16:9

Apple's displays are ~16:10 so as to allow for video content to be displayed as well as palettes and stuff for editing the video.

Wow... I really DID say "16:1." That's funny as hell.
Funnier? I work in video, daily. Yep, even in 16:NINE.

Hehe. It must be the effect of reading 200 posts about time zones.
Sorry. As you were...

U.S. store will be the last to go down. When it falls, you know it's on!!

It's Showtime, capital S

Anyone notice that it's Showtime and not showtime?

Maybe itunes is being renamed Showtime™ ????

Threadjack

Not to threadjack, but the video resolution posts always bother me (works in video).

This is only related to NTSC content. PAL would obviously use different numbers.

720x480 is standard resolution for a DVD (4:3)*. This is in non-square pixels. if you were to watch this on a computer monitor uncorrected, it would looked stretched out.

640x480 or 720x534 would be the same 4:3 ratio but corrected.

720x480 anamorphic video is 16:9, but squeezed so all available pixels are used. This is different from letterboxing where black bars are placed in the actual video itself (note that letterboxing is different than a DVD player actually correcting the anamorphic signal to fit a standard 4:3 display. They both look the same to the end user, but the letterboxed format actually discards a lot of information).

720x405 or 853x480 or 950x534 would be 16:9 in square pixels.

Ideally, if a device is going to use square pixels (like a computer display or iPod display), I'd want at least 853x480 display. This way I can watch 4:3 content corrected with discarding a little information, as well as anamorphic content without discarding any information. It works for me at least.

*Note that acutal broadcast formats in NTSC use 720x486 resolution. And this is only visible resolution. There's a few extra scan lines that are used for other purposes.

Strangely, the US store is still up??

I'd imagine the US store will go down shortly before the event. If memory serves, that's how it usually goes. And as of right now, there are 100 minutes to go....

C'mon Steve!:)

whadda ya mean "confirm"? It's a morning talk show/news show. Since when do those shows care if they've got confirmation (or even the right information)!

Ya got me there!:) I just woke up hearing that thinking, WHAT?! how did i miss that?! HAHA.

Keep half an eye on the finland store. For me it didnt go down when they updated to the C2D iMac and the new Mac Mini's and I was able to report first. *Pats self on back* lol... Just a heads up tho.

P.S. It's not down yet ;) Surely they wouldn't make the same mistake twice...

It is but 2.35:1 is rarely used now, the standard is now 2.40:1

2.35:1, 2.39:1, and 2.40:1 are all basically the same thing. It's just that the standard was modified slightly from time to time. Even if a film is 2.39:1, you'll often see it referred to as 2.35:1.

edit: this is quite the tangent we've gotten on. :)
