So does the temperature sensor just not work with version 6 on M4 chips? On my iMac I see "Apple SSD" and that's the only thing and even it does not show in my menu bar for some reason
Unfortunately that seems to be the case. I mainly use it for performance monitoring so it isn't a major issue for me, but monitoring temps on the M4 Macs doesn't work right.

You can't expect V6 to know anything about M4. It is hard to keep up with temperature sensors. Even V7 does not get my M3 (not Pro) temperatures correct.

In the past they also did this, once a new version of iStat Menus is out, the new Mac sensors almost always only get recognized in this newest version.

Usually this is an Ok situation since the new version is most definitely superior, you just need to pay. But can’t say the same for this time around.

@Bjango, 4 months later, I'm still experiencing the annoying issue where top processes are not shown when clicking menu items. This is the Setapp version.

I'm also having an issue with the disk drop-down. The disk utilisation section is gone. I used to have that, and when I hovered over it I got a detail pop-up. I must have accidentally clicked that little view icon in there (cross-out eye), now the entire disk utilisation section is gone. How do I get it back? It is shown and enabled in the settings, just not there on the drop-down.

@Bjango 4 months later, the Mac App Store version hasn't been updated yet. Honestly, I'm not buying it unless it is the Mac App Store version, but it seems that all the work you may have put onto the App during the past 4 months, hasn't been implemented on the Mac App Store version... And from what I see, the website version remains the same as well since September 4th.

I mean, you faced a lot of criticism because bugs and issues on the new Version 7, to the point that many people preferred to stay on Version 6, and I hoped that after 4 months, there would be a big update with many of those issues solved and maybe other sort of improvements based on the customer's feedback.

I will happily buy it -now that I'm on Sequoia, the minimum macOS version required- once I see a new version on the Mac App Store with all the work you may have put into it during this four months.

Thank you

Not referring to the App Store version, but the version they have available to download from their site is much newer than the Sept 4 release listed on their notes page

According to their version history, 7.02 is the latest.

This is what I see when I go to their website:

While their downloads page shows the same release version, they've had several new builds released since this. I've also been checking this page often just to see if it's been updated. But I assure you there's been plenty of updates since whatever is listed on their page.

Here's the 'About Me' for their latest release, which looks to be build 2245
I have NO idea why they're not just adding them as another version update. Maybe they're trying to get it all shored up and in a better place for the App Store version? I'm only speculating, but again, releases/updates seem to be pretty active.

They do have a habit of never updating the release notes page for whatever reasons. It is not like the incremental releases are broken or betas, they just never seemed to want to advertise the updates are actually quite frequent. My screenshot actually only shows the date that I manually found an update and downloaded them, and even then I missed a few in between.

As for waiting for features to come back or even bug fix; I am at the same point as when ver 7 was released: this version is simply not production ready. I am only using ver 7 on a test Mac even now, while the rest of the Macs that I manage and are actually used for production have to stay on ver 6. We will only run into problems whenever we upgrade to M4 Macs or later in the future where ver 6 may not have the sensor readings.

Damn, in my case I’m on an M4 Mac. Thank you for your honest opinion.

Given that I am mainly interested in temperatures (yeah, also in CPU/GPU load), I can install TG Pro by Tuna Belly… and get by with Activity Monitor for CPU activity.

Sure, I could also install Stats, the open source project, but I’ve always found it a bit buggy…

TG Pro is the only stats app I have found which accurately reflects the CPU temperatures in my M3 (non-Pro) MBP. My test is to load either E or P cores and watch the changes - Stats and iStatMenus fail to show one set of cores rising in temperature whilst the other does not.

iStatMenus works well for my M3 Pro, and the fan control works again on the latest version too!

Both Stats and iStatMenus have assumed that the M3 (not Pro) presents temperature sensors with the same parameters as the M3 Pro. It doesn't. I use /Applications/Stats.app/Contents/Resources/smc list -t to list the parameters and their values.

I added comments in this thread a year ago https://github.com/exelban/stats/issues/1703. I have not pursued it further - maybe I should!

It really is hard for any developer to get the sensors correct without access to every Mac model.

iStat Menus v6 upgrade version was supported for seven whole years. Seven years for 10 bucks. While I mostly use Stats.app, I must give credit to the iStat Menus guys for their endurance before finally going to v7. I actually might just buy a license just because it's only 10 bucks. I am impressed by their longevity of 6.x.

Hey, given that you use both apps, Stats (open source) and iStat Menus... are they really on par? Or there is one better than the other?

I was using Stats on an old 2014 Mac mini and the performance wasn't that great, and the UI was a bit... Uh I don't know how to describe it, too simple? Too small? But that was on a low res monitor, of course.

They're probably on par IMO. I just bought a 7.0 license today even though I won't use it for very long. Just something about them supporting 6.x inspired me to.

They are not on a par if you compare the system load due to them running. iStat Menus has (and always has had) the least processor load compared with all similar tools.

Otherwise it is a matter of a) what system values you are interested in, and b) look and feel of the interface. Personal judgement - so try them.

For me, having the minimal processor load is important, that’s why I want to buy iStat Menus on the Mac App Store, but that version is 4 months old, outdated compared to the web version.

With the App Store version you need to download the iStat Menus Helper to get full functionality. Seems easier to me to get the web download which has everything. Slightly (not much) cheaper where I live. And you will always have the latest version available.

I like to buy on the Mac App Store whenever I can. Easy access to download and install (some web installers take one device off if you forget to sign out and uninstall the app before formatting the computer, something I do every now and then), and also, Mac App Store apps are sandboxed, so they are safer.

I just don’t understand why making it so difficult or unappealing to buy it in the App Store: more limited as far as minimum OS, outdated… I don’t get it, if they aren’t confortable with the Mac App Store, they can pull it from the Store, and I will install again the Open Source alternative.
