middle. Anyone want to make some fakes like that just to stir the pot? I was thinking of doing it with my 4G :)

I agree with your prediction. I specialize in wallpaper, so I can't help here. Lol.

I disagree though. The last one was a good effort to imitate the previous photo that turned out to be real, which you would expect from a hoaxer willing to do some work. Good, but with various odd points that can't be explained as expected anamolies and control-freak supervisors. This one, though equally dull in product design, at least looks like a real photo at first glance. The only thing keeping me from saying it's real is my hope that it's not, and Apple has some way to deal with the whole how to hold the iPod comfortably problem.

{EDIT} that, and it seems to be a fake too, from that other site's pic.

It's my hope that they market it as a mac, and not an ipod...you know, along the lines of the Mac nano. Does everyone remember Home-to-go? It was a feature of panther that was scrapped at the last minute. Think of plugging this baby into your mac, and it syncing with your home folder. You could go to any mac, plug it in, and be using your home folder, preferences..everything. Don't have a mac near by? that's okay, it's essentially a computer on it's own. basic functionality through itunes, iphoto, ical. it plays your videos. note that its not being marketed as a video ipod, much like the current 5g. its a mac, just with portable video abilities. text input is done through an on screen keyboard that appears when 4 fingers are present on the screen. here's a feature set that you will be seeing:
It's mac os Xi, not the ipod os, and it will feature for sure itunes and safari. it has wireless built in, and will have the ability to play music over an airport express. ichat, yes. apple will also be introducing their own ipod style boombox which will also have its own hard drive. the pictures you see are real. the form factor is bigger than a normal ipod with a 16:10 aspect screen, 640x pixels. about $500 bucks to start out. still unsure about isight...
oh, and did i mention widgets? there will be a new app out that will allow people to more easily develop their widgets (dashcode) and have them to go anywhere. new widgets, like those provided by google, will make this handheld very slick to use. http://www.google.com/macwidgets/index.html

Hence - "MobileMe" !

with the amount of abuse that some ipods get during normal use. I can see alot of screens breaking. I like the picture, I hope its real, it can go either way. I was very inclined to believe it was real until the poster above said it could be two 5gs photoshoped and retouched in the center. That seems very plausible for the second picture but the original is striking...all I can say is keep your pants on we will know tuesday. Plus I fear the pricepoint for this ipod will be 399

That GIF of the 5G's screen simply being stretched is disheartening. I really hope we're not talking about a photoshop.
Instinct (and little else!) tells me the new image is a copycat fake of a legitimate original image.

But unless I misunderstand the translation, that link doesn't prove it IS a fake, it merely shows the a method for how it COULD have been faked.

The dimensions and screen margins look the same as the 5G iPod. That alone is not suspicious to me, though. (In fact, the 5G and this thing may have always been intended to match and co-exist in the lineup.

Sure, I know, but if it works one way... Who knows French?

Any chance you could take a photo of this screen or show as an image of it from the web?

Sure, here is a video. You have to first reset the iPod then boot into the diagnostics menu by holding rewind and the center button as son as it reboots. Then hit menu for manual test, select IO, Display, Color. Then you just press the center button to change the color. Can you all read .mpg files? It's on a quick iWeb site that I made. It might take a little while to load. Let me know if this works:

Any all-screen video device is wide, and I'm not sure it would be all that painful to just let it rest in your hand. But I'm sure Apple will use the obvious solution: the iPod will be sideways, but mounted on a stick like a lollipop.

I hope if they come out with something like this that they still make the current 60gig iPod or something similar to it. I don't want anything bigger than that as for size. I really think this full screen iPod would be tough to carry around and apart from that the excessive marks the screen would get over time would reall get on my nerves.

I think we'd better start saying WHICH image we're talking about :)

I propose the names:

Sticky (sticker and color test)
Handy (black with hand)
Woody (wood floor)
Blurry (white background and pea soup fog)
Clyde (the super-blurry one with the thumb making the device look small)

EDIT: in the post above we have Blurry, Woody, Clyde AND Handy :)

Sticky remains my favorite. Some things don't need a remake.

(Except a Bono RED version would be cool to see next.)

The extra dian is a real puzzler though, thats a total formalisim in my limited experience, not somthing you write out unless you are an 18th century official, a computer or some guy with a pompous writing style.

Could it be the continuation of another charecter on the other side of the tape?

I don't know what's more absurd; the fact that this thread has 742 posts or the fact that I'm following it....

this is painful.

I bet Steve Jobs is laughing right now. Its all a hoax and there wont even be a new ipod at the event tuesday.

Wouldnt that just suck?

"Im terribly thrilled about this, THE NEW...no its not an ipod Intel Mac Mini."
Millions of hearts break all at once.

Ok we know all 5 cant be real(if any are at all) so the question is which can we prove are fake.

The link above shows just how easy it is to fake, so the sudden explosion of pics of similar devices just further discredits the original.

No it doesn't. All 4 of the imitations look like fakes, the original is a lot more complex and convincing - if it is a fake its a much better one.

Right off the bad, Handy is fake. Look at the thickness of the black border behind his thumb, then look at it in front of his thumb. Also, look at the choppiness of the screen along the bottom. FAKE!
