FU att and verizon! If I buy 2 gigs, it should be ILLEGAL to charge me an extra fee to tether, that's like saying you charge me extra to put my calls on speakerphone. GO @#$%@ YOURSELVES!!!!

I agreed, I have been paying unlimited data $30p/month on my iPhone 3G/4S for over 3.5 years and I hardly used more than maybe 2gig p/month. They should allowed tether and maybe put a cap so people don't abuse it. So I don't feel bad to use this app. Hopefully they won't catch me.

I get 503 error on Tether.com after buying this app, "License: Expired" and "Please register your copy"! I just paid $15 USD for this, what do you mean license expired?!?

This is likely a scam, watch out.

Try reading the 5+ pages of comments here - it is likely not a scam. It worked until their servers got overloaded with all the new users and, pardon my french, but all the idiots immediately doing speed tests.
 
Although, rather worryingly, their Facebook page just disappeared. I posted a comment to one thread there, and when I tried to post a comment to another thread, it erred out. When I refreshed the page, now all I get is an "expired or mistyped link" page from Facebook.

It had been http://www.facebook.com/Tethercom and obviously their website being down doesn't mean squat to their Facebook profile page... (They had posted to it not 10 minutes ago.)

License Expired on new app Download?

I just purchased and downloaded tether on my iphone 4s. It downloaded fine, but when I run the app it says the following...

Connection: USB
DeviceID:xxxxxx
License: Expired
Packages: 0up; 0down
Status: Please register your copy.

Can anyone help?

ah, interesting, glad that I'm from Germany and with my contract at T-Mobile it costs exactly nothing. Paying extra for that would really piss me off, since i use it a couple of hours every week.

That's how I feel, too......
I rarely ever use or need tethering (seriously), yet AT&T makes us bend over and forfeit money and other services in order to activate it.

It's an outrage. When I was in Asia, it would work automatically without any additional cost.

I'm not sure they would go that far... just pointing out another flaw in the "phone home" strategy.

Why did they have to do it that way? I also can't believe Apple approved this app with the "phoning home" in there...

Short answer is yes but they are not pick up on their android or Blackberry versions of the app. Depends how it is done on iOS.

Very well known blackberry App that has been around for a very long time. Not a scam.
I expect it to be pulled from the US app store in the future but like how all tethering Apps are for Android are blocked from showing up in the market place per AT&T, Verizon and Sprints request. Not like it is hard to get around it on Android and they do require root access to work.

I am willing to bet it will be pulled before long as AT&T and Verizon are going to raise hell about it and Apple will pull it due to those demands.

AT&T and Verizon could in theory do that but they would be having hell to pay if they did. I believe the phone home things is to prevent thieves from making it work. It is a little harder to get around it if it is required to be a legit bought App to work. Very big from the WinMo and Blackberry apps because it is rather hard to make sure things were bought and paid for with out some type of check.
 
So here's a quick speed comparison.

I couldn't get it to launch/register properly in a few tries while I had WiFi disabled (either due to their server issues, crappy AT&T signal in my basement, or a combination of the two.)

But I did get it to launch/register properly while connected to my home WiFi. So here's a speed test comparison. First, my network layout, yes, it's convoluted:

Non-Tethered connection:
iMac -> Gigabit Ethernet Cable -> AirPort Extreme -n base station (Gigabit Ethernet) in "Extend my wireless network" mode -> 802.11n wireless connection -> AirPort Extreme -n base station in "router" mode -> Zoom cable modem -> Comcast

Tethered connection:
iMac running Tether.app -> USB cable -> iPhone 4S running Tether app -> 802.11n wireless connection -> AirPort Extreme -n base station in "router" mode (yes, I confirmed that the iPhone was connecting directly to the "main" base station, not the one the iMac is physically wired to.) -> Zoom cable modem -> Comcast

Speed results, via the Comcast speed test site:

Tethered: 10 Mb/s down, 5 Mb/s up
Untethered (aka: iMac direct): 15 Mb/s down, 5 Mb/s up.

This pairs well with the on-phone testing I've done. From where my phone sits when plugged in to my iMac, I get about 10 Mb/s. If I move closer to the main base station, I get up to 20 Mb/s. (But I can't readily move the iMac. I'll test later with a MacBook Pro.)
 
What's the guarantee that it will work later on? If they pull the app from the app store, will the company still support it? I would love a tether option but I am not to keen on having to "phone home" to do it. Not sure I would need to tether much anyways.

Not to be rude but what's the point of your post? If you're on wifi, why tether? Use wifi. Tethering is 99% used for tethering a laptop or other device that is not near a wifi source, to a CELL source that has data. That's what you should be testing.

It is true if you think about what they did here. All they did was make an App that talks over USB to your computer. Nothing wrong with that.

It just so happens though that the "talking" it is doing is transcribing bits to/from the internet connection of the phone.

The App itself is incapable of "tethering" without the piece installed on your computer that translates what the App is sending into a normal looking ethernet device.

Think of it this way... if I made an app that was called USBTwitter... and all it did was read bits over USB and posted them to your twitter account... then I made an executable that you ran on your Mac that sent text bits over USB... you would then be able to post to twitter _through_ your phone (ie tether).

This is the very same thing... but of course more general.

You honestly can't stop this without disallowing apps to use the USB port on the phone (or trying to explicitly ban it in the developer terms... but it would be hard because there would be plenty of "non-tethering" applications that would want to talk over USB and send bits over the phone's net connection simultaneously...)

It will be interesting to see what Apple does here...
 
Having it ONLY work if it can contact their web site is terrible. It helps against piracy, but ensures legit users could be locked out.
