But if others are bringing your brand down by saying bad things about it, you, as a human will try to defend it.

What? Unless I had money invested in the issue, why the heck should I give a flying fudge about what someone I don't know thinks about some brand X that I happen to like?

I switched to OSX a little over a year ago with absolutely no prior experience. I use my computer for architectural drafting, 3D modelling, graphics, photo editing, and document layout. So, I do have a pretty complex workflow.

It took me about a week to be 90% switched over. With Windows 7 out, two two platforms are even more similar than when I switched. Aside from what the fanboys will tell you, there isn't that much of a difference between the two anymore. Both have their merits, and to be honest I cannot say which is ultimately better. The only real difference for me is this: I find OSX is more elegant and secure than Windows. Windows on the other hand feels a little more powerful and far more flexible.

If you want to stay retarded about Windows, I fully understand that. It may well be the far superior tool for doing your work. Hopefully you're not one of the people who bash Windows blindly though.
You can say whatever you want, but I WORK (i have to) with Windows 7 on a daily basis, and IT IS NOT like Mac OSX.
You guys were saying the same, exact thing, some years ago, when Microsoft released Vista: "It's not like XP ... it's like OSX ... it's better than OSX" and we all seen what happened.
I like Win7 much more than Vista, but it is NOT like OSX.

Yeah, sorry, that's pretty dumb. I like OS X as much as the next guy, but it's not like Windows 7 is an abomination. And if we took your post to heart, it would basically mean that Apple can never do wrong - even if they release the crappiest computer on earth, it will still be superior to everything else because it doesn't run Windows. Hey guys, it may only be a Core 2 Duo, but at least it's not a WINDOWS CRAPBOOK
As I said, such an attitude is not a sound basis for elucidating discussions. Please accept that for some people, their choice of software is not akin to a religious faith. I like OS X, as I said, but I'm not married to it and I could easily do my work using Windows 7. So if I see cheaper PCs that outspec the MBP in every way possible, it's kind of frustrating (and no, I'm not talking about cheap plastic crapbooks, but true mobile workstations like the Elitebook or certain Thinkpads). I WANT to stay with Apple, but they're making it hard for me. I'm sure others are in a simily situation and it could be worthwile to discuss the PC-world's offering. If Apple's products are truly superior, why would such a discussion have to be curtailed? And if you're so incredibly happy with what Apple has to offer, why do you even post in such discussions?

Apple did a lot of wrong thing, and the delayed update of the MBP's lineup is an example (same thing for the Mac pro).
This is not my point.
But a mobile workstation like an Elitebook ora a Thinkpad isn't an option for me, because they could have a wonderful hardware, but they are ugly and they can't run Mac OSX.
Mind you, I will take back everything I said as soon as Apple release the new MBP with quad-core option, Blu-Ray and a decent GPU ;)

Not going to happen in the near future, because there isn't a MOBILE quad-core cpu and Apple doesn't see Blu-Ray like an high-def media (they prefer digital delivery).
We'll see about a decent GPU.

Apple has a great marketing team, they feed their users with this egoistic attitude that Windows is old and boring and Apple is new and the future, and people buy it. The simple fact is that Apple has sold to you. Benchmark tests prove that OS X is really not that different to Windows, it's all about preference really

:)
there is no benchmark for the "user experience" ...

But I agree with you: it's all about preference. if you don't like Mac OSX, if you think you can live with the "wonderful" Windows7, you surely should buy a Windows notebook and sign up a subscription to a windows forum.
What is the need to come here and show us "poor ignorant people" how cool is your "16 core Windows notebook" ?

I'm not speaking about you, but this is only one example of the hundreds post in this forum written by new users with no interest at all in Apple's products.

don't forget applecare

frankly...i don't find the MBPs a ripoff mainly because I don't have an other machine in the market which can compare to it...So basically, Apple has an advantage of being the only laptop manufacturer in this league....

BUT...AppleCare is a ripoff...at that price..it does not even offer accidental cover...no on-site service.....
And it is not like you don't need to buy AppleCare..Apple's quality has been slipping and buying AppleCare is a must!!!

In my book, I would call that a ripoff...

I totally agree with you.

I really don't understand how people can defend a corporation?...like someone is insulting your race or religion?

Apple and the Macintosh have always had it's share of fanatics. This is where the "cult" mentality comes from that is often associated with Mac/Apple users.

People enjoy the brand, culture and computer. I'm one of them. :apple:

I agree with HellDiverUK completely. PCs barely last for 4 years, usually they conk out before that. They also get unbearably slow, requiring constant maintenance and virus checks.

"Is Apple Ripping Us Off"?

Well, I got a fairly high-spec refurbished MBP for £1000 last year and it's been the best computer I've had. So my answer is an emphatic "no".

9400M+9600 (which is actually a smaller version of the 7600, a three year old card). Besides many Macbook Pros come with just the 9400M which is way worse.

Where did you get that information, 7600 and 9600 series completely different cores. It may be equal in performance, but they are not the same chips.

Thats great, except Apple is notorious for not changing the prices across it's computers very often if at all.

Elitebooks and Thinkpads look great and are some of the best designed windows laptops available. I know they are not shiny like Apples, but to say they are ugly is a bit bias.

Last year it wasn't a rip off.... But the current price for the same last year? Yes, rip off.

I think its worth the money because its so easy, simple and trouble free to use. Not to mention how delicious the design of the MBP and iMac are...:D

A valid point, but unless you need it right at this second, you can get a closeout MBP as soon as the new models surface in a week or two. I'm not sure what discounts are like in your area, but my university often discounts 30-40% on old model Macs.

I second that regarding the Thinkpad. The T60 and T400s have an understated elegance. Matte Black. It feels good to the touch, has good texture and grip (so you can pickup and carry it in clamshell mode with one hand).

There's a Thinkpad in the Museum of Modern Art in NY.

I wish there was a black option for the MBP, rather than Blingbling Al :-s

full ack!

They're some of the best designed laptops, period.

Personally, I really like the EliteBooks. My client for the last six months has a building full of developers using the outgoing 15" EliteBook (8530w). Aesthetically, the machines have a certain understated, down-to-business sleekness. They're solid, durable, and well-specified. I had ignored HP for years based on their meh consumer line, but it seems that their business-class products are a different story entirely. In fact, I probably will buy either an EliteBook 8740w, 8540w, or a MBP 17" for my Windows work. Unfortunately, in all cases, it's still a waiting game. The 8540w is available for order, but nobody has received theirs yet.

You guys should sign up for congress, you would do just as well as the republicans and democrats with the healthcare debate. I tried to listen to the debate on CNN. What bothers me most, is people actually elected those people.

You shouldn't post replies with political overtones. There is another section for political topics.
