About QuickTime 7.1.5
QuickTime 7.1.5 delivers numerous bug fixes and addresses critical security issues. This update is recommended for all QuickTime 7 users.

Important Notice to QuickTime Pro Users
QuickTime 7 will disable the QuickTime Pro functionality in prior versions of QuickTime, such as QuickTime 5 or QuickTime 6. If you proceed with this installation, you must purchase a new QuickTime 7 Pro key to regain QuickTime Pro functionality. After installation, visit www.apple.com/quicktime to purchase a QuickTime 7 Pro key.

does this update will (again) break my purchased QT7 Pro key?
I swear it was the last time I was buying this darn QT key...

No update has broken the QT7 key, it only gets broken when it goes from 6 to 7 (and it will break with 8).

After a long period of stability on my intel 24" imac following the 10.4.8 update, now;
itunes crashing
vlc crashing
q.t. crashing
safari crashing
...following this most recent update.

Seems to happen especially, though not exclusively, when right-clicking with the (so-called) mighty mouse.

I did the usual disk utility-disk warrior-cocktail clean-up before updating, but there seems to be a conflict somewhere...I suspect in the q.t. folder. I've disposed of old p-lists, but to no avail. I hope things even out. I uninstalled OSS 3D, and that may be the ticket.

Anyway, I'd advise caution...

Sorry if this has already been reported ...

New Quicktime Pro App:

Just opened some 1920 x 1080i HD video footage and selected the new Export to Apple TV option (Default setting).

To my delight the result was superb. The size was 960 x 540.

I exported a 640 x 480 NTSC file too and that was retained at that size. It seems the Export option has built in intelligence and isn't just a dumb preset. More tests to do but so far ... way to go Apple :)

What about audio? 5.1?

I've only just found out about this! Love updates, will be downloading as soon as I get home. :)

I assume that file won't play on iPods? That sounds very cool, but I'm not sure what the solution is for those who own both aTV and iPod. It would be a pain to have to store two versions of everything.

I am really getting the feeling that 5.1 audio isn't one of the features :apple:tv will have. :(
Does Quicktime even support real 5.1? That is, DTS or Dolby, not whatever proprietary nonsense that Quicktime definitely does have?

I know that it didn't in the past, so it wouldn't make sense to send QT 5.1 to the :apple:TV, because no one's home theater could play it. That said, the device does have optical audio output, so I can't imagine it not supporting AC3 pass through. The question is just whether or not you will be able to deliver that content to the :apple:TV in the first place.

I'm bummed... no multiple artist or genre tags :(

I need an easier way to sort all my jazz music, Apple!!! It gets really frustrating when you have so many duets and trios... For example, I have:

"Duke Ellington"
"Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald"
"Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong"
"Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong"
"Ella Fitzgerald"
"Louis Armstrong"

Its so hard to remember which artist to look under... If Apple made it possible to have multiple artist tags, these songs could be found under any of the 3 artists names! It would make my library so much more organized.

I've submitted the idea to Apple, but who knows if they'll ever implement the feature.

ditto when one song appears on two albums, why do we need two copies of the file? it would be easier to give it two separate sets of song info.

Storing movies externaly ??

Hi there , i haven't read all the 11 pages on this thread so it was asked by somebody elsebefore me , i aoplogies.

I have with itunes a library file and a music folder. The folder that holds the music is actualy on an external FW drive, and only the library file it self is on my Macbook.

My question is , does this also apply to a movie folder , other wise my macbook will be full in no time when adding movies to itunes.

Hope i explained it correctly .greetings ,Data.

As I had previously posted, using the export to Apple TV option in Quicktime pro using HDV 1080i source, produces a 720p video. That is not 960x540 but 1280 x 720 (720p). Not quite sure why you got the odd size.

Yes, it is an intelligent resizer - it's kinda silly to upscale video. 720p is the largest size the Apple TV will play. Take a look at the specs @ http://www.apple.com/appletv/specs.html If you're using SD footage it will be converted to 640x480 (the same size as the videos in the store.

