It's like how they still sell their latest iPad with the A10 chip inside; there's no real reason to upgrade it.

Saying that (and I was going to buy an XR anyway before being swayed by the Max), if they'd upgraded the screen to 1080 and OLED with 3D touch I'd definitely have been interested.

Apple is moving away from 3D Touch, not towards it. It will be gone within the next couple of years.

Shame - I still use it. I wonder what they will replace it with in their watches.

My only current experience is the 2018 iPad my girlfriend uses. Even coming from that to my iPad Pro, I can see a huge difference in the screen. Is that the PPI? Quality? I am hoping that the XR is nothing like those screens. I don't tell her this (cause she doesn't notice), but I think it looks terrible.

iPad 2017/2018 isn't laminated. Pro is. Otherwise it shares the same PPI as the Pro.

Good video. Thanks for posting it.

You know, I had the 8 for exactly a year before I sold it. Not once did I notice that it's screen was worse than any of my friends' plus sized models. But its size, 4.7" was beginning to piss me off. Replying to threads on forums or any other type of keyboard input was becoming harder, partially due to my eyesight.
No offense intended, but “...[your] eyesight” somewhat lessens the impact of your input on this topic.

Here’s some numbers

XR:
828×1792×RGB
= 4451328 subpixels

XS Max:
621×1344 (red)
1242×2688 (green)
621×1344 (blue)
= 5007744 subpixels

There is a difference but not as big as some people make it out to be.

I beg to differ. There is a huge difference because of Sub-Pixel rendering. These displays appear much more sharp than they really are. When I analyze text as close as I can get, the X appears sharper than the 400 PPI 8 Plus. Much less 326 PPI with the XR.

I would rather have an 8 or 8 Plus over the XR because of the 16:9 aspect ratio. With 19.5:9 aspect ratio, 99% of the time your content will be letter boxed and the LCD backlight comes though to reduce contrast and make the overall image worse. That’s the beauty of OLED’s with this aspect ratio.

Like Garbage??? No absolutely not lol. It's not going to be as high resolution as other Apple devices, but it's not some piece of crap display that it's made out to be

It's not even out yet!

Where does this diatribe come from

It comes from people who truly believe they need to drive a Mercedes to go to Walmart or an 8k TV to watch reruns of The Golden Girls. I still watch at my 6s display and I have absolutely no problems reading the words on News app. First this thinking made me laugh, then made me upset, now it makes me angry. I thought it was trolling but I've met people who think that way.

Yeap, I still don’t know why Sony launched a 4K phone, but there you go, waste of time.

Yep. There are people here who admittedly bought the 512 gig Max not because they needed the space but because it was the most expensive one. I found that a bit disgusting after I realized they were serious and also clueless to the fact that no one would even know. It's like burning money just because you can.

I personally don't allow other people's buying decisions to influence the way I feel.

I actually find the 64 GB model to be more of a waste of money out of the 3. After spending so much, it's a bigger gamble. Many end up using more storage than they end up realizing. Some people though won't ever fill that model up though (as indicated from threads here). I know I can safely go with the 256, but everyone has different storage needs.

This had nothing to do with storage needs. They literally bought it because it cost the most money. The price was the reason for purchase. That's called living in a fantasy world where material possessions are tied to a sense of self worth.

This is so wrong, I do not even know where to start...

Saying that you are noticing pixels at 326 PPI on 4.8 inch display is BS. Sorry but it is... Fonts are gonna look same on 326 PPI and 526 PPI, unless you are looking at it via magnifying glass, or you are hawk or eagle or something.

But since you are a human (I assume)...

...any further conversation is pointless.

Your comment is basically saying: “I don’t notice this problem so therefore you are wrong”.

Sorry, but that is an ignorant statement to make. I can easily notice a difference when looking at text between the Plus and the 4.7” iPhone. It is noticably sharper on the Plus with the 4.7” looking grainy in comparison. Someone pointed out that many people won’t notice a difference at all because they have 20/20 vision, you are probably one of those people. To completely dismiss someone for noticing and then saying “no, you are wrong because I don’t notice a difference” though is just blatant ignorance.

It amazes me how prevalent this attitude is here; well said.

It’s one of the things I dislike about these forums.

“What issues? I’m not noticing any issues, this thread is pointless. There is obviously something wrong with OP’s eyesight, he probably ought to get them checked as I can’t see any difference at all. Any further discussion about this is pointless as the fault clearly lies with OP. If you don’t like it then tough, move over to Android /thread”.

^ I got angry at myself just typing that. It’s a horrible attitude that I’ve always disliked about Apple users here.

It’s funny as some comments on here are the same style and ideology but the other way round, where if you can’t see a difference then their is something wrong with your eyesight..
Door swings both ways with that one.

Then what's the "discussion" worth keeping the thread open for then? If people have deemed it "garbage" before the device is even out to see in person, keep your wallet closed and don't buy it; end of discussion really as there is no convincing the naysayers before even seeing it anyway.

But so if one person can say its garbage, but another says it's not noticeable, then only the latter is telling someone how they should feel? Interesting......

To the topic, the "average phone buyer" simply doesn't care about resolution or being on the "PPI patrol" as Flossy Carter would say. If you're a spec wh*re, well the XR is not meant for you to begin with; thats why the XS and Max exist. The XR meant to replace the iphone 6/7/8 line at the low end of the current model year phone spectrum, not the Plus, and not the high end users who demand top specs.

If 326PPI was "garbage" we would not see 5 of the top 10 phones being used (data taken in Q2 2018) in the US being 326PPI; 34% of smartphone users in the US are ok with 326PPI by the data below.

And last I checked there was somewhere around 235 million smartphone users in the US alone. That is a BOATLOAD of potential XR buyers; 80 million.

Country Position Phone model Share
USA 1 iPhone 7 12.05%
USA 2 iPhone 7 Plus 9.96%
USA 3 iPhone 6S 7.77%
USA 4 iPhone 6 6.22%
USA 5 iPhone 8 Plus 5.68%
USA 6 iPhone X 5.00%
USA 7 iPhone 6S Plus 4.34%
USA 8 iPhone 8 4.04%
USA 9 iPhone SE 3.89%
USA 10 Samsung Galaxy S8 2.96%

You missed my point. I'll be more direct and just simply ask then, since I'm not trying to be rude: how do other people's buying choices affect you or anyone at all? I ask, cause it comes across as judgmental. I brought up the storage argument after because, many people don't even know what they need down the line (some more, some less). Some of those people may very well use their storage down the line.

I used to buy the highest capacity iPhone and iPhone every year, not out of "status", but because I wanted the most Apple offered. I ended up using most of it not even realizing. My decisions though didn't affect anyone else, and no one else could tell how much storage I had on my phone, so I don't quite get that argument anyway.

It's not the buying choice, it's that type of personality/attitude in general that's irritating. I kinda think you missed the point. I'm done derailing this thread. Good night :)
