Here’s some numbers

XR:
828×1792×RGB
= 4451328 subpixels

XS Max:
621×1344 (red)
1242×2688 (green)
621×1344 (blue)
= 5007744 subpixels

There is a difference but not as big as some people make it out to be.

Agreed. This will be a better screen than the iPhone 8, which was already a damn fine screen in its own right. The resolution will be a non issue.

This is so wrong, I do not even know where to start...

Saying that you are noticing pixels at 326 PPI on 4.8 inch display is BS. Sorry but it is... Fonts are gonna look same on 326 PPI and 526 PPI, unless you are looking at it via magnifying glass, or you are hawk or eagle or something.

But since you are a human (I assume)...

...any further conversation is pointless.

He never said that. He said text was sharper on the higher PPI device which it is...simple laws of physics.

Also your method of arguing is quite...interesting.

Are people even reading my original post? I never had the 6/7/8.

I had the 6s Plus...which looks better than the 8.

Try a side by side Google Search on the 8 and 8 Plus in Safari...if you can’t see the blurred text on the 8 you must be blind.

I understand the OLED iPhones are going to look better, but I’m saying the Plus Sized phones also look better (than the 6/7/8 and supposedly XR with the 326ppi display).

Just wondering if it’s a downgrade in screen resolution going from a Plus sized iPhone (401ppi) compared to the XR (326ppi).

It is. Some will notice, others won't.

I can tell the difference easily between a regular size iPhone and plus size. I immediately noticed the sharpness difference when I moved from 7 Plus to the X.

It’s clear as day.

I think this question has been answered now the hands on reviews have been released of the XR. The screen appears fine.
Yes, like the 8 is fine. Just not as fine as the 8 Plus.

I notice a significant difference in text clarity between the 7 and 7 Plus. The 7 Plus is definitely better.

I notice no difference in text clarity between the 7 Plus and XS or Max. They all look crisp and clear to me.

It could be OLED that I like better. But I’m not sure. The difference is not as large as going from 7 to 7 Plus. That hits you in the face.

In a minor sense I agree. It’s not huge though and I can say I notice very little difference unless I look for it between my wife’s 8 and my 8+.

I do think Apple are stingy not putting the better LCD in the XR though. The screen is fine but there’s no excuse for not using 1080p from a consumer expectation point of view.

I'd be willing to bet half of iPhone buyers in general don't even know what 1080P means let along 326ppi Vs 401ppi. The question people ask themselves is....does it look good. And every reviewer has said the XR screen looks better than good.

I’m sure you’re right about the average iPhone user but from a technical standpoint and a knowledge of previous products, the best LCD Apple have previously invested in should have been used IMO. If Apple have managed to make a screen with lower ppi look better, then could we see lower res OLEDS as a cost cutting measure in future premium iPhones? I doubt it as the marketing works for certain lines and seems contradicted in others.

Most are the same reviewers that say the 7 & 8 look good, but as many would attest here, those iPhones don't look quite as good as the 7 Plus & 8 Plus, despite the fact that 7 & 8 actually have a slightly better contrast spec than the Plus models.

I suspect some of the reviewers are afraid of getting blacklisted by Apple. I think the closest I've seen to a real assessment about the pixel density from a mainstream Apple-friendly reviewer is a statement that the XR is a good upgrade from the 7 & 8, while not necessarily saying the same thing for 7 Plus & 8 Plus owners.

Whatever one thinks about the XR screen, Apple is leveraging this for all the profit they can get with selling as many units as they can sell. I suspect it would have cost little more to put a Plus-like screen in the XR, but even a fairly insignificant amount per phone would have reduced Apple's overall profit a great deal considering the millions of units that will sell.

Had they put a Plus-like screen in the XR and charged an additional $50 US, it would have cannibalized the XS even more so because the screens would have been closer together, in my opinion, and the difference in cost would have still been $200. Perhaps more who may have been enticed to buy a XS would have gone for the XR. I'm not sure.

And so they put a screen that is very good instead of one that is better, so what do we do? We either pony up for at least a XS and get the best screen and the other refinements or we settle for the XR. For me, I'm still leaning towards the XR. I don't prefer the screen, but I've had a 6s for three years and don't think about its screen. Also, I can't quite come to terms with paying $1149 for the 256GB XS when just about everything I want is in the 128GB XR for $799.

I've toyed around with the idea of buying a Samsung S9 Plus, but I suspect a little digging will reveal issues with them, and I really don't want to leave the Apple ecosystem. My iPhone, 10.5" iPP, and 15" MacBook Pro play nice together.

My thoughts almost word for word. I have a 6s plus 128gb and haven’t given the screen another thought. I’ve considered the Samsung Note but couldn’t live without FaceTime and sync between all devices. My XR 128gb will be here Friday.

Good for you. Please post your thoughts on your XR. I would appreciate that.

Or you do what I did and get nothing for myself. I am waiting with my 7 Plus and will reassess next year.

The XS is a non-starter since it has no Zoomed Display mode option and displays much less than the XR & Max in Standard Display mode.

The Max is a decent phone, but the price for more than 64 GB at US$1249 is just too damn high.

That's a fair point. Another factor is that I need to "upgrade" my wife from her old 4S. She could not care less about tech as long as it makes and receives phone calls and texts, with an occasional use of GPS and internet searching. The 4S is becoming annoying to the point that she has to reboot it more regularly. My 6s, which runs great, will serve her well. I need to upgrade to something and don't really want to upgrade to a 6 through 8-style phone that I will keep for three or four years.

So . . . I can upgrade to a XR or X or XS. All things considered, the XR seems the best overall choice for me, though I'm tempted to get a X. Still, the X suffers from the same lack of zoom display as the XS. Everything is a tradeoff, it seems.

My wife is getting the XR 128 GB, to upgrade from her 64 GB 6s actually. Well, from a 32 GB SE now, since she already traded her 6s for her mom's SE.

The original plan was for me to get the XS Max and give her the 7 Plus, and then in turn she'd give her 6s to her mom and we'd keep the SE as a backup. However, she didn't really like the size of the 7 Plus, and I didn't like the price of the XS Max 256 GB.

Next year I'll reassess. I'm hoping the XS Max replacement will get some nice new features and/or they either drop the price $100 and/or increase the entry level to 128 GB. If I get a 2019 XS Max replacement, I'd then just sell my 7 Plus, and hope I don't suffer from PWM flicker issues.

The Max is a little larger than I want and much more money than I can justify, so I'm with you in wanting a price drop or increase the entry-level storage to 128GB, though I feel the same way about the price of the XS (I think I would be fine with the smaller size).

Please post your thoughts on the XR when you and your wife have a little time to spend with it.

Its because the iPad Pro has a wider color gamut and true tone. Make everything look much nicer. They are the same 264 PPI.

hey guys i am really confused about resolution,

iphone 8 plus has resolution : 1920-by-1080-pixel resolution which makes it 1080p

iphone XR has resolution : 1792-by-828-pixel resolution which makes it 828p right?

where do you guys get this 720p resolution number. Specs of iphone XR on apple website doesn't show number 720p. Please clearify, thanks

People are rounding down to the common resolutions used for media (480, 720, 1080, etc.). Since the XR doesn't have 1080, the next standard-size resolution is 720. In fact the XR does have an 828 display.

It's a matter of preference. Some people want a point-for-point match with their media and the screen, others don't care so much about it.
