[doublepost=1531794415][/doublepost]Here I sit with my 2018 MacBook Pro 15" 2.9GHz i9/32 GB RAM/1TB SSD/Radon Pro 560x/Space Gray/Apple Care. I was going to pull the trigger on Friday the 13th but waiting until early AM on the 14th. Was shocked then to see that the nearest Apple Store had the exact spec model I wanted; considering it's an upgraded one I bit the bullet and did a store pickup. It's normally a 2 hr drive each way but since I live at the beach a Saturday is the worse day to travel so I got up early Sunday morning and picked it up when they opened @ 11 AM. I am pleased so far. The keyboard is quieter but nowhere near silent. I thought I'd turn off TrueTone but have left it on and am getting used to it. The added Ram is a huge plus. The GPU has yet to kick in from what I can tell even after watching 4K video. Might be since is is an upgrade over the last then the faster CPU and Ram combo. The USB-C ports are much stiffer so hopefully they won't loosen up. The speakers are a huge improvement, but the old ones I thought were very good to begin with. I. use Coconut Battery so I know the remaining battery life in time instead of %. It said my battery was made on 06/22/2018 but I digress to say I've only used it once on battery and I didn't time it to see how long I actually used it but it appears to be = to the 2017 or better and better than the (2) 2016 models. I'd preferred to had a larger hard drive but with tax I was close to $4,600 for this machine. I use storage differently than most as I offload finished files to either iCloud (this machine doesn't sync to my iMac but the iCloud for it shows up on my MBP) or to a NAS drive. One last note, the machine fans don't seem to run as much. This was an issue with the last 3 machines if it was on my lap as the side exhaust vents tend to get covered if you sit cross legged. I'll update more after I have the machine longer. One last thing, I called Apple today about the 2017 MBP and they are sending a box for it to go in for repair. It will be interesting to see what they replace on it this time. It will then beI've had (2) 2016 MBPt 15' and (1) 2017 MBPt 15' and they've all had major issues.
#1 - 2016 MBPt 15" 2.7ghz/512GB purchased on 11/17/2016 was taken to the Apple store on 12/30/2016 for service. They determined that the logic board had gone and refunded my purchase price. This was just outside of the return period. The issues were an occasional "pop" noise that turned into an often explosive "pop" or "crack" sound. They keys on the keyboard would not always function or wouldn't function. The USB-C ports would randomly eject the power cord of USB dongles. The noises and ejecting of the USB-C cords would occur on a desk so the computer was not being moved. The touchpad would not work in certain locations.
#2 - 2016 MBPt 15" 2.7ghz/512GB was purchased on 12/30/2016 when I returned the one above. All was well for 5 months and then all of the same issues with #1 started to occur. This time it wasn't gradual but all of a sudden and the symptoms were much worse. This computer was taken to the Apple store on 07/25/2017 and the issues were replicated and the computer was sent to Apple for repair. The tech noted that the computer showed no signs of damage and was in flawless condition! Apple returned the computer with a new logic board and processor and replaced the display assembly.
#3 - 2017 MBPt 15" 3.1ghz/1TB/RP 560 4 GB was purchased on 07/12/2017 in anticipation of sending back #2 and then selling it on Craigslist. All of the same problems with computers #1 & #2 occurred with this computer and it was taken to the Apple Store on 11/14/2017 and the tech was able to replicate the issues. He also noted that there was no damage to the computer and it was in flawless like new condition. The computer was sent off to Apple for repair and returned says that the display assembly was replaced due to a built in audio device problem and the top case with battery was also replaced due to specific keys not working. Here I sit on 07/13/2018 and the computer needs to go back to Apple. The noise has returned; the touchpad is starting to not work in locations and the USB-C plugs have been acting up since Apple returned it to me the first time. Two new issues are that the display all of a sudden got dimmer and cannot be turned back up to it's original level and occasionally I will be using it and the whole tone and color gamut of the display will suddenly change. For the haters, I keep the "Automatically adjust brightness" and Night Shift turned off. I've reset the SMC, NVRAM/PRAM and repaired permissions with no luck in these issues changing.
Apple is an arrogant company who's favorite tactic is to deny-deny-deny. Unfortunately I'm stuck in the Apple ecosystem as I own a 2017 iMac 27" 4.2ghz; iPhone X 256GB and iPad Air 2. I don't trust my MBPt so I guess I will loose some more money and buy a 2018 version and sell the old one. My hope is that with so much moving off the logic board to the T2 chip that a lot of the design issues will be gone and that hopefully the new keyboard will be an improvement? I had issue with the keyboard on my MBPr even though I weekly blew it out with compressed air. There were times I had to take the keys off and disassemble the hinge system and then reassemble it.
I’d love an OLED monitor on a 13”.No OLED displays are what's keeping me from not spending current prices on these (I got a 2017 refurb 15-inch instead). I tell you, if you're used to seeing deep blacks on an OLED TV like I am, you won't want to go back.
CPU performance upgrades and all are great for the 2018's, but to me, the package is not complete unless complimented by a modern screen.
I know that OLED's may not be practical for laptops due to "burn in" issues but once you own a OLED product you never want to go back to LCD. I have an LG B7P OLED TV and every time go back to watch a movie on my MacBook Pro, the blacks just don't look the same.I’d love an OLED monitor on a 13”.
I'm on the 2014 MBP and would like an upgrade, (256GB is killing me).
I just can't seem to let it go though - it's got the SD card slot which I don't think I could live without.
nah, if all goes well I hope I don't upgrade my Mac (2016 nTB) until its out of warranty and not covered by the extended keyboard warranty (a 4th year on that one) which is end of 2019 for AC and 2020 for keyboard.
I used to upgrade Macs somewhat feverishly but over the years found it less necessary and I enjoy riding out a machine for a while if possible
I did leap from 2015 12" MB to this machine tho, 1st gen to 1st gen![]()
