I much prefer the name Apple TV.

ITV are very keen talk about their brand (ever since the regional commercial TV companies lost their identities and just became ITV) and particularly so now that they are launching pay to view stations. In the circumstances, it wouldn't surprise me if they cooked up this story and took it to the Mirror so they could talk about their "strong brand" in an article people will actually read because it is associated with today's hot ticket, Apple.

That sounds very plausible to me.

I do think Apple will keep the name Apple TV. Reason: ITV is a highly-recognized brand, unlike the iPad and iOS names, which were relatively uniknown when these brand name copyrights were held by Fujitsu and Cisco Systems, respectively.

There is no infringement. You guys are missing the point of the rename.
The product is not called iTV. If Apple did call it iTV, yes, there would be infringement. But they're not calling it iTV. So, what is the real production name?

Simple! It's called Apple iTV. All they're going to do is introduce the "i". The production name is still different then the british channel ITV.

Just don't sell it in the UK. It's not like Apple is losing a lot by not selling a fringe-device to a small country.

Yes, I for one and many others would not care less if we couldn't buy it. In the UK we have a good selection of TV companies to choose from including the video on demand the Apple TV might offer.

Some of the comments on here really are funny, a few are intelligent. I suggest all the people with no clue what they are talking about either google or read the intelligent comments. For one ITV is not a back street 2 bit company that only started up a year ago. It's been in business a lot longer then Apple has, in fact it started up the same year as Steve Jobs was born!!

Non issue. Stay tuned.

For those that think this product is going to suck, think again.
Apple is trying to introduce not an internet TV as they did with Apple TV. But a real truly interactive television set called Apple iTV. The interactive TV that you know of today is just crap. It is nothing but just gopher system (menu-document design). What they're trying to do is combine Applications with Television to truly bring interactive TV to every household, every educational institutions, and other places that can use the technology.

Allowing Apps to interactive with streaming video or even control and overlap with each other creates new possibilities for everyone. Think about how wonderful it would be to view iTunes U on your Apple iTV. You will be able to watch free educational podcasts on your Apple iTV from major universities around the world.

Put a television set with an Apple iTV in every class room and lots of educational Apps you have a gold mine in waiting. Educational institutions can use this technology with iTunes U to teach every children at a lower cost.

I have my doubts about this claim and is simple fat news to fill in space for friday

Canada has an iTV news channel and nothing coming outta this?
That means UK should be going after iTV in Canada as well, when iTV in Canada has been around a very, very long time.

Who's infringing who?
Maybe UK should shut the F*%^ up Canada iTV may just come after them for using iTV name after Canada established it loooong ago.

Shuv that up your a** UK

GO CANADA

Oh dear, I take it you're not a monarchist then

You should be happy our Queen puts her stamp on your a*s, without us you'd just be Americans :D

For anyone doubting whether ITV will have a claim over the name, check this story out. That's 10 times as bad to be honest.

ITV = Independent Television Authority Who?

They should be thankful, if apple changes its name to iTV their website will probably get more hits (by mistake) but at least their stats will go up

:O ITV was the second television channel in the UK after 'BBC', started broadcasting in 1955, it's notorious for having the highest viewing figures in the UK because it makes programmes that anyone can enjoy.
It's a national institution, I guarantee more people know about ITV in the UK than are aware of apple.

also ITV is just Independent Television (because it was the first channel to not be supported by the license fee) (ITA is something else)

Haha, you AMERICANS really are thick sometimes. How's the Canadian ice hockey team doing? Recovered from being thrashed yet?

Conversely, Apple needs to think of the reputation impact of being associated with tabloid TV!
Who cares?
Without 1080p this will just be a cheap and simple media device aimed at low-tech users who don't care much about picture nor sound quality, so they can sell them low quality iTunes content at exorbitant prices. Just like tabloids do.

I just saw an article about the lack of 1080p on TUAW. The guy was pretty confident that it is not an issue. He almost suggested that the lower resolution is so much better that it's almost worth the premium over the 'standard' HD. :)

That guy... he might be reading this, but I have to say this: that site is not a news blog, it's a fan blog.

Dude...Canada won the Gold medal in the Hockey Game, the USA team was the one that lost...

Anyway, Apple has what did I just read $44,500,000,000 in cash or cash equiv., and from what I've read ITV is worth maybe $4 billion at the highest estimates. Apple earned $4.5 billion in the last quarter in cash alone. Even though this is just an unfounded rumor, Steve Jobs has turned a little crazy lately, and has more cash than God, he'll be able to do whatever he wants and even a Major UK broadcaster is just a face to step on as Steve Jobs continues to walk his crazy billionaire path.

About the Canadian hockey team - I think that was his point exactly.

About the value of ITV - they had almost 4bn annual revenue two years ago, when advertising revenues were hard-hit. You cannot say that a large media group is only worth its annual revenue in a recession. I can't stand ITV but I cannot deny the facts. They are big and they are kind of part of the culture here in a way that no other commercial television channel is.

Besides, however large and powerful Apple Inc is, here in the UK the :apple:TV is not a big seller. It would be foolish on their part to get involved in expensive and avoidable litigation. ITV has tens of millions of customers. :apple:TV might not sell more than tens of thousands per annum here.

Apple might have a case in other countries, but in the UK, iTV is not going to happen. Just as well, it might be time to move away from the 'i' naming. It's getting tired and annoying.

Apple should just buy Britain, Apple should just buy ITV.

The more american's comment the more ignorant you sound as a nation.

Throwing money at things doesn't always work. It may well be what you are used to in the US. However, that is not always the case in the rest of the world.

Are we talking about the same Steve Jobs here? This guy is awesome incredibly brilliant, but he's nucking futs. And he's got almost $45 billion in cash, even if ITV (UK) are now worth 5 or 6 billion, that's only 11-13% of their total cash on hand. If Steve believes this truly will be the next major product for Apple, he'll do whatever it takes, which means whatever he wants.

Simple, call it iTelly.

Or iTube ;)

There you go.

You would think with so many so called 'geniuses" at working at Cupertino, they could come up with a few alternatives. iTV just sounds lame anyway.

iWant to iBarf when iHear a new iProduct.

If ITV won't sell maybe the US military will invade Britain and enforce a "Regime Change" to install puppets sympathetic to Saint Steve.

Maybe Steve Jobs ordered the invasion of Iraq seeing as Americans pronounce it I-Raq. When all the cheap labour kids in China have threw themselves off Foxconn buildings they'll use even cheaper I-Raqi kids instead.
