I use a pair of Sennheiser CX300's for working out / running etc, very good SQ for the price and pretty durable, I broke a pair after about 2 years and replaced like for like. I use them on a iPod Classic 120gb & My Nokia N8 using WAV Files.

No point spending 100's on a pair that might break with one wrong move.

* The only problem with the in-ear noise canceling ones, you can hear your heartbeat and breathing pretty loudly on silent parts.

Once, when I was desperate for music and my normal in ear headphones were broken I wore studio headphones to the gym. Yes I did it. mmmmmmmmm.

I didn't do any cardio, but lifted weights and didn't have any problems. They were relatively cheap though, no way would I wear a $500 or more pair of studio headphones to the gym.

I wear HD25s to the gym for a few years and I don't give a toss. They can't be any less cool than Beats. Good isolation, decent sound, comfortable, ridiculously durable and stay in place perfectly. Use the leatherette pads and they wipe clean in a second after my workout. I'm thinking of trying the M50X though as HD25s aren't the best sounding, need max volume or nearly to be loud enough with my phone, and I have that common connector issue they all seem to develop after many years. Over ears might be a step too far though?

I see guys wearing the beats on ear headphones at the gym particularly the guys who use the machines but I've definitely seen a couple of girls with them on the treadmill, I initially used to wonder how they coped with the sweat/heat but that's about it.

Definitely not 70s unless they have antennas sticking out of them. But some smart ass kid may give you the Mickey Mouse gesture. Bose QC earbuds are perfection for the gym.

I've been wearing the earphones that come with iPods for years now at the gym, but when I'm at home I wear studio headphones. Recently I've started to think that maybe I should just wear my studio headphones to the gym. I'm not really one to care about what I look like to other people, but this does seem a bit odd. Are they really out of place or do you think no one would take a second glance?

I've never seen anyone do this before.
Ear buds....

Bumped thread, but still an interesting topic.

I've noticed a huge escalation of people walking around with on/over ear headphones around their neck, not using them - I'm _assuming_ they were, and at some point just needed a convenient place to keep them - but I also have a sneaking suspicion that's it's being done as much for a "style" or "fashion" as it is for utility.

I am not a gym person, but the thread confirms my suspicion that a great many who attend gyms are extremely judgmental, rather censorious, and extraordinarily self-righteous about what are really very minor matters in the wider scheme of things.

I do that, because as you say it's an easy place to keep them when not in use, much like letting earbuds dangle down (assuming you loop them under clothing). I'll be sure to let people know I'm doing it for comfort and not style though. Maybe a shirt will help?

I've never noticed people like this. I'd think ear buds were somewhat safer if you're moving free weights around. I don't think large cans would be ergonomic if you were doing cardio.

I do it as well, but I've seen people, hour after hour not using them (from my biz partner, to my child, to a couple of teens at the airport the other day during my ~5 hour delay).

I don't care, one bit, if you knew me, you'd understand I +really+ do not care ... just an observation. :)

I wear Beats Studio headphones in the gym - have been wearing them for a little over a year. I've tried a number of "earbud" style headphones but I just cannot find a pair that are comfortable and can stay put in my ears (other than the factory Apple earbuds, which I actually like but I prefer something wireless for the gym). I tried a pair of the newest Jaybird earbuds with the foam tips, and I still could not get a comfortable/stable fit. While the Beats Studio headphones are a bit large and gaudy looking, they at least stay put on my head, they do a great job of cancelling out the noise around me, and they sound great (in my opinion).

I used to walk around the neighborhood with UE headphones (big over the ear).

#1 - My GF drove by and thought I looked like a serial killer until she recognized that it was me.
#2 - This was okay in the winter, but uncomfortably hot and sweaty in the summer.

Sweat is not good for headphones. I think the gym would have the same problem with heat and sweat.

On trains, planes, buses, I will wear my B&W P5s, (leather and gorgeous with an excellent sound).

However, for what it is worth, this is not something I will do on the street.

The over-the-ear cups on the headphones get sweaty (that's my biggest gripe about wearing these to the gym aside from the sheer size of them, lol), but the actual speaker/ear piece itself hasn't gotten sweat on it (that I've ever been able to tell).

The other thing I like about headphones like these - people can very clearly see that you're wearing headphones and can immediately assume you cannot hear them, so you don't have people trying to talk to you when you're trying to stay focused (or just don't want to be bothered).
