I don't see a need for it, as I have my iPhone wherever I might go.

I mean, the Wi-Fi N is nice, but not a dealbreaker.

If it had multitasking, then I think I might actually have to give it a thought...

I was on the fence about this before the release and am even moreso now, but the people who are upset about it are so stupid, ill informed and unable to create coherent arguments that I end up defending something I am not even going to necessarily buy.

FML.

Speak for yourself, bucko, unless you meant the stupid ones are those who defend the indefensible--if so, I've got your back. Lol!

Of course I've heard of them.

Let me reiterate, real slowly, so I won't be misunderstood this time:

HOW.......... MANY........... GUYS ............. WALK ............. AROUND ........... WITH............. A............ BAG?? Look around you. Count them, and get back to me.

i'm pretty sure you're a troll. and you don't have a wife. and you're a teenager. and you don't have money to buy an iPad anyways.

You are the epitome of a clueless twit. I've been happily married to my lovely wife for almost a decade. Wise up moron--I've got enough money to buy numerous iPads, but I don't WANT one! I've got 11 iPods because I LIKE THEM. I don't have any DESIRE for this latest bastardized product Jobs cooked up.

USB

It fails because it has no USB. It can not replace a computer in any way because there is no USB in it. This means you can not connect a camera to download photos while on vacation. This means, you still have to take a laptop. And if you need a laptop, why would you take an iPad as well?

So it's not good for vacation. It's not good for note taking. It's not good for production. It's not good for just about anything besides "armchair computing". Do you think there's a market for $500 - $800 armchair computers, where a netbook/iPod touch/iPhone/other tablet would work just as well?

Okay fine. But you're still obnoxious like a troll :). I'm not trying to judge your character but your screaming (caps) about men with bags. I live in NYC and there are tons of men (businessmen/students/normal people) who carry bags in a non feminine manner..

Well I think he means to say how many men do you see carrying a bag everywhere they would normally carry their phone?

I didn't read this whole thread so I'm probably repeating others but here are my biggest problems with the ipad:

#1 size: its' just a little too big to be a really portable device that can be used where my laptop can't. I would have preferred something around the size of a kindle (7" screen). I can't really imagine a whole bunch of self-conscious people pulling out this enormous thing on a bus or the train for casual browsing on the way to work. It's just a little too big.

#2 text input: I really don't understand how apple engineers couldn't understand how critical this would be even for a device that is geared more towards consumption than creation. This device basically requires you to set it down or more ideally be sitting down with it on your lap to input text...which kind of defeats the point of a tablet...

But I am willing to wait for apple to improve on these. If this thing takes off I can see them coming out with a smaller version (like the ipod nano version of ipods) and the text input issue is a software issue so it could be solved even faster.

I like the price, and the 3G terms, and as someone without a smartphone I am somewhat tempted by this but I think I'll wait for a few revisions

Main things

No USB
No Snow Leopard

At least one USB port would have been just as good. And I know it's a big demand but no superdrive. I know it would be impossible to jam one in there but a usb port could have a superdrive plugged in. I mean...come on.

talk about putting the cart before the horse! This project is BASS-ACKWARDS!

Why was the iphone special? Because it brought a computer/phone to my POCKET. It wasn't that it had more features than a laptop (other than phone), it was that those features were truly useful/portable.
Here we have none of that-- no more portability than a laptop, no more phone, you need an accessory for a keyboard, which a macbook already has bundled neatly in, you need an accessory for a camera which a macbook has, etc.

We like an iphone not because iphone os is BETTER than osx, but because that's all that could fit in a small device. Now we just have a clunky, severely crippled device that can do less than an iphone can, and WAY less than a macbook. I can't even skype with the damn thing!

