you win some, you lose some, and some get rained out...

Apple is a good company, but you win some, you lose some, and some get rained out. This version of the iPad is a loss... Considering all the missing features on the iPad, I cannot think of a reason to buy it...unless you do not own an iPhone or iPod Touch.

I cannot believe I am saying this, but I was more impressed with the Lenovo U1.

Original poster needs to work on his reading comprehension.

The Tech Specs page clearly indicates that the models with 3G will have Assisted GPS, the same that is found in the iPhone.

Let's just SAY for the sake of argument, that this device would make a great, large screen GPS unit. Here's the problem: you CAN'T leave it in the car in the summer, due to interior car temps (not to mention it would be a tempting target to thieves, if visible or they already know you own one), so you have to TAKE IT WITH YOU. Are you REALLY going to tote that thing around, which DOESN'T FIT INTO A POCKET? "No, really, are you going to?" (like that insufferable ad on TV. LOL! )

I think this device can be very successful as a casual web browsing/game playing/music listening device that you use when sitting on your couch. Those are the things I use my netbook for.

Yes, we need more couch potatoes, seeing as the epidemic of obesity hasn't quite touched 100% of the population yet...

After reading the original post, I think the iPad is going to flop big time. I saw someone say it before and it's worth repeating. It has all the restrictions of the iPhone with less portability and lacks the flexibility of the laptop. Does anyone just think it's a larger version of the iPhone that can't make calls or is that just me?

I think the LOL is on you. Sitting right next to me is a bag that I carry around with me everywhere, expressly so that I can have my camera on hand. And the iPad would fit perfectly.

Even the Nexus One has more ram(512MB) than iPad, and it also got a 1GHz CPU.

Even Lenovo Ideapad U1 is better than this.

At the risk of being a Fan Boy, do you think anyone cares? Apple doesn't sell to people who look at tech specs. Frankly, the iPad has no effective competition right now - it is in a niche all by itself. It might be lonely and poor in that niche, but it isn't going head-to-head with full-featured laptops.

Look, people are shelling out $259 for a Kindle that does one thing (and does it well). The iPad does several things well and does several other things adequately - in color for $499+. I think it sells as a replacement for the laptop that a lot of people have around the house for browsing and e-mailing on the couch.

You crack me up! What percentage of the male population walks around town with a freaking BAG?? Get real!

Could be a fantastic device when someone figures out how to jailbreak it, just like the original iPhone.

I see how this could be useful to some people, but for the average consumer, I doubt it. Especially without flash. Its size is cumbersome. Where can it go that a macbook cant? What can it do that a macbook or iPhone cant?

you're very passionate about your opinion which i think is dead wrong. the ipad isn't a gadget that you're supposed to fit in your pocket...where did you get that assumption in the first place. men with things to do carry bags.
if i were going to the gym, i would carry a bag. i use a backpack for school that i carry my macbook in. if i had an ipad, i would put it in my backpack rather than look like a douche and have it sticking out of my jean waistline.

Bigger than an iPhone, smaller and cheaper than a MacBook. I already have an iMac and another desktop. I have an iPhone. I like having a computer to sit on my lap. But they're too big. An iPad isn't...

I'll probably get v2, but I see the market for it. And I don't see any competition there.

Yes, that is a GREAT idea from lenovo, but its just a concept like the hundreds that get built for CES every year that companies don't have the balls to actually produce.

I'll take a soon to be available product over vaporware any day.

The Lenovo isn't Vaporware, it will be out in six - nine months. If you look at the video, the tablet isn't all that snappy. I bet Windows7 isn't either. It's a decent product, but Apple beats it. Why? Not for the usual reason (although the Apple is snappier), but a different one - iPad is $499. The U1 is "about $1000."

Apple has those guys beat hands down. Plus, Apple is first to market.

agree with everything you said. as an iphone user, i want something as convenient as the iphone that i can leave unplugged around the house and pick up whenever to get instant access to the internet or read some text/emails. let's hope the ipad doesn't burn flesh if you leave it on your lap like macbooks do (exaggerated but it does get uncomfortably hot).

Source for the ideapad timeline? I must be remembering a different product that engadget was complaining wasn't coming to market.

I can't take credit for this line, but Apple creates products that are very innovative, but miss a few essential features and are pricey. Yet we buy them.

This product is missing a few features, but not too many. Plenty to add for an iPad 2. Bear in mind that some of the missing features (camera, iChat) might be because the cellular infrastructure doesn't exist to support the expected use at this time. I'm sure there was a deal cut with AT&T and AT&T told Apple what they could go for with cheap 3G unlimited - and it wasn't video conferencing.

Too bad they didn't put a phone in it - especially via Bluetooth. I'm sure a VOIP program will show up soon.

Apple has a good product. It isn't ideal. I'm sure the engineers at Apple are trying to come up with a fairly priced version that does most of what is on the above list.

For a lot of people, this is a nice "computer" to have around the house. It isn't too small like the iPod Touch or too big and expensive like a laptop. The netbook form factor fits nicely in a backpack for travel. This is smaller (so therefore better). It does what I want on the road - web, email, movies, music, and games. At $499 (or $630 for the lowest 3G) these will sell well. And then all the apps will start flowing...

They cut down the features by purpose for this revision one iPad. The idea is to update it yearly with more hardware, so people have to buy a new one every year to get the basic hardware that should have been in from the beginning.

It's just the normal Apple procedure. Wait 3 years, and it might have barely enough stuff to make it worth buying. But there will be enough fans out there to get this device going, I am sure of it, sadly.

One thing I was excited about, was that I heard a rumor of an apple patent for a tacticle keyboard, where the keys would actually rise above the screen. When I heard about that I could hardly believe it. But then I thought about the apple company in general and some of the devices they have come out with like the iPhone. I watched a video from the apple website, and when they came to the keyboard they just said that it automatically slides into place and that it is almost as big as a laptops. And I thought, I was expecting the screen to be about ten inches, and I thought that I would hope the keyboard would be big. And it seemed like this was one of apples selling points? I actually got mad later, it seems like a giant iPod touch? Just my opinion but I was hoping for something like a mac is x computer, with a multi touch interface.

You not heard of a manbag before Dave? :D:D

Of course I've heard of them.

Let me reiterate, real slowly, so I won't be misunderstood this time:

HOW.......... MANY........... GUYS ............. WALK ............. AROUND ........... WITH............. A............ BAG?? Look around you. Count them, and get back to me.

I was on the fence about this before the release and am even moreso now, but the people who are upset about it are so stupid, ill informed and unable to create coherent arguments that I end up defending something I am not even going to necessarily buy.

FML.
