You're incorrect about this. iPhoto does not keep your photos in a single database package file, the photos live in normal hierarchical finder folders just like every other regular files on your disk.

Did they change it back. In iPhoto 08 everything is in a package (that you can browse the contents of) but initially it shows up as one file.

I wonder if the new iTunes will take more steps to break our jailbreaking.

The new features are interesting, but less important to me than some of my Cydia apps.

About the only feature I want out of iTunes is better management over multiple hard drives.

I like letting iTunes control my file location because it's not in some crazy database.itunes package like iPhoto but I would like to have a little control like all my music on my local HDD and all my videos on my external HDD.

Seconded. Would be wonderful if you could just click a 'store file on external drive' button at which point they would appear available as normal when the drive's plugged in and be greyed out with an icon/disappear altogether when it's not. The lack of that support pretty much guarantees I'll never be attracted to buying TV shows or using itunes to watch any video. Perhaps they're holding out for the mass-adoption of cloud storage.

You can do that already.

I do this all the time already. Just keep all your music on your local HDD and consolidate in itunes so it organizes it. And then in preferences turn off copy to itunes music folder and repeat for movies/videos. Then you can turn copy to itunes music folder back on if you want and itunes remembers where the videos are without moving them around. I do this on my TC and it works perfectly, especially for streaming to my :apple:TV too.

Can it autoupdate your music list?

Ok, I like the new features in 8.1, But I still would like to know why on earth can't iTunes automatically resync my music Folder(s). This is version 8 yet If I tell iTunes to pull my music from this folder it still cannot auto resync and add the newly added songs to my library. I have to manual add the folder again to get the update or add them manually. iTunes is still brain dead..OR am I just doing something wrong?

No, you are incorrect about this. iPhoto does keep all your photos in a single package. You can open the package in Finder and view it in its hierarchical folder structure by right-clicking on it and selecting view package contents from the context menu, but Finder will not display it as such under normal circumstances. You can drill down with Terminal like it's normal folders, so maybe it's just semantics and you are correct on that level, but the packaging method allows for indexing and cacheing that "normal" folders don't have beyond Spotlight.

No, they did not change it back...

240 anyone

Great about a speedier update but there are many of us who wish Apple would finally release a 240GB classic. The drives are out there now. And for those who say who needs it, there many many music freaks, DJs, restaurants and so on who want our entire collections with us.

you can still find the photos / music in folders on your hard drive without using itunes / iphoto, and always have been able to.

Speed is seriously needed on the Windows side of things. I switched my library over to my Mac laptop from my Windows desktop because iTunes was getting unmanageably slow on my not-slow-at-all computer. 20,000 song library, about 110 GB. It took a hefty chunk out of my MBP's leftover hard drive space, but the amount of frustration I've saved has been worth it.

The one feature I'd like to see is a change in the 'show duplicates' function. When you're showing duplicates, you can search (filter) the current view as usual. I'd like it to give you the option to show duplicates for anything that matches the filter, i.e.:

I have a bunch of compilations, but I also have some of the songs on the original albums. I don't need two copies of the song, so I go 'show duplicates', then search for the name of the compilation. Currently, this just shows the songs from said compilation. I'd like it to list all the songs it thinks are duplicates of these compilation songs, even though they don't have the compilation's name anywhere in their tags - that way I can compare them (bit rate, length, etc) instead of just blindly accepting that iTunes thinks they're duplicates.

Genius

I just wish my Genius feature would start working again! About 2 months ago it would get half way through the update process and would say network timeout.

And will this finally add the feature that I can copy --any-- mp3 file (read: a file that I have not bought from the iTunes store) from --my-- iPod to --any-- of --my-- computers? Something tells me that iTunes will remain the same pile of DRM dung as before.

The inability to copy an mp3 file off an iPod (without third-party software) has nothing to do with DRM. Granted, having the iPod seen as a device that made piracy easy probably would not have helped Apple in their negotiations with music studios to start the iTunes Music Store, but it's really more to do with the fact that Apple only planned for one-way computer-to-iPod synchronization to make things simple.

If you use mp3 files - or even m4a files - and don't buy anything from the store (except iTunes Plus songs), then there's no DRM. If you think iTunes is a pile of dung for other reasons, okay, but DRM isn't the problem there.

import as itunes plus ... mmh this sentence makes me suspicious... does it mean that imported tracks will get a watermark "just like the itunes plus" files mmh we will see?

Import a file today as AAC 256kbps. After the update, import it again under a different filename. Then compare the two.

Didn't the iTunes Store start selling all their songs without DRM recently?

Although I have a couple iTMS tracks that I got with a gift card, but altered the tags a little to fit my library better, and now the iTunes Store doesn't give me an option to upgrade them :-(

Altering the tags wouldn't affect this. Upgrades are listed based on past purchases, regardless of whether or not they are still in your library.

That's what I would think, but trust me, there is no upgrade offered, although the songs are now in the store as iTunes Plus tracks. It could have something to do with me restoring from Time Machine too, iTunes wasn't able to find the album art after that happened, so I had to do it manually, which was my first clue that iTunes wasn't recognizing the track for what it was.

I'm all for a speed boost. Even on the mac, iTunes is slow.

It usually runs pretty fast for me, but startup is sloooow, and it's a memory hog. Also, does anyone else have trouble with video podcasts locking when when scrubbing or switching out of fullscreen?

The first thing I wondered was, I can import CDs as 256kbps AAC now, can't I? So in the context of this update, what do they mean by "import CDs as iTunes Plus" being a "new feature"? New name, same thing, no? If that is the case, how is this a new feature?

[I import everything as 320kbps MP3 (is this bad? please don't tell me it is), so I'm clueless as to any possible nuances regarding CD-to-AAC.]

Do AAC-imported CD tracks currently have DRM?

Actually now that I think about it, I also have some DRM tracks that I got for free from Lollapalooza, and I'm not being offered upgrades for those either. Maybe I'm missing something? Aren't the upgrades supposed to be offered on the right side of the main page in the store?

It seems like the iTunes 8.1 update will be available very shortly. Apple has already pushed a new version of the Remote iPhone application to fix compatibility with iTunes 8.1. "Soon" sounds like today to me.

Does it have Party Shuffle (or "iTunes DJ") compatibility yet?? That'd be awesome

EDIT: ::sigh:: No...