Seriously, how could it have *POSSIBLY* taken SOOO long for someone to just hook up a bigger screen to an iphone? Where's the development? Where's the research? There's nothing new here, and certainly nothing groundbreaking... It's just a dumbed down iphone with none of the iphone advantages. Years and years and years working on this? Get real...
Couldn't: have said it better. I mean what were they thinking:
Lets take a phone and put a big screen on it and then but then wait...that's too much. Lets just remove the phone capabilities and the camera and the gps and lets sell it and make money. But wait mister Jobs.. not many people will be that stupid to buy it. Oh you don't worry because it has a apple logo on the back.

IMO, Apple could have saved themselves the trouble and just made a 9.7-inch Mulitouch screen attachment/accessory that works with iPhone/iTouch. Could have made it so you can attach your iPhone/iTouch on the back and would also have allow it's battery to double or triple the juice of the iPhone/iTouch. For about $150-$200.

Apple would've/should've/could've just re-vamped into the NetBook industry. I'd seriously settle for a $499 NetBook made by Apple that had just about the same features + an iSight Camera + portability.

No USB.

No Flash payback.

Lame processor.

Tiny HDD. In 2010 they really come out with a device that only has 16 Gb storage space. (And the maximum size of 64 Gb for over $800 is a joke).

I was expecting a tablet COMPUTER. What Apple presented was a giant iPhone for Shrek.

I'd say this thing is freak product, developed from some hubris infected marketing department. I could imagine that if Apple can sell lots of this rubbish, they make a superb profit.

A tablet computer has to run OS X. Other than that, don't bother.

If it were a stripped down version of Leopard, possibly. As a "beefy" iPhone OS, definitely not. It's too big to be the "always with you, pull it out of your pocket" device like the iPhone/Touch, and lacks the interface to sit down and use it for extensive amounts of productive use. Nor does it have the right screen technology or battery life to be a good eReader. It's in no man's land for me. Kind of like the very first multifunction devices from HP, Espon, & others. Sure it can serve multiple functions but it sucks at all of them.

I think it is a fantastic device, I want one.. I'll take it almost everywhere, I won't need an iPod Touch anymore. I'll still need my iPony (iPhone) though.

I can imagine myself using this when I travel and on vacation (I won't need to take a laptop), if I need to take a lot of notes in a class or something.
It looks absolutely fantastic with it's dock, I can imagine myself right now, Apple wireless keyboard sync'd to my iPad in it's dock...

One thing I find kind of funny, is how people say this is the first version of ipad, that it could eventually have a camera etc. What was the first iPhone like? I didn't own one I bought a 3g, but I wonder what can you compare the first iPhone to, another phone? I think the iPhone wasn't like anything else, multi touch, ability to surf the web, flick through pages of apps etc. What can you compare the ipad to, a giant iPod touch.

I'm not too disappointed with this device. For the price it's decent.

I'm not getting one because it doesn't meet my requirements and I'm willing to spend 3x the amount on a tablet PC that meets my needs. In two years when I'm in the market for a replacement, I'll wait for the iPad 3gs and I suspect it'll be FAR more appealing to me then.

My basic requirements are:

-Stylus and powerful note taking software.
-Tether device to my dSLR so I can see pics as I snap them in the field (I don't need it for photo editing of course)
-Multitasking
-Flash support (come on, these devices were made for sites like hulu! Maybe in 2 years flash won't be such a big deal.)
-E reader functionality that let's me take notes on the book/document with the stylus. Frankly, I don't see how they'll be able to sell this as an educational device without this function.

I suspect the iPad will have much of this within 2 years, probably less. I think the form factor is the future of mobile computing. It's not there for me yet though.

Not garbage... a lot of potential. Wait.

I've been screwed too many times on 1st gen Apple products. I've basically paid to "beta test" the newest Apple device only to find the 2nd gen fixes the majority of the problems for far less money.

That being said, I love this idea but....

...i'll wait for:

1) Flash support within the browser (yes, flash sucks, but it's necessary today)

2) Real apps - not iPhone apps that have been up-rez'd. Wait 6 months - there will be plenty of iPad-tuned applications.

3) A front facing video cam/camera - come on... this is an obvious feature for the iPad - video conferencing (iChat), facial recognition, etc. I can't believe they left this out.

