Their site is getting hammered hard. I'm not sure if I have to register the DeviceID on their site first before it will work. If so, this is kinda not good. I don't want my connectivity to be dependent on a license check every time the app starts up.

Same issue here. License: Expired and it says i need to register my copy.

What's the possibility that the Mac part of the App is spyware?

I bought it because I didn't want to miss out... but I'm hesitant to install this on my work laptop just yet...

Derek

Little Snitch hasn't reported any network activity to/from my Mac that is unexpected as a direct result of this. Obviously, I can't be sure that the iOS half isn't doing something bad, since I can't directly monitor my iPhone-to-AT&T traffic in any way. (Hrm, since this app does support connecting over WiFi, I'll have to try a packet sniffer to see if anything other than what I'm doing from the computer is going through...)

Oops

Like I said, my wifi was still on with the iPhone! Here are realistic speeds:

bit the bullet and went ahead and got it anyway before its gone. I already have Handylight but this looks a little easier. Hopefully they can update it or do something so it works with the iPad though not holding my breath as it will probably be pulled shortly.

Works on iPad 2 +3G

I just tried it with an iPad 2 with 3G and it works! I am on the Telus network in Canada though. Kinda lame that you need to be connected through USB - wifi hotspot would have been nice. I guess it is only the first version.

I can't actually see the software details on the website because it's down, but it appears that Tether is for Intel only. Not trying to state the obvious, but I figured a tiny simple app like this might be universal for PPC+Intel.

So mine worked fine up until now. Now I'm getting that, too. That's a big downside of "server-side authentication each boot". I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt right now and assume that their servers are just overloaded. But if it continues, I'm definitely going to ask Apple for a refund...

Am I missing something or is this app not worse than the since iOS 4 built in "personal hotspot" feature which allows you to even create a WEP secured Wifi network for up to 5 devices as well as Bluetooth and USB sharing of the iPhone Data Network?!?

It installs itself as a network driver. Not too surprising that they wouldn't put the effort into developing one for PPC.

Update to the license issue: Just rebooted my iPhone, and I no longer get "Expired", now I get "License: Failed". Looks like overloaded servers to me. (Likely if you HAD been able to connect, then couldn't, it defaulted to "Expired".)

That costs $20 a month. This is a one time fee of $15

Yeah, WIFI hotspot would have been great, along with background use. But I doubt that we will see any updates beyond this first version.

I've always heard that Apple has an automatic API rejection system in place that will auto reject any apps that use undocumented APIs. My guess is that they found a way to do this that doesn't violate this system or somehow masked it so that it could slip through. Maybe they found a way to do it with current, legit APIs? Or did they have a person on the inside? lol

Netshare worked for a surprisingly long time. I can't ever get it to work anymore, however. Hopefully this thing will have a long life too.

Theoretically, won't it work forever if we didn't update our Iphones? Or are updates mandatory?
