Hey, I just found something new...

Apple has added a Check/Uncheck selection to the context menu (right-/ctrl-click menu) in 4.8...

How many has waited for that...? :)

Didn't iTunes support video back in 4.7?? I mean I remember WATCHING vids (music and trailers) in iTunes.
Yes, but they have added some features in this update... (e.g. someone attached a screen shot of a new preference earlier...)

Does anyone know if the video's audio plays over airtunes????
[runs to check]!!!!!

[update] Nope, I guess the update's worthless...

I dont know what to say, iTunes updates use to be so great. But now....

Think i will stick with 4.7 untill apple fixes 4.8 or releases to supposed airVideo or Video Express or whatever.

I wonder what's coming and when.

This iTunes 4.8 update comes on a Monday, which makes me think a new iTunes device (iPod/???) is coming on Tuesday.

The Airport Express promotion that has been running on iTMS expires on May 23, two weeks from today and also on a Monday, which already made me think Airport Express 2 and now makes me think Airport Express 2 with HD support.

Will Apple do video downloads that you play to your TV from your computer through Airport Express 2? Seems a little too nerdy a solution for make-it-slick-and-simple Apple.

supported file formats

.mov's are probably going to be the only file type that iTunes will support. i guess it's because .mov' are more like packages rather than a flat movie file. it contains an audio and video track which is why itunes can play the audio only when you double click a movie file. i don't think the same can be said for avi, i'm not sure though. i think it's pretty obvious that 4.8 is an experimental update and apple is indeed going to enter the video download market with video capable ipods. it's what h.264 is all about.

There won't be an iTunes 5. Where there will, it just won't be called iTunes anymore. They haven't quite decided on a name yet, but it is changing due to the comeing movie download service(using h.264). There isn't anything definate about an Apple portible video playing device and possible and Airtunes for movies.

This is the dumbest thing I have ever heard.
Apple would never dump the iTunes name. It has too much brand recognition.

You might as well say they are changing the name of the iPod or the Macintosh.

Holy S***!

This could be really big - it all seems to be falling into place doesn't it...
Apple plug a Codec over and over in conferences, iTunes gets more and more movie capable....
This is surely pointing to an Archos-Style iPod in the near future!?
It would have a dock that you can use it to record from the TV (like archos) and back-up to itunes.
I imagine the quality would be summit like 480x340 or summit - that way the movies would not actually be all that "big", but very watch-able (anyone seen the screen on the PSP - it's around that).
I'm getting that sneaky feeling again - like apple have something big up their sleeves just to shut up the corporate and IT worlds - the next thing you have to have.....
Tingly!

Has anyone tried playing Apple's HD sample movies they put up for H.264.

Yikes, image quality is poor (compared to QT), and it lags up bad. I tried it in windowed mode and it locked up. Not good at all, I am guessing this is meant for lower quality videos, music videos maybe?

The PowerBook mentioned in your signature falls well below the minimum specs that Apple recommends for smooth playback of HD H.264 video. The minimum specs are something like a 1.8GHz G5. Some of the sample HD clips available from Apple certainly don't play 100% smoothly on my 1.6GHz G5 PowerMac.

did a permission repair and the help in itunes 4.8 is still b0rked... y? work just great in 4.7.1 does anyone else have issues? its not a big prob.. just wonderin... its like i click on the "whats new" or "contents" and nothing happens.. or the search doesn't even work at all...

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but if you go in to your account and click the "Change Country" button, the new countries are mentioned.

I like the video integration with iTunes, but one problem is that yesterday I tried to play a movie trailer in the QT 7 player and it told me that it couldn't play it because I didn't have iTunes installed. I deleted iTunes when it kept automatically deleting all my songs when I unplugged it from my G5, and plugged into my G4. I think I should be able to play trailers without iTunes having to be installed.

So...

we use System preferences to sync to .Mac
we use iTunes to sync to the iPod
we use iSync to sync to the phone

How is this easier?

And where are folders to group playlists?

I agree with some of the other posters. I don't understand what the hell is going on with Apple nowadays.

This update does little to nothing. Tiger is so buggy it makes M$ look like a quality shop. But I have faith...

Its not, while I understand that being able to sync contacts/calendar to your ipod at the same time as syncing music in iTunes is convenient to some, I would like the option of still being able to sync my contacts/calendar via iSync.

I also have 10.4 and also cannot see it in Software Update. So I can confirm you're not alone, we just need someone with Panther to confirm whether they downloaded it via Software Update or manually.

Vanilla

Software Update in Panther doesn't show it either, that probably means that if you really want it your going to have to go to the Apple website and download it manually. Which I think is a good thing. That means that Apple is not trying to force feed an Itunes update on us. That could potentially screw something up. :D

It is for me, at least with iTunes. I always have iTunes open, so having iTunes sync my stuff automatically when I plug my iPod in is great.

Don't get me wrong, though - users should have a choice. It shouldn't be either/or.
