Nobody, but Verizon is cocky enough to force you to pay $100/mo for their share plans

AT&T minimum:
$40/mo (450 minutes)
$30/mo (3gb data)
-------------------------
$70/mo

Verizon minimum:
$40/mo (per device)
$60/mo (2gb of data)
------------------------
$100/mo

Plus Verizon forces you off your old grandfathered plan when upgrading phones... AT&T doesn't.

Yeah, I lost my unlimited plan when I upgraded, (or you can pay full price for the phone and keep it).

I'm in a bad area and sadly, Verizon is my best option (if you call 1 bar of 3G with 80 kbps downloads 'best' )

Verizon is the best network in the States, they can charge that much.

And again, Verizon does not force you off your old grandfathered plan. Why do you keep saying they do?

IMO they're not the best where I am and they can charge that much because they can get away with it. Let them start losing customers like Sprint and Tmobile and they wont.
Supply and demand.
And they do force you off grandfathered unlimited data plans if you upgrade to a subsidized phone. You either pay full price for the phone or lose your old plan. Lose lose situation.

So what is forcing you to stay on Verizon? You just sound mad. Go to another network where you can pay much less. Do something instead of just complaining about it.

You make it sound so simple like this is some wireless utopia where every carrier works equally in every area.

Everything I've read is if you want to upgrade your device, Verizon forces you to get a current data plan.

If you do an online chat with them, they'll tell you that all new customers are supposed to be required to pick a "share" data plan.

Yea, I just did an online chat with a VZW wireless rep... I asked if there were other options. They made it quite clear there wasn't other options as a new customer. I laughed at all the scripted "you are paying for the quality of network" comments... LOL, that is some bull **** if I ever heard it.

If AT&T did not have LTE in my area, there is no way I would pay an extra $240+ a year just to have the VZW network with LTE.

Yes, you lose your unlimited data, but you don't have to upgrade to the new Share plan. That's what the OP is making it seem like.

With AT&T on my individual plan.. for 450 Minutes, unlimited texting and 2GB of data I pay $94 a month. So for 6 dollars more on Verizon's plan.. I get unlimited talk/text/2gb of data/free tethering/free Facetime over cellular?

Doesn't sound too bad to me.

You speak as though AT&T's 'Unlimited' is worth anything with their hard throttle.

It's worth a hell of a lot more than Verizon's.

AT&T grandfathered unlimited will be $30 for 5gb of LTE data.

Verizon will force you off your unlimited when you upgrade to either a $30/2gb plan or $60/2gb shared.

To begin with your math is off

$40 for 450 minutes
$25 for 2gb data
$20 for unlimited text
-------------------------
$85

And that's if you are actually ok with throwing $20/month away through text messaging instead of simply using Google Voice or the many other free texting options out there.

Take away that texting charge you shouldn't be paying and it's even more ludicrous a gap Verizon is pulling over the customers eyes:

$65/mo with AT&T
vs
$100/mo with Verizon

Comparing apples to monkeys.
That's your plan with taxes though while comparing it to a plan without the taxes included.
So AT&T $40 for 450minutes, $25 for 2GB data and $20 for unlimited texts= $85
Same from Verizon $100.

I know a number of people like this. They hang onto something that they see as awful, simply so they can continue to complain about it.

OP: I just added an iPhone and a new iPad to my Verizon order, selected individual plans for each and got 2GB on EACH device as well as 450 minutes and 1000 text messages. Total monthly is $110. If I take off the iPad it goes down to $80. Sounds like you're not looking at the site correctly.

You're forgetting the Verizon plan includes unlimited texting. Att doesn't. Add that on and it's only a $10 difference.

Ok..now say I wanted to add tethering and FaceTime over cellular to my individual plan, it would push that $85 before taxes over to like $120 not to mention AT&T doesn't even have LTE here.

fix your numbers there buddy........here, i'll do it for you:

AT&T minimum:
$40/mo (450 minutes)
$20/mo (unlimited texting)
$30/mo (3gb data)
-------------------------
$90/mo

Verizon minimum:
$40/mo (per device) (this is unlimited calling & texting built in)
$60/mo (2gb of data)
------------------------
$100/mo

So, for $10 more on Verizon, you get unlimited calling (good deal if you work from home like me and use your cell phone to call in on project calls, since calling work lines are landlines)

These plans seem perfectly FAIR and the SAME to me.

I'd rather have the OPTION to add texting and not be forced to charg an extra $30 for it

Besides who in their right mind would pay for text messaging instead of Google Voice or the many other free options out there?

I've been to the Verizon site three times already in the last hour. Not a chance in hell of a new customer somehow getting 450 minutes + 2gb data + 1000 txt for $80.

So much for leaving at&t.

Agreed. AT&T doesn't have LTE in Detroit yet. So I was considering switching to VZW for the last few months. Then these plans came out and I now have no choice really but to stay with AT&T. I have never had bad experience with them, so it's not like a bad thing or anything. I just have to sit back and hope LTE comes sooner than later.

VZW did it to themselves.

For me they do have LTE so Im happy.
Now someone who doesnt want those options they have no choice but to pay the $15 extra I guess;)
That's what sucks with both carriers IMO. Less options for the customer and higher prices.

Unfortunately, there is no seamless texting replacement out there. To use GV I would have to give people a separate # to send texts to vs what they see when I call them. I use Kakao with a lot of my friends, but a lot of people still have feature phones or even dumb phones and SMS is the only option.

It's easy. Simply give people your new Google Voice number to call/text, then have your calls forwarded. Done.

Free text messaging. It's a beautiful thing and saves you almost $500 over the life of your contract by being smart and not allowing the carriers to violate both you & your wallet ;)

Cell phone plans are out of control. What should be cheaper these days is now more expensive. They have us all bent over a barrel.

Like others have said... taxes...

No it wouldn't... AT&T wants you to use their mobile share plans for facetime over 3G... which would include tethering... 1GB data puts you at $85... or 4 GB a month would put you up to $110.

Plus, you could jailbreak your phone... which will solve both of those problems as long as you are careful, and since u only have 2 GB data, you will most likely go unnoticed for using an app like TetherMe and whatever app/hack that allows facetime over 3G
