People are rounding down to the common resolutions used for media (480, 720, 1080, etc.). Since the XR doesn't have 1080, the next standard-size resolution is 720. In fact the XR does have an 828 display.

It's a matter of preference. Some people want a point-for-point match with their media and the screen, others don't care so much about it.

Thanks so much for the info, i guess 828p is okay, i am using iphone 8 now which has a resolution 1792-by-750- resolution and i dont see pixels. I was watching a XR reveiw on youtube and saw pixelation of XR is visible, i am sure its because of the camera which they use to record the video on and they wont be visible to our eyes.

I do see the pixels on the 7 & 8, whereas the Plus models are much sharper. However, I'm still considering a XR because I don't think the PPI is that big a deal. The 7 & 8 still look nice, as do iPads.

It is very interesting to compare the point resolution or the viewport of the various smartphones to put this resolution discussion more into perspective. The point resolution is much more relevant than the pixel resolution in my eyes because this is the resolution that the web servers will deliver to the devices. This resolution is responsible for the amount of informations you get from the web server on one page.

Point resolutions:

iPhone XR 414 x 896 (same as iPhone XS Max)
iPhone X and XS 375 x 812
iPhone 8 Plus 414 x 736
iPhone 6-8 375 x 667

Google Pixel 3 XL 412 x 847
Google Pixel 3 412 x 824
Galaxy Note 9 360 x 740
Galaxy S9+ 360 x 740

The iPhone XR (together with the XS Max) has by far the best point resolution of of all smartphones! These much bigger phones like the 3 XL or especially the Note 9 are clearly beaten in this regard....

I was very sceptical about the Xr screen and was thinking of getting a 8+ for that reason. I posponed my purchase because I wanted to see the Xr in person first. Went to the store today and was pleasantly surprised by the screen clarity of the Xr. It's totally acceptable to me. So I ordered a white 128 Gb:D.

That's what I received today. The screen and colors are gorgeous!

Looks perfectly fine to me. I fact I had it next to my Pixel 2 XL before I packaged it up to go to it's new owner and I don't see much of a difference. I'm not a big fan of OLED anyway.

Just walked into an Apple store an hour ago to have a look at the new phones. The XR screen is fine, however, at least to my eyes, there is a very obvious difference when compared to the XS oled displays. I would spend the extra for the better display. YMMV

Yeah, I finally saw the screen in person...it looks much better than I though. The whole resolution thing did scare me weeks ago, but seeing it in person, it looks fine to me.

Actually after comparing my 6s Plus to my XR for 3 hours I find it to be a great upgrade over the 6s Plus. Despite the 6 Plus and 6s Plus having 1080p resolution and 401ppi it still has lower brightness and uses the full sRGB standard display technology.

The fact the XR's LCD is using a wide color True Tone display with enhanced brightness really makes videos look a lot better. The accuracy of the colors on the XR reflects how shows are shown on my big screen.

While the XR isn't an HDR display it is able to play HDR content which gives it some some enhancements to dynamic range, contrast, and wide color gamut similar to the 8/8 Plus. Watching HDR compatible content on XR vs 6s Plus the video quality looks even better. Mobile games look and perform faster as well on XR vs 6s Plus.

My next round of testing will be comparing the XR to my mom's 7 Plus however I've already decided I'm keeping the XR its a substantial improvement over the 6s Plus and so far in my every day use when reading websites, using apps, watching videos and playing games I haven't seen any negatives when compared to my 6s Plus.

The reviewer said that he had rather Apple had put the A11 chip and an OLED screen into the XR instead of the A12 and LCD screen, but isn’t the screen the big cost-cutting move done on the XR? Would an A11 chip instead of an A12 offset the cost of an OLED screen instead of an LCD? I wouldn’t have thought so, but that would have really cannibalized the XS, it seems to me. I would have bought it, but I don’t see what the reviewer said as a viable option.

IMO the OLED's are border line scams. Yes the contrast is amazing, but the resolution is not 458dpi. Its only that for green.

If you have a black background and view red text - the iphone XR looks *better* than it does on the XS or XS max... same for for blue on white - which is staggering considering that this is the color scheme of most of IOS.

I’m very happy with mine so far. I think the best iPhone display I’ve had was with the silver 8 Plus I traded in to get a Max, which of course was returned. I’ve still got a Product Red 8 Plus whose display is a little warmer than that of my Silver 8 Plus. Maybe a little more “sparkly” vs the flatter look of the Silver’s display.

My Xr display shows text to be just a hair bit more grainy. Photos and videos look really nice, though. Overall it’s an all around nice choice for me since it didn’t work out with the Max. I do like the overall look of the display better than my Max’s for reading text. Pictures and videos are of course more detailed and have slightly richer color on a Max. I don’t know about $250-$350 more worth of better. That depends on the customer. I’m willing to compromise on the pic and video attractiveness this small amount in order to get a more pleasant experience of reading text.

I’m sure right next to each other OLED is superior. My problem is I want the Max sized phone and at least 128GB so it’s more like $450 + tax on $450. Is the OLED ~$500 nice, not really. I have an OLED TV and wouldn’t give it up QLED, but a phone, heck yeah.

In the Apple store the XS OLED's weren't placed near the XR phones. I walked back and forth to different tables to see if the screen was noticeably different. To me it was clear as day. My view is that given the phone screen is what you look at more than anything else it's worth it. However, I agree pricing is a huge factor. There is no wrong option.

Haha, what was I thinking. Apple wouldn’t put cheap product next to the premium product :) Actually, 3D Touch is the bigger factor for me.

This is why I like to visit my local Walmart or Best Buy they put all the iPhones beside each other for easy comparison lol

I’d rather they keep the A12 and put a 1080p LCD display in the Xr.
