Is the iPad Overpriced and Underspecced? What should it have...

I knew it would be bad, but even I am dumbfounded at the utter uselessness of this product. As I said before the announcement, hack a netbook and be done with it. PM me if you need some pointers on how to go about it. It's the only way to solidly fill the hole between the Macbooks and iPhone that the iPad certainly does not.

netbooks suck.

This doesn't seem to suck.

Why would you just take something that sucks and use that when you could get something better?

I actually don't mind the iPhone OS on this device, I was hoping for full OS X but now realize I don't really need it. I love the look, OS, most of the features, and the pricing (for the most part). However no multitasking on a device that can cost $800+ is ridiculous. No flash I could get over, no camera the same thing. No multitasking is something that is very hard to look past on this device. Especially with the new iWork apps (I personally think they look amazing). I like most of what Apple showed but it always seems that there is something missing with their products recently. Most of the time I could get over it because it was not a deal breaker for me. No multitasking may be a deal breaker this time. I hope that OS 4.0 gets multitasking or Rev B gets it.

You sound like Steve Jobs. Just WHAT about a netbook "sucks"?? I love my little netbook, despite it not doing smooth video playback. Newer ones do better on that score. Besides, it's got a REAL keyboard, and a REAL OS--not a phone OS.

The name.

iPad?
C'mon...MadTV came up with that idea over 4 years ago!

Before the tablet even came out I remember telling myself, "This thing is going to be amazing, but if it doesn't run OS X then there's no point to it and it won't be amazing at all. But why the hell would apple do something like that? They aren't idiots."

...lol

Everything about them sucks. They are shrunk down laptops and act like shrunk down laptops.

I have two of them, and there is nothing to love about them, including stuttering video playback.

Netbooks don't have a real keyboard, they have a shrunken keyboard.

They have an os designed for a full size computer, not a mobile/portable device.

Simply not enough for the Hard Core users; ones with significant music, movie, picture libraries. Not loving to have to purchase yet another rate plan, not sure if I would. The disappointment for me is not enough space to carry *everything* . A 10.7" diagonal screen in that same form would look much more appealing. A camera would have been a real cool experience at that size frame. No multi-tasking either :(

iBooks, well this is no surprise, its all about selling content now; Steve wants to try and finally start making money on selling content. iPad is a very cool, low entry cost option to mutli forms of content all in one simple interface and location. The ebook reader looks real cool, with still and video content amongst the text. I say all the mid to large format e-readers will be swallowed up by the iPad. Not sure how the Kindle, Que or Skiff can survive given what is offered by the iPad. If I get it I'll probably get the $499 model and use it to carry movies and the ebook reader for newspapers, books, mags...etc. I've been in the market for an ebook reader for about a year, I can't see myself going in any other direction.

What a smart creature.

I've been reading stuff on my LCD for many years, every day on ave 4-8hrs a day. I didn't realise LCDs are poor for reading. It looks good to me.

It looks good, but it's supposed to be bad for your eyes.
I stare at one all day too and after a while you can really feel the strain.

Or you might just be lucky because you have eyes touched by the gods :D

Lack of a DVD/ cd drive does it for me. Was hoping to be able to watch my collection of movies and tv shows on it.

PLUS: what's with apple creating proprietry adapters for things that come standard on all other equivilant products. I'm talking 'bout the lack of at least one USB connector. Instead, you must buy an overpriced adaptor for standard features. The same with the MacBooks mini display port- which replaced the mini dvi, which replaced VGA adaptor.

With all that dislike, I will say it still lookz like an Awesome product!

My 10 reasons why I will NOT buy an Apple iPad:

10 reasons why I will NOT buy an Apple iPad:

1. It is not what I expected from an Apple tablet.
2. Screen resolution. It only does 1024x768 (the same as an iBook G4!, no native 720p, that means all those HD videos from the Apple store won't play back at full resolution).
3. Screen is not 16:9 (widescreen).
4. No direct way to connect an external hard drive or USB thumb drive.
5. Apple's A4 1Ghz processor is still untested for everyday life use.
6. Sofware bugs usually present in new solfware.
7. No camera (it would be nice to use iChat on this machine).
8. $170 US dollars for 3G (also, 4G is just around the corner).
9. No FLASH support.
10. With the ammount of content I have in my iTunes library, I'll be needing more that 16, 32 or 64GB of storage space (80 to 120gb should do it. But then again, they are using flash drives).

Of course I did not expected an computer type tablet from Apple but who are kidding here. This thing is just an over sized iPod Touch. Who is their target market, elderly people with poor eye sight?.
While I don't want another laptop computer, I do want some computer-like features. Like the ability to transfer and load documents. I guess my iPhone will do for now.

USBThis means you can not connect a camera to download photos while on vacation. This means, you still have to take a laptop. And if you need a laptop, why would you take an iPad as well?

Apparently there is a connector to connect your camera to and also an connector for SD. It's called the Camera Connection Kit to do just that.
http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/reviews/entry/apple-ipad-camera-connection-kit/

3) A front facing video cam/camera - come on... this is an obvious feature for the iPad - video conferencing (iChat), facial recognition, etc. I can't believe they left this out.

4) SD card slot. Apple has them on the iMacs. Give us one way to get things on/off and, give us a way to increase storage as it gets cheaper - SD is obvious. At the rate SSD prices are going down, don't lock us in to the tiny storage that is affordable today (64GB is puny for a media device). An SD slot could be used to expand storage as it becomes cheaper. Btw, the camera adapters are a JOKE.

