You got that right, but has Apple?
The U2 complete package is listed at the Canadian store
as $149.99 (CDN)

The same collection at the USA store is $149.99 (US)
By today's exchange rate, that's $201 (CDN)

To boot, every track in the collection is available for individual purchase, unlike on the US store. Wow, that's quite the coup!

I don't know if anyone has already commented on this or not, but I noticed that the Canada iTunes Store seems to be the only one that actually has some separate categories for Canadian music...like I mean, if you browse the Alternative or Rock genres, for example, there is a section for Canadian Alternative, or Canadian rock. I checked out some of the other countries, to see if they do the same thing for the other countries...but it looks like they only do this in the Canadian store. I'm guessing that was probably required maybe as part of the Canadian Content laws? I wonder if that had anything to do with the delay.

And if you go to say...the Rock genre...of the 26 bands under the Featured Artists section on the left..at least 8 or 9 of them (a little more than 30%) are canadian. Same thing in the Alternative section...about 8 of the 26 Featured Artists are canadian...about 30%

I had never even heard of melissa auf der maur, but apparently she was the bass player for both Smashing Pumpkins AND Hole...and I didn't even know she was canadian.

maybe I didn't catch this correctly. But $149.99 CDN is equal to $126.51 U.S so your getting a better deal in the Canadian store.
Even the tracks are cheaper than the American store with the exchange rate.

Forget the election...

Here's the REAL reason to move to Canada!

Now if they could just nudge those taxes down a little.

Maybe the balancing act for all our nothern neighbors who have been left out for so long. Now makes me wish I could buy all my tunes at canadian prices w/canadian dollars!

I was glad that it finally happened just so the rumors would stop but the immediate note of Ireland and others in the rumors gave me this sinking feeling in my gut that it will never stop. Please stop these rumors!!! It will be years down the road that we will hear, "the Zimbabwe iTMS store is now available. Songs are available for $.99 Zimbabwe each, making the cost-per-song the lowest of all available localizations of the store. No word yet as to Mongolia or other localizations." Please save this for something more substantial.

i guess they opened it reallllllyyy last minute, as the apple canada website does not say anything about it yet. not even in the itunes+ipod section

Canadian content requirements are broadcast-only. If Apple was forced to highlight Canadian artists, they were forced by the labels.

It's a smart idea, though, because the Canadian market is very clearly different from the American.

Hey, Ireland was more than a rumor. Ireland was due for October launch and then some copyright wrangling or similar popped it out of the European list at the last minute. We, too, were promised a speedy resolution, and there was much talk that all difficulties had been overcome. But still no store.

Maybe you guys just shout louder. Congratulations, anyway.

So Canada has high taxes and cheap music - you can sing while you send the rest of your money to the tax man.

has anybody done a specific search to try and figure out what labels are missing?

i assume the lack of selection at this point has something to do with the labels/licensing/blah.

edit: i noticed when searching for radiohead that the only result was some classical cover album. what label are radiohead on? parlophone, right?

Radiohead is one of the artists that isn't on iTMS at all. They have no albums on the us store, so....
I also wondered this too though.

Four simple letters: C.R.T.C.

In Canada, every radio station must play at certain ammount of canadian songs per hour, to “preserve canadian culture against the strongest american culture”. They probably required Apple to publish at least 30% of canadian features on all of their pages.

Parlophone = EMI and/or Capitol Records, so there shouldn't be a problem...

this is retail, not media - you don't see HMV or Future Shop being forced to sell 30% Canadian content

as for the iTMS being in Canada.....

HELLLLLLLLYEAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and it's $0.99 CDN per song, even in digital music we have the lowest prices in the world

I never said it need to sold 30% of canadian content. I said it need to display 30% of canadian content in their special features. That could explain why they is a canadian section...

Man, the CRTC is the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission. It doesn't regulate retail stores. The government has nothing to do with the Canadian featured artists. (That's almost certainly due to the unique desires of the Canadian market and (potentially) the Canadian labels.)

Yeah

I am so glad no more wining from Canada now. Thx Apple.

Now when is the ipod mini Rev 2 comming?

This is...

SO GREAT!!!! Thanks Apple!

I noticed that a lot of artists and albums are missing, but I'm sure it's gonna grow. Not worried.

I only think that they should have converted the music into a better quality, at least 160 kbps or even 192 kbps... It sounds better on a sound system than the 128 kbps, wich you can hear the compression. Dont you agree? I pay full fee for a product... Can't I have the best quality offered??? And then i have the choice to convert it into a lower quality for my MP3 player if I want to! Or I'll continue to buy CDs and only buy exclusives from ITMS.

Glad to hear it.

I have a horror story for you. The night U2's "The Complete U2" came out on iTMS, around midnight EST, I decided to purchase it even though I own all U2 albums.
There were too many rare tracks to pass up...even for $149.

Well apparently, I caught the iTMS store just as it was updating, and although I tried to purchase the digital box set I was given a message that it was no longer online or available.
See this link for a screen shot I took:
http://homepage.mac.com/michaelalden/notavailable.jpg

I tried again a bit later, and was given the same message.
I figured the purchase didn't go through as I was never asked for verification of purchase (which I have set by default), so I'd try again the next day.

Well, the next day, I was quite surprised to find not one, but TWO invoice receipts in my mailbox, for $149 each (plus taxes). I had been charged twice for songs that I thought I had not purchased at all.

Needless to say, I wrote to Apple support and pleaded my case. I even mentioned that I had not downloaded any of the tracks.
I was told that my case would be sent to iTMS engineers because they were curious about what had happened.

Haven't heard back, hope it can be corrected.

Give it 2-5 days, IT WILL BE RESOLVED! I've found the Apple iTMS staff is amazing with this stuff. Even when my requests were stupid they answered politely and very professionaly.

Why does the US store have more Canadian music than Canada's Store . . .

Okay maybe not entirely true, but I find it really odd that I can find Broken Social Scene, the Weakerthans, and the Constantines on the US store, but they aren't available in Canada. So much for promoting quality Canadian content. They even have two of the three listed above on the UK version, and the Weakerthans on France.

I guess I will be buying CDs and LPs for a while yet.

Language problem

There are still a few glitches to iron out... From home, I can view the CDN pages in all of their glory.

From work, some of the labels are in French.

"Choisir le Store"
"Parcourir la musique"
"Cheques-cadeaux"

It looks like they simply see where your IP is coming from, and assign some french to your page if it matches a certain block.

Does anyone know of where I can set the language on the Canadian site?

The logical and obvious thing Apple should have done is linking the language with the language used in the OS. French OS? French Store! Simple... I have set my Mac OS X in french and my store is in english...
