Did you see the 1996 video where Nancy Pelosi attacked China's tariffs on the United States?

Did you know Barack Obama imposed tariffs on Chinese tires in 2009?

Why did Joe Biden keep the Trump tariffs during his administration?

This is not a Democrat or Republican issue. At least, it wasn't until Trump got re-elected.

There are tariffs on China and then there are tariffs of at least 10% on the whole world. Additional tariffs based on a made up formula that produces a fake number that's said to be the percentage other countries tariff our goods at.

Same here. Plus, I'm really hoping they bring back the purple color option again. I'm also glad that mine doesn't support Apple Intelligence so I don't have to wonder if Apple is going to try to force it on me in the next update. My iPad is a different story.
I’m avoiding Apple Intelligence. I have a simple litmus test for these models and most of them fail. If you get a referral to a doctor, they usually put it within a certain radius in miles. I live on Long Island and I constantly get results from Connecticut.. on the other side of Long Island Sound. To drive would mean a trip through NYC or a $160 ferry round trip. When someone actually figures out mileage but takes geographical features into account.. I’ll start to believe AI has some usage besides correcting grammar and summarizing web pages.

I got exactly what I expected out of Biden, not much. He was a 1 turner and he knew it. He passed the infrastructure bill. The problem with your “fake” number is that it’s not objective .. it’s based on our currency. Watch as international currency goes to a Yuan basis as America alienates more and more countries and the game will really be over.

There have always been tit for tat small tariffs. Trump just took it to an extreme and unheard of level. Know your history, lookup the Smooth-Hawley tariffs that plunged us deep into The Great Depression in 1930. This is far more reaching than those tariffs. This is bad for everyone, no matter who you are, globally. Everyone from farmers to tech bros will feel this pain.

I have a suspicion that Apple are going to try and raise prices world wide to absorb losses made in the US.
Then when the tariffs are gone, those prices will remain the new bottom line for incremental price increases going forward. That way, over time, Apple can recoup some of the losses made in the first few months.
Pretty sure Cook is already working his Numbers sheet 😅

I don’t know how anyone in here’s local return policies work, but I would recommend getting an iPhone now if you’re in the market for one now or when iPhones 17 or 18 drop. Or really any product that might see tariff induced price increases, like all consumer electronics:

I think we’ll know exactly where the tariffs will take us within a few weeks or a month at most and then you can return it if this all blows over, or if the administration postpones like we’ve already seen them do.

I hope all of you can prepare for this, and hope that as few of us are hit as little by this as possible (yes, also those who incorrectly think tariffs will make us, as individuals, wealthier).

We are all in the same boat and I hope for the best for all of us.

I’m a purple man, myself! That would *almost* make me want to upgrade! lol

How does this work in other countries that are not the US. Lets say an Australian buying an iPhone. Made in China but designed in Tariff land. Apple has NEVER been kind to Australia. I guess we will be paying tariff prices as if it was brought in the heartland of US itself.

They will have to unless they think consumers will abide a ~30% increase in the price of their phone for no good reason other than Apple wants to continue building them in China.
How much extra do you think it will cost to build them in the US?

Tariffs are just import taxes. You pay them based on where goods physically originate from, not where they're designed.

That makes no sense.. and I’m not implying anything about your statement… it’s just a general question. Apple already has an HQ in Ireland as a tax haven. Yeah, I know about the EU fine. Do the products destined for other countries ever enter the US? If not, how are they subject to US tariff? For Americans, yes I can see it. For other countries?

I think you misread what I said. I was saying that if you're in another country, you won't be paying US tariffs.

Also to be clear, tariffs (import taxes) are also a whole separate thing from corporate taxes etc.

Will we be seeing cigarette boats crossing from Latin America stacked with MacBooks?

That’s another thing I never understood. Get a purple case. 😇 I’ve never understood people that don’t buy cases and screen protectors. Damn, I have lens protectors on my phone too. I mean, to each their own.. but we’re talking close to a grand here.

They ship directly from Asia to Europe. Wishful thinking with the weakening $US products could even become cheaper when apple adjusts prices to the currency.

It should. It won’t but it should. I still can’t get over the idea of the Yuan replacing the US $ as the benchmark currency.

How about keeping your existing tech a bit longer? It’s the only way you’ll win.
There is a point for everybody where they want or need to upgrade.
If you need to upgrade, like I did last year from a broken 11 Pro, the time would be now, before retail and used prices hike up. Sometimes you shouldn’t wait longer because that will only mean a worse experience for longer AND a higher price later.
