Unfortunately, there is no seamless texting replacement out there. To use GV I would have to give people a separate # to send texts to vs what they see when I call them. I use Kakao with a lot of my friends, but a lot of people still have feature phones or even dumb phones and SMS is the only option.

I hear you on that.
People automaticly try to text your cell number and if you have texting off or rely on other alternative methods you might miss some important stuff.

You didn't read my entire post did you?

I did.

Google Voice displays your Google Voice number when you call people. It is an all in one solution.

People call your Google Voice number and their calls are forwarded, you call people and your Google Voice # is the one they see so they know it's you.

I'm also talking about smartphone plans... not dumbphones, so I ignored that part of your response.

...and, as he mentioned in his post, SMS would still be an issue as GV still doesn't support it. Sure, you can still receive them, albeit in an email form, but there's no way of sending one.

I'm happy with my Sprint plan - $62.49 plus tax every month for unlimited data (no throttle), unlimited text, unlimited calls to any mobile on any carrier, 7pm, and 450 landline minutes. I get 25% off $69.99 plus the $10.00 data fee for a smartphone. I left VZ the second they got the iPhone last year. Not sure why everyone wouldn't be on this?

Last time I looked into this, the only way to make an outbound call it would show my AT&T #, not my GV #. Are you saying if I use the GV app to make the outbound call it shows my GV #?

Also, are there any other gotchas? It's been a while, but last time I looked into it, there were some issues that just made it messy for iPhone users.

Ah...I think this was it.

What are you talking about?

Of course GV supports SMS...

Because their service and data is horrible.
But if you're at a location with decent coverage and can tolerate the slow CDMA speeds then you're good.

Because Sprint's network isn't reliable everywhere. It's flat out pitiful in some places. I really wanted to switch, but with my plans to move to NYC by the end of the year....not gonna happen.

Possibly because, for many people, Sprint's network simply doesn't have enough coverage. I'd rather pay a few dollars and know that my phone will work when i need it to- wherever I may be.

Yep. It will show your Google Voice number. I use it myself to give greedy carriers the finger :D

Open the Google Voice app -> click on the contacts button under the dialer -> then click call and the # the person will see is your Google Voice number :)

All in one solution for free texting and to save around $500/phone contract!

Nice.
I will start using that app when selling things on CL so my real number is not out there.
Good solution.

I swear there was something still messy about it last time I looked into it. So there's not gotchas at all you'd care to share?

If it works seamlessly as you say, I'd even port out my primary # from AT&T to GV....but it has to be as seemless on the iPhone as I hear it is on Android.

Edit: Not sure what kind of math brought you to $500....over 2 years?

My mistake. I meant MMS.

Grrr...this would be annoying to...but not a major deal breaker.

Happy it helps :)

Even for a random craigslister your calling back you don't need them
in your contacts. Simply open the GV app, use the dialer within the app, click call and they will only see your GV #.

Btw just so I'm clear I am not hating on the people who need Verizon because of their coverage area, just am a customer advocate first and foremost and HATE any company that is gouging customers. If AT&T was doing this as well I'd be giving them the same amount of ****! ;)

2 other things to keep in mind.
1. Don’t forget how generous Verizon is with corporate discounts, they only discount the data plan not the phones on the plan ):
2. Don’t forget Uncle Sam reaching in your pocket for 20%+ for fees and taxes.
Break out the string and papercups!

Ive been using Google Voice for over 2 years and haven't had any hiccups whatsoever. Just give people your GV # to call/text, and when you want to call someone do so through the application.

Watch out on the number porting though. I'm not sure but I thought I remember reading that porting your number from one carrier to another (say verizon to att) that doing so closes your account you currently have (verizon). Not sure if it's the same but check with your carrier first. I just did it the safer way (but a little more work) of picking a new GV number and telling my contacts to change the number they have for me.

Also I my math of around $500 in savings over the life of a 2 year contract was based off of using google voice for free texting (instead of paying $20/mo for it) and saving $20/mo X 24 months = $480 saved.

My verizon corparate discount gets me 19% off the primary iphone and data ($39+$30). Extra phones on my account don't get the discount. I hear some discounts go as high as 22% off.

You open the GV app, select a contact and either text as normal (from within the app) or choose to call them. It will then call your number, your phone will ring, as soon as you answer it, it will automatically call them and you'll hear it ringing as though you made the call yourself. They'll see your GV number in both scenarios.

Another HUGE benefit (in addition to keeping anonymous when needed - ie, Craigslist or entry forms) is that you can easily block numbers, quiet the phone during set times each night, and a host of other options not currently available with the standard caller.

One thing that should be noted is that it uses minutes and not data for it's calls.

Verizon
Smartphone ($40)
Unlimited Talk & Text, 1GB Data ($50)

Total: $90 / month

AT&T
Smartphone ($45)
Unlimited Talk & Text, 1GB Data ($40)

Total: $85 / month

With better LTE coverage and no drop calls, extra $5 is worth it. Plus AT&T forces you to pay for FaceTime over cellular...which sucks.

Like others have said... taxes...

No it wouldn't... AT&T wants you to use their mobile share plans for facetime over 3G... which would include tethering... 1GB data puts you at $85... or 4 GB a month would put you up to $110.

Plus, you could jailbreak your phone... which will solve both of those problems as long as you are careful, and since u only have 2 GB data, you will most likely go unnoticed for using an app like TetherMe and whatever app/hack that allows facetime over 3G

You could jailbreak your phone.. until you get a notice from AT&T about it and they FORCE you into tethering... also for $10 more you can up the Verizon data from 2GB to 4GB. Putting the plan on the EXACT same price as AT&T not mentioning the better LTE service.

Yea, Sprint is trash in StL... my work phone gets between 0.1 and 0.5 Mbps download and upload. That is awful, with my iPhone 4S (personal phone) on AT&T I would get between 2-7 Mbps down (Usually around 4-5) and with the GS3, I am getting 15 Mbps Down or so on LTE.

You could also use the Jailbreak features to plug it into the native app I do not know much about them.

I just have to decide if I want to deal with giving everyone a new number.

Grrr...this would be annoying to...but not a major deal breaker.

You could always email photos... I could do that with the main people I send pictures to... they all have their email on their phone.

For me they do have LTE so Im happy.
Now someone who doesnt want those options they have no choice but to pay the $15 extra I guess;)
That's what sucks with both carriers IMO. Less options for the customer and higher prices.

I completely agree. It's just me and someone else are already planning to switch to a shared plan when the new iPhone comes out, and since I want unlimited texting anyway, Verizon's price isn't bad... tethering is a big importance to me and having LTE for that is a big bonus. I live in Mobile, Alabama.. I also go to Detroit and Las Vegas a lot. (Family in both)

All 3 of those cities have LTE support by Verizon, none have AT&T LTE.

So... for my situation and needs I feel Verizon is the superior choice.
