Apple could try absorbing costs... Apple could raise prices... Apple could hope for exception... The country is doomed. Orange man bad... I'm seeing every comment imaginable except for the one that somehow seems to elude the leftist brain: Build products in the USA - or in countries willing to trade equally. Yes I know that doesn't happen over night. Yet the (unheeded) imperative to begin/increase domestic production was given 8 years ago. Time's up.

And two, many economists told us in 2021 that inflation was temporary and it wasn’t.
Except that it actually was. Inflation jumped to 7% in 2021 and then dropped to 6.5% in 2022 and was back under 3% in 2024.

Yes, there was no negative inflation (because there never is, except when there is an incredibly serious an protracted recession) so prices didn't come back down and incomes have never caught up to the massive inflation that happened in 2021 and 2022. They certainly aren't going to catch up now.

What does trade equally mean? You want the government of other countries to buy American goods and give them out for free to their citizens? You do know why the citizens aren't buying American made Teslas? Because they are poor.

No, it’s time to decide that you are going to keep your iPhone for a few more years instead of upgrading for minimal changes in hardware.
I'm on the fence with mine. I have the 12 Pro, and it is getting close to needing a new battery(which replacing that and keeping it until it loses support was my original plan). But it might just be worth it to get a new one now instead to restart that clock...

people will pay up for a new front facing camera - this will launch a super cycle

There was a time when everything was made in America. Yes, even Apple Computers, some of which I own. And we prospered.

There was a time where most people with just a high school diploma could retire with a pension.
Corporate America just got greedy.

As someone with an M.B.A. myself, I'm not a typical corporate type, and agree it's time to make America self-sufficient again. Every country should be self-sufficient.

I believe in free trade and fair competition. And that's NOT what we currently have.

Profits will fall off a cliff if they DON'T touch pricing. The shareholders are not going to stomach taking the cost on their own, Apple's board of directors will insist on price increases to maintain margin, and a return to the shareholders.
Which then cliff the demand and sales, hurting profit either way. Either Apple stomach the tariff to maintain sales levels, or give up sales to maintain profit margins. Apple will lose money big time this time. They won’t be able to dodge tariff like last time.

I am ready to do my patriotic duty and pay $50 for an American made beach flip flops at Walmart.
Nah, why pay $50 when you can pay $150 for American made beach flip flop while allowing companies to automate production with no worker involvements whatsoever.

Taxing their own citizens by imposing massive tariff is not the way to do it though, unless you are happy to pay 5x to 15x of item price for an unspecified number of years waiting for companies to move production back to US, if they move them back at all.

Trump is Making America Great Depression Again! That's what it says on the red hats, right?

I have upgraded my iPhone nearly every year since the original iPhone. I'm not paying this much for a new Pro. Skipping this year. The economy is scary enough that I doubt I would upgrade at this point even if they try to salvage this. Holding on to my AppleCare+ to fix any issues that come up with my Mac or iPhone. My Watch and iPad aren't important.

See y'all in the bread lines. Oh wait, we won't get those this time because the agency that provides that was gutted by Elon and his teenage accomplice who goes my the nickname "BigBalls" online. Reality is so stupid.

Did you see the 1996 video where Nancy Pelosi attacked China's tariffs on the United States?

Did you know Barack Obama imposed tariffs on Chinese tires in 2009?

Why did Joe Biden keep the Trump tariffs during his administration?

This is not a Democrat or Republican issue. At least, it wasn't until Trump got re-elected.

I just read this article on Apple News… and upgraded my 13 Pro Max to a 16 Pro Max … was going to wait for the 17 but I’m not paying those prices. I’m pissed, frankly. I bought a new car earlier than I planned because of these tariffs and I didn’t realize how much the tariffs could potentially add. It’s Verizon, the plan change is only $1/mo and the device is about $10/mo for 36 months after the $830 credit. What ********.

Not every single economist is saying that for one. And two, many economists told us in 2021 that inflation was temporary and it wasn’t. We’ve never done this before as a country and going out and buying things because you think the prices might go up is just dumb in my opinion.
there is a difference between inflation and a tariff increase
With inflation that means it goes up & down meaning it fluctuates.
With a tariff increase that is set so for example a Canadian governor has just increased tariffs on electricity that they outsource to 3 Americans states and as a consequence of that Americans will be paying an extra $100 dollars a month because of it. This is going to happen as a consequence with every American company that use other countries for their products
Now either you accept that example then that’s up to you

Talk to Regan and his Maquiladora strategy on that topic. He started this. I too am an MBA. That and a Metro Card will get me on the NYC subway.

What exactly does “trade equally” mean? What is your measure of equality.. the fiat currency of one of the traders? In Eco 101, you’re taught the reason behind trade is if someone can produce more of X and you can produce more of Y.. you trade with them. NAFTA killed domestic manufacturing and it doesn’t spin up on a dime.. it takes at least a year to get a plant operational. So what is equal if you want to stop a company from stripping you of natural resources and moving on? I firmly believe every country should have a domestic manufacturing base with protectionism in key areas that are essential to the country… such as food, transportation, building etc. I don’t believe a iPhone falls into that category. If you’re concerned about that, talk to the multinationals that move to the cheapest source of labor. Not a leftist BTW… a centrist conservative that sees beyond what I’m being told by a man that is a known confidence peddler (and a convicted felon).

He's using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act the give him powers to have tariffs, tell me what country USA is at war with right now or what the emergency is.

This. 43% tariff will probably only mean $200 more on a pro max
That’s enough to make me move early. Remember, it’s not Apple alone taking the hit… it’s the carriers as well. Many people have financing through their carrier.

Rushing to buy something you can live without because the price is going to go up is a fool's game. And it's just the dance the people who called the tune want you to dance to. That way, the (short term) surge in sales will give them some good news to justify their terrible economic policies!
Oh, really? I bought a new car in advance of the tariffs and saved at least $6000. Why would I want to pay $6000 more for the exact same thing?

i cannot justify upgrading my 12 pro max to a 16 pro max. I prefer to pay the hefty price of a 17 pro max & hang on to it for another 5 years.

I however cannot say i will be getting a iPhone fold anytime soon, i would hate to see the price tag on that one.
See, I couldn’t do that. I just upgraded my 13 Pro Max to a 16 Pro Max because of a trade in incentive from Verizon after reading what the percentages might be. I didn’t want the 16 Pro Max, I wanted to wait until the 17 to even see if I wanted to upgrade. My current phone is only losing trade in value if I wait (I just finished paying it off) and there is no way I can justify a $1700 phone.

Eh, can just keep using my 14 Pro for a bit longer. It works very well, and there isn’t anything I need from the newer models.
Same here. Plus, I'm really hoping they bring back the purple color option again. I'm also glad that mine doesn't support Apple Intelligence so I don't have to wonder if Apple is going to try to force it on me in the next update. My iPad is a different story.

I was hoping to find some advice and instead I found a lot of political debate. I swore I was to do the one year interest free financing on the phone with the Apple Card but then I’m walking from the exaggerated trade in incentive. I could just keep the 13 Pro Max but its trade in value is declining and the promotion is only good on the 16’s.
