Not happy so far. :(

iTunes 8 doesn't seem to be able to do a whole heap - on my machine at least - without hanging. I've had it maybe half a dozen times now. Simple stuff too: launching a song from within album (sub-grid) view, or attempting to edit multiple information for songs. Force quitting the process and parent processes still leaves the application live in the Dock and I am unable to relaunch without a restart which, incidentally, has to be a hard restart because of the application being live, and seemingly unquittable, in the Dock.

Almost, but not quite, enough to make me rate this thread negative. Couldn't bring myself to do it - fear of the flames ;-)

*whispers something about 'public beta'*

Anyone experiencing anything similar?

Derwood

Mines run without a hitch since I installed it....although I'm running with 4 gigs of ram, maybe that helps?? Anyways, why does a song restart when I hit the genius button? That's annoying!

Nice update....I hadn't watched or seen any images of the new version, so was surprised when I was greated with a new thumbnail view of my music. My iPod Touch is grabbing the software update and then it's play time! :D

Did they improve efficiency with large libraries and lots of smart playlists?

Did they improve smart playlist functionality at all?

Still would like to know, thanks :)

I admire your persistence, but I think you and I both know the answer - iTunes 8 is shaping up to be to iTunes 7 as Vuze was to Azureus; the emphasis being on marketing from now on rather than genuinely improved functionality for power users.

The perma-arrows pointing to the iTunes Store is all you need to know about the direction Apple is going here :(

The genius button take you to a playlist, much like Party Shuffle is a playlist. So it would stand to reason that it would start from the beginning of the list. What I did find odd is the song that you start the genius list from sometimes is in the list generated.

When in list view you can choose to view the browser (command-B) . This shows scrollable columns of Genre, Artist and Album. You used to be able to turn of Genre (I don't use that). I don't see the option now.

Exactly! I have no use for the Grid or Cover Flow views, so this is annoying me to no end.

3rd party freeware fix anyone?

Not for the first time on these forums, im stunned at how many people simply can't be assed to read any of the thread before posting. I lost count how many times people either asked the same questions that had already been answered, or posted yet another direct download link for V8

Anyway, never mind the rather meagre 'new' features. Did no one notice that iTunes v8 actually 'sounds' better!? After all, its original and most popular job is for playing music after all.
Myself and a few other certainly noticed..

HD Visualizer???

Anyone try the visualizer with HD TV? The former didn't and was REALLY hoping that iTunes 8 visualizer output was HD and not 640x480!

Anyone? anyone? :D

Thanks!

The hiding away of the already pretty rudimentary import options is all you need to know about the direction Apple is going here :(

horse hockey.

6 posts by you starting today; all negative.

Meh, not really impressed. I'll wait to download iTunes 8 for a week or two, let the others work out the kinks. Running 1.3 on an original iPhone (unlocked/jailbroken) I'm terrified Apple will lock out sync capabilities for old-software running iPhones.

Regarding the updates in general, Apple is getting *so* effing mainstream, it's almost gag-worthy. I want the old niche brand back *lesigh*

Turn off Genre When Browsing???

Theres no "hide Genre When browsing" option anymore?? I have scoured it and can not find it anywhere.

I use the list view with the browser showing artist and albums. Now I'm stuck with Genre and have to label- or override basiclaly- 13,703 items in my library!???

Huh... wow, good job Apple

I'm not one to get excited about things... especially features. However, playing with the Genius stuff (!can't they get another name... recommending music or fixing my laptop in the Apple store is NOT genius in my mind!), i'm finding it actually useful. I've been amazed at how much of my own music I loose and this brings together playlists that actually work and make sense and let me find my own music again. The ability to find related music online also seems to work. Also, it even sounds better. I've turned off my equalizer settings. Does it seem that the drag and drop is improved too!?!

If this is the future of Apple fixes and updates, bring it on. Looking forward to Snow Leopard and more of these refinements. I've enjoyed playing and finding music again... too bad I have too much work right now to play long.

Genuis=Useless

The genius playlists have been pretty off base for me lately, ive also noticed that a halfway decent smart playlist will give you just as good results... Idk, if this was an attempt at a Pandora for iTunes it failed...

its based off metadata, so apparently i have to wait for more itunes users to test out the genius feature b4 i can get halfway decent results...

Pressing OpenApple-J lets you tune the columns to your liking. Are you talking about the three lists up top (Genre, Artist, Album)? I'm not following you here. I didn't know you could turn off Genre and even if you could, I don't know how that would create a problem as you would just leave it in "All".

Could you explain this a bit more.

Is it just me or did they REMOVE the feature to disable those stupid little iTunes Music Store arrows next to something you play in your library. The help menu says that it is disable-able in the GENERAL menu of Prefs (like it used to be), but I am clearly missing something...

Those things are so annoying, REALLY hope they can be gotten rid of.

What? I'm lost... iTunes currently on 7.7.1 and 7.5.5 is out?

Ok, I have iTunes 7.7.1. When I go to Software Update it comes back that I need iTunes 7.5.5?

Ummm, that sounds like a 'downgrade' rather than an 'upgrade'.

Anyone else seeing that? This is odd...

Well, and why isn't iTunes 8 actually 'iTunes 8'?

I posted this is another thread, but thought it might be useful to repeat:

If you tick 'Disable: iTunes Store' in the parental preferences then the arrows go away.

However you can't browse the iTunes store then obviously. Since I rarely do I can live with turning it on manually when required.

just learned about terminal to do this.

close itunes, go to applications - utilities - terminal. open it, select new command. copy and paste this:

defaults write com.apple.itunes show-genre-when-browsing -bool FALSE

then run command. open itunes and genre column is gone.

do the same with:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes invertStoreLinks -bool YES

to turn off itunes store arrow links

Sure...

Yes- the browser window up top.

There used to be a option under preferences to check off 'turn off genre' when the browser window was open. That's gone as far as I can tell. This is different than the genre in list view. That I know is under view options. The option I need was a preference choice.

I fear this is all related to the Genius feature making lists (I'm not going to get into who decides at Apple that someone there is a "Genius" at deciding what Genre an artist falls under ;) )
