Lol apple supports tethering in Australia, Bluetooth, USB or wifi. Make it a wifi base station and iPad and laptop can connect... I assumed it was the same everywhere?

It is, but in the US it is not free.

Hoping someone can clarify before I purchase for the 15 bucks...

1. So this does NOT create a hotspot, I have to use a USB cable to actually connect it to my mac ?

2. Therefore, I cannot create a wifi hotspot for others to join

Thanks!

Is it only USB or can you do it over wifi also?

No, sometimes in the US it becomes necessary to pay for things twice.

If you connect to your Mac via USB, perhaps then that connection could be broadcast via Internet Sharing?

i wonder if this kind of usb tethering is still trackable via the carriers verus hacking personal hotspot or PDANET or MiWi

It might be trackable. Now personally, I purchased this app with this in mind: I'm only going to use this app if my ISP has a disruption and I need my connection, or if I need some light use when I'm on a trip or some other place without WIFI. Just don't be dumb with this product and use it to stream HD Netflix movies or run torrents and you'll probably be ok. Light use would probably not warrant attention from AT&T. Don't abuse it.

Do I need to be concerned about AT&T monitoring my use of this?

If you use a lot of tethering, AT&T has been known to be able to detect it, and send a warning. Typically this has been for unlimited users who use massive amounts of data, but it might be possible otherwise.

Yes, exactly. For me, it set it up as Ethernet (en4). Set that up in Sharing and you're good to go.

I've used Tether on the BlackBerry and various other tethering applications on Android before I got the iPhone and even after some rather large usage (500MB on a few sessions), I haven't gotten notified from Verizon. Of course, that's not to say iTether is completely bulletproof. If a carrier wants to find out definitively if you're tethering or not, they can. Like Macduke said, use it lightly and you'll be fine.

That kinda stinks. I don't always have my 30 pin connector on me. Looks like the minimal times i tether handylight works fine for me.

I keep something similar to this in my bag at all times: http://www.amazon.com/CableJive-iStubz-Charge-Cable-iPhone/dp/B002LTIXK2

6 inch 30-pin connectors! Although I think I got mine from Meritline.com or something like that. Bought 5 actually, cost like 65 cents apiece. Neat little buggers. Works great if I need a quick charge on the go, but I use them less now with WIFI sync and OTA updates. Great for trips too. Just hang the iPhone off the wall from the charger, lol.

While this doesn't have WiFi hotspot functionality from the iPhone, can't I set that up from my Mac? I remember someone doing it once - getting a connection from a 3g usb dongle, and then sharing that connection over WiFi from the Mac.

ok I guess I will buying this now. I use tethering sporadic when I travel to my family house in the mountains. I guess AT&T will not catch me.

Once you have your Mac on it, I would think you should be able to turn on Internet Sharing via WiFi -- creating a hotspot that way.