6) GPS. How is this missing? Like the front facing camera and an SD slot - I suspect cost/price impact. So many apps use location services... this cripples the device.

#3 I was hoping for that too. :(

#4 As mentioned above, there will be an accessory called Camera Connection Kit.

#6 It has just like the iPhone 3G/3GS

This is the first apple product that I really got into. I.e. reading all of the hype and then waiting for the keynote and the "one more thing" surprise. And my god, was I dissapointed.

NONE of the features I was looking forward to made it into this. I actually got bored during the keynote and browsed MR. If you need an example of how underwhelming this thing is, just look at the keynote. 90% of it was just a tour of iphone applications. Really? All you bring to the table is the ability to watch videos, or photos, or *gasp* go through the address book?

BUT OMG ITS ON A BIG SCREEN!

Oh, and the best part was the ability to read web pages. Steve spent for friggin ever looking at websites, as if this is unheard of "Wow, look how the NYT has pictures!" The best part was how he kept trying to scroll past those pesky boxes with ? in them because it cant render freaking flash.

I can barely stand how crippled Apple makes the iphone. Im not going to buy a faux-computer I need to jailbreak too, just to get its actual potential out. I deal with how tyranical apple is with the App Store and how it cripples stuff (no lockscreen usefulness, no multi tasking, etc) because it does everything else well and I can carry it where ever. There is no way I will put up with the same problems for a device that is nearly the cost of a macbook (if I want a decent ammount of memory for all those movies) and is not nearly as portable (or useful for that matter)

Personally I was expecting this tablet to solve world hunger and cure cancer at the same time. Multitasking right?

Right?

I don't like how it's basically a full features computer, without a lot of full features, like USB or the ability to be used without another computer.

No camera for video chat + no stylus to take notes (draw pictures in class) and no flash for hulu. If it had these 3 things, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

oh u cant draw pictures in class? maybe you will actually do your work, get a $1 notepad if u want to doodle...

IMO styluses are a useless accessory of the past, i prefer keyboards 10000% more than stylus, writing with a pencil is tiring on my hands, I can do probably 8x if not more note taking with a keyboard than a pencil.

edit: i just read like 2 pages back and wow, i dont need any of the stuff people are listing..

USB = who cares

camera = my phone? it has a 30-pin converter too if u need that

flash = im done with flash forever

multi-tasking = click on internet, click on Pages, click on internet, i cant read more than one at a time unless the screen is like 29"... god do you seriously need a pad like object to multitask

cant take notes = it has a freaking keyboard, the evolution from the stylus, a literally cave-man tool (the finger or a bone), i prefer keyboards as well...

It has all the apps i could need, and guess what bro, i wouldnt use this thing as a personal map or something.. its a table-like device... plus someone might just snatch it of your hand while you search for god knows what with something that bulky.. where do you people live, starbucksland?

I wouldnt use this on a vacation, its for on the go, not for travel..

the more i read what people say i realize they are totally clueless, just read the original iPod release thread, 3rd post is some guy saying enough toys fix some dumb server thing.. people here live in starbucksland all day or something seriously

I hate when I have to "doodle" graphs and equations in math class.

Believe it or not, some classes require things other than text input.

everyone is harping on the lack of 16:9 support, but i think they chose the standard screen for practical reasons. To view website in portrait mode a 16:9 screen would have to be pretty large to make a site legible

im pretty sure the software includes graphs and math functions.. no more chickenscratch equations!

not to mention u can get color graphs, accurate pie-charts.. ur 16 peice highlighter set cant compete...

I don't know why artists don't just use numbers too. They really need to get on the bandwagon.

My point was that not all things that are drawn for/in class can be done without being hand-drawn.

You might want to stay away from personal insults. I'll ignore it this one time.

I'll give you an example of what I mean. In my Operating Systems class in Computer Science, the teacher does not hand out the notes and so we actually have to notes in class. Sometimes, there are diagrams that show the architecture (like Von Neumann architecture) which we are required to copy down as fast as possible since as soon as he lectures about it, he switches to the next slide. This is the "diagram" that I was talking about which can only be drawn that fast with a basic pen and paper (and since device is supposed to replace that I need it to do just that).

If you can copy that down using iWork and a keyboard then guess what you must either be inhuman or just simply outstanding at that stuff; which unfortunately I am neither.

So why don't you get your head out of El Steve-O's butt and actually try to understand what other people are saying without being reduced to personal insults.

Exactly. Even tablets from way back in 2001 had the ability for you to write down notes in class and have onboard handwriting software to convert them into text.

It's a much much faster and more comfortable to take down notes than by writing on an onscreen keyboard.

By leaving out the stylus and handwriting recognition, Steve Jobs just said a big F U to all the students that were considering this thing.

Both the iPod and the iPhone were actual significant leaps forward when they first came out. Everyone else followed them.

And this is why I bought both devices early on, and the reason why I, like everyone else, had high hopes that this device would do something innovative, or offer something new of value.

This thing however is like taking 3 steps back. There is so much this can't do that even the iPhone that's a fifth it's size can do, and there is nothing it can do that the iPhone can't.

Apple started the presentation by saying that for a Tablet to succeed, it has to some things better than both the iPhone 3GS and a Macbook Pro do.

Then he unveiled a product that utterly fails this test. There is nothing it does better than either device.