4) SD card slot. Apple has them on the iMacs. Give us one way to get things on/off and, give us a way to increase storage as it gets cheaper - SD is obvious. At the rate SSD prices are going down, don't lock us in to the tiny storage that is affordable today (64GB is puny for a media device). An SD slot could be used to expand storage as it becomes cheaper. Btw, the camera adapters are a JOKE.

5) Wireless synch. Let me synch over my wireless network. Better yet, let me synch over the internet. Really? A 32 pin iPod/iPhone tether? That's awful. The idea is that the iPad is wireless... give me a magsafe charger and that's it. See "future possibilities" below - get rid of the wires.

6) GPS. How is this missing? Like the front facing camera and an SD slot - I suspect cost/price impact. So many apps use location services... this cripples the device.

7) Lose the dock/keyboard accessory - the iPad supports bluetooth. Apple sells bluetooth keyboards. The camera accessory and the dock accessory are both so un-Apple-like - so is the cover - since when does Apple make accessories? I remember Palm Pilots having a similar keyboard dock - it was just lame. It feels like Apple is hedging that the on-screen keyboard wont work... let people buy a laptop if they want a real keyboard. Make a good enough synch system and nobody will need a keyboard.

Future possibilities:

1) Wireless displays - Put the iPad down near a larger display/computer monitor. Watch movies, use it as a desktop computer... Use a bluetooth keyboard with it at the same time...use the iPad as a giant trackpad/pointing device.

2) Induction charging - no wires... Palm Pre does it. So does my electric toothbrush. Wireless guys... come on, keep up Apple.

This thing has serious potential. I'll buy it when the potential is realized. I'm done beta testing for Apple.

Meh, I always wondered if there would be any killer feature of an Apple tablet that would make it a "must have" compared to any other tablet that I have found it easy to live with out.

Frankly, don't see it.

I don't think the device is bad, I just think Apple has tried to deliver a better mouse trap. WTH cares?

You have made a good point.

As for now, I don't need this thing.

But it could become something very useful.

I'd like to have a computer that fits into jacket pocket, add a foldable keyboard...

On another thread someone mentioned TRUE GPS. With Gps the iPad could became a true iPal when cruising cities, giving directions instead of an expensive car computer. And you can plug it into the DVD player like an iPod.

So, after the first disappointment, let's see what iPad 2.0 will do.

I knew it would be bad, but even I am dumbfounded at the utter uselessness of this product. As I said before the announcement, hack a netbook and be done with it. PM me if you need some pointers on how to go about it. It's the only way to solidly fill the hole between the Macbooks and iPhone that the iPad certainly does not.

I haven't really decided on my opinion yet, I'll wait until I try one out.

But, did anyone find it really weird that they used a website that had a flash applet in the demo? From what I've read in the various books out there about Steve and his presentations, they are very carefully scripted and rehearsed to make sure they go off without a hitch. Surely he (or others assisting with the keynote) visited that site multiple times before to make sure everything worked great in the demo. It was more than one page with the flash applet problem too.

That just seems extremely odd to me. It seemed like it was done on purpose, and if I saw the keynote live I would have expected a comment on flash later in the keynote. From all the keynotes I've seen it just always seems like everything is significant and happens for a reason. Maybe not this time. Anyone else agree? (I know there's a lot of anger in this thread, please don't call me names if you disagree!)

It seems people were expecting an end-all device that had every feature you could possibly imagine. This thing won't replacing any MacBooks or iPhones, obviously. Nevertheless, I think it's a cool gadget in it's own merit. The price is surprisingly inexpensive. Not bad at all for a first generation iPad.

Despite my slight disappointments, I'm gettin' one ASAP.