Yes, that is the question. Without 5.1 support and better quality of the movie/tv show downloads I am afraid I'll stick with DVDs. Hell, Battlestar Galactica isn't even 16:9. :(

Quicktime can support more than 2 channels of audio, but until the Apple TV is released, we're not going to know if it will support it.

Also, apple's use of H264 video in hardware devices is quite constrained:

Ipod 320x240: H264 Baseline profile 1.3 (up to 760 kbps)
Ipod 640x480 (and iTunes Store): H264 Low-Complexity Baseline profile (up to 1.5 mbps)
Apple TV 1280x720: Progressive Main Profile (as Apple calls it). There might be a maximum supported bitrate of around 5 mbps.

Whether 5.1 sound is supported seems unlikely, but we can hope. I'm with you on that one - no cinema quality sound, then it's a no go. DVDs and HD-DVDs every time for me. :)

 Videos from the iTunes Store on a 42" Full HD screen??? I don't think so

At least some people still care for quality. :)
The quality right now looks bad enough on a 15" MBP screen and that is not even HD.

:( Hmm Getting the same diagonal lines weirdness here in fullscreen coverflow mode:

mac mini 1.5Ghz G4, 1GB RAM, 64MB ATI Radeon 9200 Graphics memory.

Nice and smooth, just the weird lines.

Anyone else? Is this somethng which I can expect to stay?

Thanks

Mac mini 1.42 G4, 1GB Ram, 32 MB ATI 9200...

best ever, very smooth and fast and NO weird lines

Strange, I run my mac mini on a Dell 2007wfp at its native 1680 x 1050, I changed to a lower 16:10 resolution and the lines completley dissapeared. This may be because the non native resolution blurred the lines as to making them invisible or because theres some issues at running at 1680 x 1050

I'm guessing you run at a much lower resolution, Try that resolution.

Good quality is possible though. The HD Spider-man 3 trailer on NBC.com looks pretty great on my MacBook. Of course, it's 720p at 5Mbps - it should look as good as any DVD. I wouldn't want to download 4GB files from the iTunes store though. 700MB would probably be my limit for one hour programs and 1.5GB for full-length movies.

Surround-sound is key to the AppleTV working as a replacement to our DVD player. I hope they figure that out.

Plus, I guess it was already there but you can now drag a song directly from the CoverFlow to, let's say, the Desktop.

Also, you can now get information on a song while playing in mini-palyer mode... sweeet ;)

Can someone please tell me why the damn browser in iTunes STILL uses artist and not album artist?
This is beginning to piss me off.

Just curious, but what is album artist mean? The person who created the album artwork?

Hey, they don't call him "The Album Artist Formerly Known as Prince."

If you have an album from an artist, e.g. Jack Johnson, but one or two songs are Jack Johnson ft X, you may want to group all of Jack's songs from this and other albums together...here 'album artist' comes in...

Yep, that's it. And still the browser uses the artist field, giving you many different entries for one artist if he has features.

I believe it is dependent on what size the file is currently opened at! I exported the Spiderman 3 movie to Apple TV format and at first it was 960 x 456. But I had the file set to "View > Half Size". Once I set it back to Actual Size the export became 1280 x 608. (The original was 1920 x 912).

I usually put the featured artist(s) into the Name field. (E.g. "Crazy In Love (featuring Jay-Z)"). But this is just another workaround to not be able to specify multiple artists.

iTunes stores all content, including video, in the iTunes Music folder.
Your movies would be stored on the FW drive with the music.

I would like to see an option in iTunes to allow you to split that into multiple locations, or keep it the same if you like.
I've always thought that video content should be in the "Movies" folder, anyway.
I guess there are some benefits to keeping it all in the same place, too.

I'm currently using a 500GB FW drive for my iTunes Music folder.
118GB is Music, Podcasts, and Audiobooks.
187GB is Movies and TV Shows.

The video adds up quickly whereas the audio slowly but surely increases.
I could get away with a 200GB drive for Music for quite some time to come, but I could see Video filling up the 500GB by itself in the near future.

Others results may vary, of course.

I guess you could uncheck "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library", but that could get really messy.
