I've already requested Jean Leloup, Autechre, Boards of Canada and Squarepusher through the "Resquest Artists" form...

Sorry Laurent, Autechre, Boards of Canada and Squarepusher WON'T be coming to iTunes as they are Warp releases. Check out the very good www.bleep.com for LAME encoded MP3 legal downloads. Sound quality is very good at over 200kbps average (vbr) and noticably better than iTunes downloads. I was also pleased to see that they are offering !K7, Ninja Tune and One Little Indian labels.

Best of all it works with Mac and iPod and there is NO DRM

It's... Exp... en... sive... So I won't use Bleem! I'll stick with physical CDs for those artists...

As for DRM, if I really would have a problem with it, do you think I'll be using iTMS?

No one concerned about the 128 kbps quality?

Strange!(?)

Maybe I'm an audio maniac!?!?!?

1. This is 128kbps AAC, not 128kbps MP3.

2. There's almost a decade between the two CODECs (MP3 vs AAC).

3. 128kbps AAC is also the default setting for iTunes.

4. Maybe you're an audio maniac. :D

What with Canada now up and running, I think it's Ireland's turn to rant. Every iTunes fan in Ireland has been very patient and a lot more calm about not getting your store. Well done and I hope it comes soon.

Well, let's not forget our Japanese friends, eh?

Besides, I'd like iTMS Japan to be available in time for the planet-wide iTMS merger. ;-)

The store seems to be half french, half english right now on mine. It honnestly looks very stupid...

I'm very disapointed about the lack of québecois artists in here, I am outraged!

Anyone have any idea if they are going to have a francophone section like music stores here in montréal?

Seems to be 100% english on my english-version Windows XP, english-version iTunes box right now. If you got mixed content, maybe Apple kind of misunderstood what we meant by "bilingual country"? :D

As for not having and Québécois artists, Céline is in there, so that's at least one. ;-)

when the loonie falls again (i.e. $1 CAN = $0.85 US down to $0.78 US or whatever), that means the our singles effectively become even cheaper when compared with the rest of the world :)

enjoy!

Woot! Take THAT, er... economy! :D

WE DON'T NEED THIS!!! It is VERY STUPID to include EVERYTHING THATS FRENCH in ONE SECTION... French songs are as Alternative, as Rock, as Electronic, as Blues and as Jazz as the English songs...

Indeed. They do need to think about this very soon, before the world-wide iTMS merger.

That would only be normal forward planning if you ask me.

You mean that song that goes "uh-huh uh-huh uh-huh uh-huh"?

That was "I'm On My Way" by the Proclaimers. A quick search didn't turn it up on itms.ca though..

Yeah! Now that you told me the title, I do remember! Thanks!!! (that's been in the back of my head for months, it was driving me nuts) :D

Edit: after a quick search on P2P, just realized that tune was on the Shrek soundtrack. <g>

A shame they only have the Shrek 2 soundtrack available for now.

Apple commits a diplomatic incident : Almost no french-canadian titles on ITMS Canada

I just want to put to your attention that no french-speaking artists are featured (except Celine Dion and Garou from Sony music) are featured in the store.

Not even the classics of french canadian culture are featured.

Names like
Michel Rivard
Beau Dommage
Robert Charlebois
Marie-Chantal Toupin
Éric Lapointe
Mario Pelchat
Gilles Vignault
Félix Leclerc

All those artists are major sellers in the province of Quebec, some of them even became stars in Europe.

This is a bloody shame!

I mainly was surprised that no québec music in french is advertised on the main page. I'm not sure I understand why...

Anyway, music genre isn't always the easiest way to find music...I had to do 4 different genre sections in Archambault yesterday to find the Gorillaz CD...so I do find it practical when it's split into anglophone and francophone. Anyway that's my thought on that!

Marie-Chantal Toupin classic? ;) But you're right, it is a darn shame, it feels like they *forgot* about québec music...

Oh get off it. The store is obviously a work in progress.

This attitude reminds of an ex-girlfriend I had. Every single comment had to be interpreted and re-interpreted until she could find the hidden personal insult in it.

Maybe, just maybe, there are still licensing deals to be worked out? After all, Quebec does insist on being treated and dealt with completely separately from the rest of the country, I would assume the quebec record labels are no different.

one thing that's been bugging me... perhaps you could mean iTMS primarily-English-speaking Canada.

"rest of Canada" to me implies that you feel it is québec vs. all other provinces, which is definitely not the case :) (sorry to get so PC; so unlike me!)

and again, i'm POSITIVE that these omissions will be corrected in time. it's been open less than 24 hours! have you never been in a store that just opened, has boxes everywhere, you don't see what you want on the shelves, so you ask someone about it and it turns out it's in the back?

don't take it personally... a lot of indie stuff i want isn't on there yet either...

Would you like to purchase this song, eh?

You're not Canadian, are you? That's not how "eh" is used. Would be more like "So, you'd like to purchase this song, eh?" You were closer with the "Piss off, eh?" though.

As for DRM, if I really would have a problem with it, do you think I'll be using iTMS?

Sorry - I wasn't trying to offend, just to point you towards Bleep.com, which I've found very good. Also from a UK point of view, it's cheaper than iTunes (unless you want individual tracks), with more of the music I'm into. I have also found DRM can be obstructive even though I use the tracks within the legal requirements, so it's fresh air to see a service without DRM.

As for the plan to bring them to iTMS, I had heard reports to the contrary, although I'd obviously welcome the wider audience for really great music...

Anyway, a big bienvenue to iTMS to all those Canadians who've waited so long (and not always so patiently!) for it - enjoy...

(Oh and while I'm on about download sites I like - trry www.epitonic.com - free tryouts of abstract **** - bad website design, but you can find the occasional gem and it's free (not great quality though...))

The pages appear in french based on the IP address that you are connecting from.

This is craziness.

Therefore, even though I'm in BC, because I'm connected thru what I can only imagine is a Quebec based ISP (Groupe-Telecom), I'm forced to receive french on my iTMS Canada pages.

Connecting thru Shaw appears in English.
