I've never thought of a Range Rover as a "girl car". But it is an overpriced, unreliable, ugly hulk of a vehicle. It's reputation for real offroading (as in, climbing mountains and fjording streams, not the running around in the dirt most people do) is strong. As others said, unless you plan to do that kind of offroading, you'll be driving a low-mileage, high-maintenance, square SUV for no good reason. Every person I've ever talked to who owned a Range Rover said they broke down constantly.

All SUVs have become "girlie" in that the vast majority of owners (im making up stats based on my real world experience) are female...my thoughts are that the rich husbands buy them to keep their women "safe" from all the bad drivers on the road. :p

Dang, time to sell my SUV. Not a RR though. My dad had a couple and my mom had one. The older classics are a good deal, if you like the looks and getting 14mpg at best with a small 15 gallon tank. Also it had the horn on the left windshield wiper or turn signal (can't remember) stalk. You would hit the end of it. Odd car.

I would buy one, but not new and make sure it was covered under warranty. My father said if you buy a range rover or a jaguar, might as well buy two because one will always be in the shop.

I like the looks of them and don't consider them girlie at all. But a college kid of normal age? Unless that is the normal car for people at your school, I think you would look like you are trying too hard. Get a Grand Cherokee or a Tahoe.

OP, I'm not clear on your definition of "luxury" SUV. Are you talking about brand, Cadillac, Mercedes, Lexus, etc. or are you talking about features like roominess, leather, NAV system, etc.? You can easily overpay for a quality SUV by going Land Rover, Lexus, BMW, etc. or you can get a quality and luxury SUV that is more affordable like a Suburban, Expedition, Highlander, etc. My wife has always dreamed about a fully loaded Toyota Land Cruiser. Of course with a $65,000+ price tag most people would consider this a luxury SUV even though it's not from a luxury brand.

Yes, a H2 with 22" chromes is a man's car.

A H2? Pfft.

Now this is a real mans car.

Heh! A couple of days ago I dropped off a family of four that got into one of those. It's been awhile since I had seen one. The father was a tech geek, so it was pretty funny watching them climb in.

Talk about it. I used to work at a Chevy/Lotus/Hummer dealer as a lot attendant. I drove I believe 2 H1's while I was there. I believe they were both Duramax models and they were loud as crap and could hear every rattle when going over even small bumps. I loved it. :) Don't have to worry about bad drivers I can just smash them or just plain go over them. :D

And if I go to the town Clarkson took it, I can command the road and tell others to get the hell out of my way because it takes up the whole width of the road. :p

It is precisely drivers like that make me hate big SUVs. I'm not directing these comments at anyone in particular (I know you're half kidding anyway), but I've seen more lousy drivers who think they own the road just because they're in a big plastic SUV: They pull out in front of me, hog the middle line, run red lights, etc.

I always laugh because the majority of the time the vehicle is too big for them anyway and you see them inching, inching, inching their way into a parking space.

They're ... not their.

I can understand the rich hitting up college. College for them is an experience and not an education. I don't even fault them for that. If they truly make $500k a year playing poker then they should be fairly well-known on the poker scene. I highly doubt anything you're saying it very true but that's not really the point.

You've come across much more poorly in this thread than the OP, in all honesty. Not particularly the point above, which I've responded to below, but a few of the others. Such loathing of... a forum user.

I'm not sure what you mean by stating his friends should be fairly well known on the poker scene - I imagine they are. That said, with even the top 100th ranked at pocketfives.com regularly taking 50k final tables, I lose track of +500k/ year players, and I follow the scene.

I know. I wish people who drive Suburbans would realize how freaking big their vehicle is. You can't stay in the middle of your lane because then you're invading the other lane because it takes up most of the lane. But nope, I see them constantly hugging the middle of the road invading the other lane.

Yeah, I was kidding after the line, " I loved it". Yeah, I did like the H1. I liked that was all brawn and you could hear the diesel engine. Would I buy one? No due to having no use for it. I don't go off road and it is really really wide.

Girls can drive any type of car, be it a man car or a girl car. However, men can only drive a man car... unless they're gay then they can drive either. :D

I can't possibly tell you how much I love these "is this a girl car" "is the white iphone for girls" etc. threads. It's so much fun to watch the little boys be insecure. ;)

For the record, this is a girls car (or at least this girl's dream car), so you probably shouldn't buy one.

Taking the risk of owning, say, a pink Ford Ka would make you look pretty confident - i.e. manly (EDIT: though this one may be going a little far).

It depends on the region. The BMW X3 is considered a chick car here in the US. But in Italy rich men seem to drive them. Mega rich men drive the X5's.
Here - X5 are fairly common. People don't understand we get more freedom from the free market than the US Constitution. Socialism doesn't work!

I better take cover! :p

Range Rovers meet this mans machismo requirements, as speed bumps are easily conquered. Range Rover also appeals to his more feminine side, plenty of room for mall shop treasures.

That is in no way easy, not something "anyone can do", and the swings are highly volatile. I really doubt they are pulling in 500k a year consistently.

Yeah, once poker was mentioned I automatically translated that to, "Dude! If I won as much every night as I won tonight, I'd be making $500k a year!"

Your US car manufacturers sure are doing well.

Exactly. And if you must buy a high-end capable SUV, use the same money for a used Mercedes G500. (NOT the GL).

At least we still have a US auto industry where most of the British auto industry got bought up mostly by the Germans, Americans, and now Indians( with Tata owning Jag and Land Rover now).

Correct. And if yo mean well known I the poker community, people are much more known for their display names than their actual names, often not even reviling those (ie istdr1 or howevr that sweed spells it). Fame, like the few well known pros that are always on tv is notthe norm for most successful players, many of whic have never stepped foot in a casino due to age or preference.
