Everybody has different needs . . .

I agree with what likethesoup2 points out that not everyone has the same requirements for a smartphone.

There are people who really do live by their smartphone. These people may feel that 64GB isn't enough.

For me, I like to do as much as I can on a tablet rather than a smartphone. So I'd prefer to get the least expensive iPhone and put the rest of the money towards an iPad.

It's enough for me. I don't need to store all my movies and music on my device because i'll never watch or listen to all of it on a regular basis.

16 is perfect for me. But on the other hand, I have a 32gb iPad mini that i can put all my games and big files on. I still think 16 is plenty though.

I've never had a problem with 16GB. It isn't that I can't afford 32GB, just that it's overkill for me.

I use Spotify for music streaming. Don't play many games. I have a few utility apps along with some social networking apps, but that's pretty much all. Of course my pictures and videos take up some space too but I sync them with iPhoto, so there's never enough on my iPhone to take up more than a gigabyte. And I don't put movies or TV shows on it unless I'm going somewhere that I can't bring my MacBook.

I've cut the number of actual songs in my iPhone down to around 300 now that I have iTunes Match. Freed up a ton of space and my entire library is available for streaming. Still have a 32GB but I could probably use a 16GB now.

I've seen this topic discussed on Macrumors before. What's really surprising to me is that the majority of users on a forum like this find 16 GB to be roughly enough for them. With all of the types of media available it really doesn't seem like very much to me.

16 has always been plenty for me. I guess it depends on the person and what they like to have on their phone. I have seen where ppl say 32 may be the smallest future size, if that's true I will be going with that I guess. I've just never used a lot of space. I have the 16GB and still have 8.1GB free space.

Why do you need 18gbs of movies on your device all the time? You can only watch one at a time, a few a day at the most.
I don't. But, as I mentioned earlier, it's the Honeymooner's episodes. I have 64GB of room and this is the only set of movies I ever really intended to load on there. Just like to catch a quick episode whenever I have to wait somewhere.

Also, it's easier to just leave them all on there. All of my Macs are PowerPC, therefore I cannot sync my iPhone 5 on my Macs. So, I have to rely on an old slow 1Ghz PC with a USB 1.0 port. I don't really care to be syncing every day for a few videos. I can transfer using Netatalk (my iPhone is jailbroken) but I still have to wait for the copy. So, this is just easier. For me anyway.

Ahhh I see. I'm the same way with Anime. What threw me off is that you said "movies", as in 2hr+ videos :)

Ah! LOL. Sorry about that. I suppose I should say videos.

The Classic 39 (Honeymooners) are all apx. 20-25 mins and the Lost Episodes can be as short as 8 mins or so. So, no, no feature length movies on my iPhone. ;)

if you play games on your phone, take pictures and video, and play music.

then no it is not enough.

could i deal with 16? sure but i would constantly be deleting files and pictures. and i am too lazy to do that.

and so i got a 32.

thats the same reason i got a 32GB.

I consider myself a power user, in the sense that I like to dig deep into the OS and make changes and use advanced settings and etc.

that said, I don't use very many apps on my phone, the most i've ever had installed is 30 and I have about 22 installed right now.

I use up ~6-7GB of my phone, depending on how much is in my photos app and how many apps I have installed at that moment, and about 3GB of that is music.

Overall it really just depends on your needs. I know people who have nearly maxed out their 64GB iPhones, I even have a friend who has used up more than 3/4th of his 128GB iPad. How people manage to do this (without just loading loads of HD video onto their phone), I'll never know.

As far as an iPhone or iPod touch, I'd say 16GB is a perfect amount. On an iPad however, while 16GB is ok and probably the model i'd buy for price concerns, I think that 32GB should be more the standard and optimal price. I'm sure probably with the iPad 5 or iPad 6, Apple will drop the 16GB iPad and give the 32GB iPad the 16GB's pricetag.

Well, it's quite easy to use up 64 GB if you really watch what you're doing. People would buy a few noise here and there, 4~10 GB right there (4S and above downloads in 1080p). If you haven't been seeing game sizes, they are growing quite fast since the retina updates. Around 100MB ~ 3,6GB depending on what you download (most everyone is going to have a bunch of Angry Bird type game taking around ~250 MB). Apps can take a lot of space, Facebook is know to take up to 300MB in app caches and possibly more. Flipboard now has a clear caches option because of this issue. So app will take quite amount of space. Most likely around 6 GB. Music varies so it could be around 100MB to 30 GB of music in storage. This is assuming 128 KB/S. more if you have 320 KB/S. And over the life of the phone, seeing deals on apps or one that you like will gradually take up space. 64GB can be used quite quickly depending on the user.

if you dont use 16 GB, you're not a power user

how can you call yourself a power user? only 1,000 songs and how many are them are good quality?

i have 15,000 songs, i get high end graphic games and low ones, many utility apps, shopping apps, including apps that i have developed,

and movies? forget about it better off getting a seagate satellite wi-fi external harddrive because no way you'll be able to fit movies on it even with a 64 GB

HD photos, and i use my 64 GB as a emergency hard drive (important file sfor work, or movies i gotten from a friend, etc etc)

lmfao at dudes saying they're power users and 16 GB is enough, if 16 GB is enough you're not a power user, you're not using the iphone to the fullest capability.

1,000 songs? lmfao just because you use your phone a lot doesnt make you a power user.

edit: just like if you use a computer alot. just because you're on your computer browsing or streaming all day doesnt make you a power user. you can do so much with a computer and same goes with an iphone and iPad

Depends on your definition of "power user".

Personally I don't consider having a 10,000 songs and poorly optimized videos clogging up all your space being a "power user". You just described up girlfriends 64gb iPhone. Lol

I have nearly twice the amount of videos/movies on my iPhone that are higher quality AND using the same amount of space.

I'd hardly consider size of storage to determine much of anything.

My next upgrade will be a 32GB iPhone. I've had the 16GB iPhone 4 and 4S but now I get a few 'not enough space' errors when installing apps. Sure I could take my videos and photos off regularly, but apps are going to get bigger and more space would be nice.

I am in the same boat as you but i got this as a gift and am stuck with an iPhone 5 16GB. But at least i got an iPhone!

I am perfectly happy with my 16 gig device. I don't use it for music since both the iphone and a couple of ipods I've tried introduce noise to my car audio system. My moto razr hd doesn't, so it's my portable music device.

Nowhere near enough for me, I have a 16GB 4S and I use my old iPhone 4 (16GB) for extra space. Both are pretty much filled all the way up.

I need a 64GB, but I'm not willing to pay an extra $200 for it.

Initially I thought it was going to be enough since I don't really game on my iPhone, but my music alone eats up 5GB. Also, im a first time iphone user, so i was pretty impressed with the app store and went on a download spree lol. Definitely picking up at least a 32 next time.

Plenty enough for me. My music and movies are in the cloud and I don't download that many apps; just the ones I use consistently. I also don't have any big games installed; just stuff like Tetris and solitaire.

Does anyone here really feel like a 16GB iphone is enough for them? I consider myself a power user and find myself coming nowhere close to filling all 16 gigs. (sort of just thinking out loud here)
Yes.

I have a 16GB.

141 apps.
Several playlists synced, 3.5GB of music
Jetpack, Cut the Rope and sequels, qvoid, pocket planes, Quell, etc etc etc. two folders worth

3.8GB still free.