-I love macs, but HATE reading text in black on white background. For hardcopy paper as it reflects light, it's the most efficient. For a screen, beaming photons into your eyes, it's the worst. Give Aqua an option for a soft, less harsh skin, and if you want to sell me an e-reader, get a clue and GIVE ME AN OPTION FOR LIGHT TEXT ON DARK BACKGROUND. Dealbreaker, but as it would be SO SIMPLE to give me that option on the iPhone OS, I have hope. There's not a day that I don't fantasize about switching to Linux on my workstation due to this limitation in Aqua. How simple an option it would be for Apple to empower their users by letting them have an interface option on all their products that did this.

-I love my mac pro, and I love a touchscreen interface as it's far superior to a mouse (or even my thumb driven trackball). How about an option to use the iPad as the interface for my very expensive 8-core workstation? Apple and the aftermarket out there have FAILED to give me a modern interface option (short of Cintiq, which I've considered, but it's pricey) for my expensive workstation, and I don't understand why. This would be pretty SIMPLE, so I have hope.

-I love the direction Apple is taking in controlling / delivering home tv and audio, and I believe there are apps which turn the iPhone into a remote controller, so this iPad will make a nice controller / remote for my eventual total home setup. While not exactly simple, the technology already exists, both in hardware and software, so when all this gets integrated, I'll be more interested. But until I'm assured that the iPad will do this, I'm going to hold off on buying one.

-I agree about the limitations of the OS. No multitasking, file transfers, etc? I'll wait. I need a certain level of control, especially if I'm paying hundreds for Gigs of flash storage.

-I love that it has GPS. But I'm not sure I want it sitting in the middle of my car cockpit. Liability on this is tricky, but what I really want is a hardware / software product that I can wire into my car, plug in an iPad, and take the navigation data to a small projector in front of my steering wheel, on top of the dashboard, and project GPS mapping info on the inside of my windshield. Simple light green path info. I don't think this is too far off, but I want it now. And did they say they have a navigation software that talks to you? Kind of madatory, that.

-It's not a phone. I've got a crappy first gen cell phone and have been waiting for the right hardware to upgrade. I take it back, it's not that crappy. It's a working phone, and that's all I need it to do, and it's a lot smaller than an iPhone. Portable. The iPhone always struck me as too big a phone, with too small a screen for video / web, so I never got one. Now, I'd love an iPad, but there's no way I want to have to buy an iPhone as well. What I'd like as a companion to the pad is an iPhone shuffle. Something small, maybe the size of a bluetooth headset (or even better, a sexy black pen), but better looking / better design. On its own, it would work with voice commands or simple buttons, and wouldn't need the iPad to function. I can't believe the market hasn't provided a small sexy phone with no damn screen. Market FAIL. Synced with the iPad, you'd get a whole interface with much more power to control your messaging experience.

-I HATE HATE HATE java and LOVE that Apple and Google are teaming up to make it outdated. Screw Java and the horse it rode in on. HTML5 is going to grow pretty fast, I think. Now they need to work something out where I can use Google Voice. This is also a deal breaker for me to upgrade. I want a virtual number that I keep for life, and can redirect to any other numbers I choose, on the fly. I want a web interface that gives me total control of which calls get routed where and when. I REALLY want to be able to record calls at the press of a button, and to have all my voicemail instantly accessible as computer files. My outgoing messages too. If Apple can't work with a direct competitor, I understand. Just duplicate the service and offer it to me as part of cloud / mobile me / whatever it's called, and I'll consider the $100/yr (which I'm not considering now, especially since it can't even sync my workstation with my macbook).

-I'm not crazy about the proportion of the iPad, or it's screen. There's simply no way that in future versions, it won't be 16x9, and full screen. How big is that border between screen and edge, because it looks like a full inch. No border, and no ugly IMAX square aspect ratio for the iPad dimensions. I understand they're doing it this way to keep costs down, but maybe I'll wait for an aesthetic (and OLED) upgrade.

-I'm seriously considering voice command as a major interface on my workstation. With a companion iPhone shuffle implementing this, you wouldn't have to type on a piece of glass (that's not looking great to me, but as good as Apple is on design, they're bad with ergonomics. Can I have an ergonomic keyboard please? No? Well *&%!@). That would be nice.
