Lap, desk, hands, or whatever... 18" is about how far away a portable device is while in use. Portable devices won't replace movie theaters, obviously. But they can provide a viewfield similar in size to home TVs--that's what I was surprised to discover.

I agree with Nagromme. To the person who thinks 18 inches it too far away, think about how silly we would all look holding screens right up to our face. I think most people hold a PSP or other portable video devices close to 18 inches from their face. 18 inches really isn't that far.

Searching Google for "readability of white on black text" returns no results which suggest that white on black is better than black on white. Some sources suggest it is the same, while most give the slight edge to black on white.

I had a quick search on Google and found some credible* web sites that support what you're saying. It's interesting as I had always read the opposite.

However some conditions have obviously changed in monitors over the last decade or so which seem to influence the change. Refresh rates is one thing as well as a few other highly technical things. Other things I saw mentioned were that black on white is more familiar (unfamiliarity breeds contempt!) and black screens tend to reflect more glare.

*I found the site http://www.visualexpert.com/FAQ/Part6/cfaqPart6.html#p6.3 good reading for anyone else interested in this subject. I was amazed at how many sites came up that claimed to talk about legibility/readability on-screen that went against what I think most would agree. E.G. Lines lengths of 20 or so words, serif type on screen, bold text across the whole articles!

I was! Man was that fun!

How did anyone manage to make a video that looked that realistic? Did they like build the actual thing or did they just computerize the whole graphic? I saw the video and it just seems so real.

You're right. Sorry for some reason I was imagining you holding it straight out 18 inches away. LOL

How about this? (yes it's fake - I know 'cause I drew it)

It's a fake. The top and bottom edges are not parallel. I am not a professional photog but I know in that photo the top and bottom edges of a true rectangular object should be parallel and they are clearly not.

All the houses in my street are like this too. Are they fake? What kind of fantasy land am I living in? Oh, I just read about this thing called 'perspective'. They can explain anything away these days but we both know this world is really FAKE!!

Another problem...

Why is the mainstream press (and other rumors sites) staying away from this?

Smartphone anyone?

Why no speclation that this could be a smartphone? Convergent devices are all the rage at the moment. I am either going to pay 1000 for a HTC Universal or 700 for a SONY p990 ... why wouldnt you buy an APPLE smartphone for the same price>

Something that would revolutionize an existing product - Like the IPOD did for MP3 players.

I say smartphone! The leaked pics, ical hint - it all fits.

SMARTPHONE SMARTPHONE SMARTPHONE!!! I want I want I want :D

Just because it's not great evidence, I would say. It's interesting to guess about, but we don't know if it means anything real or not. So it's like an anonymous email to a rumor site making a wild claim--as opposed to a trusted "source" doing the same.

Sounds cool, but prepare for disappointment :) Our wildest Mac Rumors dreams seldom come true when we want. (In fact, that fact alone makes an all-screen iPod of ANY kind unlikely :) )

I believe a few pages back someone made the point about the barcode itself reading as an 8. So I see no need for further discussion on that point.

Anyways, with all the in-depth image analysis that I've seen here, I'm still firmly of the opinion that Sticky is a fake. Granted it's a pretty good fake, but a fake nonetheless.

:( :p

It's funny though, it might be a niche market but look at it - people are willing to pay between 700 (p990) and a thousand (!!) (jasjar). It costs as much as an ibook but meets a different need. I know that I would NOT be buying a video ipod because I don't need to wztch movies on a itty bitty screen. Add a smartphone as an 'extra' .. I would pay up to 800 for it.

Apple rumors are always good for generating traffic and buzz. Usually you can find the tech press acknowledging the rumor, if only to present it as wild speculation. It seems unusually quiet this time.

If you're going to go to that extent why not goa ll the way and add one more feature - phonebook/organizer/email capability to make it a true convergence device?

(i know i'm beating a dead horse here but i reeeeaaalllly want an APPLE smartphone)

The device knows it's orientation in a 3-D space.

Something I thought of, there is nothing on the device that indicates the top of the screen as opposed to the bottom, UNLESS... It has sensing technology that rotates the screen based on it's postion in space when the screen is activated. Thats the only explanation because how many times would you pick it up and go, doh upside down again. This same orientation sensing ablity would also allow you to turn the device in space 90 degrees and have it render the screen in a traditional iPod format, like some one has already mocked-up a few posts ago.

Remember, Apple did submit patents for those accelerometers (they would sense the movements and control what was on the screen accordingly) a couple weeks ago and the sketches in that patent showed someone using a tablet in playing a game and other activities.

As for the initial pic, I will say that I'm 77% sure its real. I see that barcode as a B, I did from the beginning before I found out that an 8 was for server. Some of the straight lines had led me to think maybe fake but those can be very easily explained away by jpeg compression artifacts. We will find out on Tuesday!

Gravity switch. Been using them for years!

Grammar School Chinese Characters Anyone?

Now I had to register to say this. I have been a student of Chinese/Japanese for going on twelve years and I was thinking, huh, did anyone else who studies the characters notice the lack of basic skill and/or brush stroke order on this "video ipod?" Sorry to crush the dream folk but I think this is a phone knee. ;)

In the simpletons terms, that Chinese there, it was not written by a native hand.

Seen on /.

MS is apparently going to release something called Origami on Thursday 2006/03/02.

Look familiar? ;) Could this be what we are looking at. I hope not.

If, and this is a big IF, M$ gets into the convergent device market, and beats Apple to the punch, I'm going to show up at 4 Infinite Loop with a chainsaw, bible and a smile. Not a friendly smile either, one of those twisted, bloodlusty, PCP-induced, looped-the-friggin'-loop smiles. Think toothy Jack Nicholson in The Shining smiles.

I'd join you, as many others at MR.

For what it's worth. The only significant "convergent devices" on the market today are the Windows powered smartphones. This seems like it could be a more media centric variant of those. If the size reports are correct (4x8x1.5 ish) it's far too big for many things, but fills an interesting niche between a full video iPod/PSP and a full tablet PC.
