I've just gone ahead and ordered a 42mm SS as well. Delivery is 4-6 weeks whereas the 38mm is in the initial 2 weeks of launch. I'll get to an Apple Store later on today and try both and then cancel one.
Really interested to know which one you cancelled.

See I think its down to personal preference because I reckon the 38" looks neater on those photos.

I agree! I placed my order of a 38mm Steel with black sport band and got delivery for 28th April, I then went into my store in Belfast this morning and fell in love with what I saw.
The watchs look fantastic.

Is that the Space Grey Aluminium? Ouch I ordered one of them and it looks very dark :/ although photos can sometimes give a false impression which I hope so in this case

Are you sticking with the 38mm?

Long time lurker, first time poster. I've registered to share my thoughts having just got out of my try on (London Stratford).

I chose this store on the grounds it would be quieter than one of the flagships and it was pretty chilled. I got there about 0930 for a 1000 try on and actually was able to get seen early.

The store had display cases showing sport, ss and edition models even though you can't try the edition there. There are also working models around the store with ipad minis
that give contextual extra info, updating as you move around the ui which was pretty cool. Try on models weren't working but there were charging cables in the drawers suggesting they will do, this wasn't a concern as I'd already had plenty of time to play with the ui. Key
takeaways are:

- ui felt very smooth and responsive. This was my no1 concern after the verge review but I didn't see any lag apart from when refreshing the maps glance. Even that was no worse than fetching gps position and loading maps on my iPhone 6.

- both ss and sport watches looked and felt good, definitely both quality kit. The ss is noticeably heavier but not in a bad way.

- as others have said milanese loop looks and feels great in the flesh

- sport band also feels great, much softer to the touch and more comfortable than any rubber strap I have had.

- my favourite was the black leather loop. The stone and brown looked very light in colour. I didn't try the blue but it looked better than some photos. It's a kind of rich royal blue, not so bright to be cartoonish. Also the leather loop has magnets all the way round the band and closes very positively. The milanese only has a magnet at the end of the strap but it is very strong and feels secure. I assume these are rare earth magnets, there's a really positive snap as they engage

- both sizes are smaller than I expected, I have 170mm wrists and 42 didn't feel to big

Overall I had already pre ordered the sport with white band in 42 and nothing made me change this. I'm not sold in the white band but didn't like the space gray as much as the silver - not that it's bad just personal preference. I'll see if it grows on me and if not get a black sport or leather loop.

Any other questions about the experience?

I'm in Brent Cross shopping centre right now having just finished my try out appointment at the Apple store here. My experience was pretty much the same. I had an 11:00 appointment and got there about 10:30. I had a play around with one of the demos and it felt really good. It was very responsive. Contrary to people's opinions the difference in size is not that significant and both sizes appeared to be smaller then they look in pictures and video.

I actually got seen 15 minutes early and didn't have to wait until 11:00. I tried on the 42mm space grey sport, 42mm SS with blue leather loop, 42mm SS with milanese loop, 42mm with black classic buckle, 38mm SS with black sport band, 38mm SS with modern buckle and the 38mm silver sport with blue sport band.

I've also preordered the blue leather loop as a second band and I'm glad I did as it looks really nice in person and the magnet system works really well and is pretty strong. However I also really liked the Milanese loop too and I'm kind of torn between the two. I might cancel my blue leather loop in favour of the milanese loop.

It wasn't as busy as I thought it would be and the store wasn't at all over crowded. Some of the staff were just standing around waiting to give people assistance. I'm glad I preordered the 42mm SS this morning as it looks just fine on my 165mm wrist and even looks smaller then my original Pebble. Speaking of Pebble the member of staff who assisted me asked me what it was and I had to explain to her what it was and how it compared to the Apple watch.

I asked about in store pick up and was told it was online orders only for home delivery at the moment although that might change in the future. The two members of staff I spoke to both had preordered with their staff discount but said they have to wait 4-6 weeks which is not a long time in the grand scheme of things considering they are getting 50% off.

All in all it was a great and smooth experience and I'm satisfied I made the right choice and I can't wait to get my hands on the watch now. The next 2-4 weeks is going to be agonising. LOL. That said I'm glad I got in on the earliest delivery window. :)

Agreed. My Apple Store rep even had trouble telling them apart haha!

The same for me. The one assisting me had to keep comparing them to make sure she had taken out the right sized watch. LOL.

----------

I didn't like this one at all but it's not as dark as the photo looks. Looks just like the space grey iPhone.

I tried the 42mm space grey today and it actually looks very nice and stylish. It's actually not as dark as it may seem in pictures and videos. If I wasn't concerned about the sapphire crystal, ceramic back and potentially more band choices I would have been happy with the space grey sport. I have to say unlike others here I actually prefer the extra weight of the SS model. It feels more solid and substantial.

No don't get me wrong, I was hoping the 38mm would be the one (cheaper lol) but struck me straight away of being a girls watch in comparison.

I like your pictures showcasing the watch, but please refrain from "lol girls watch" as your comments or justification for your purchase. The simple fact is many people have smaller wrists, and using "girl watch" as a pejorative is borderline sexist by itself.

I ordered, and preferred, the size of a 38mm watch because my usual watch tastes are smaller and more sleek. If you guys like the larger or huge watches, that's well and fine, but it doesn't make it a "girl's watch" by mere size preference alone. Apple made two sizes for a reason, and more or less it comes down to individual tastes and wrist size. Not because one is a "girl's watch" versus a "man's watch".

Same!!! He pulled out the 38mm Milanese saying this is the 42 lol

Totally believe this - sure it's obvious side by side but if you try one after the other it's actually really hard to tell - only one I was sure was the leather loop as I know it's not avaliable on the 38!

Same in Norwich, virtually nobody there at all. Slightly strange as I thought loads would be 'just having a look'

Honestly, both look huge on you. As a woman (not a girl), I'm still concerned the 38mm will be too big for me.

...

The point is the 42 is small. The 38 is TINY!!, well I shouldn't have done that in caps but er... yeah...

Don't waste energy defending your position on the internet, it's not worth it man. Dudes be mirin' your Apple watch soon enough.

Until you see it in real life on your wrist imho you can't call it. No photos or cut outs match what its like in person. I like small watches, hate BIG ones and the 42mm on a 170mm wrist is in no way BIG (despite the way it photographs) I think more and more will say the same once viewed (unless they are so blinkered by the fact that they preordered the 38mm and wouldn't wait the extended time now for the 42mm)

I took mine today on local Apple Store...

Beautiful, isn't it?

What was wrong with the SS link Band?
Just didn't meet my expectations where as the Milanese's beauty took me by surprise. The link looks old fashioned whereas the Milanese looks um, fresh, modern, classy, unique to the apple watch!!
