If ITV won't sell maybe the US military will invade Britain and enforce a "Regime Change" to install puppets sympathetic to Saint Steve.

And do you think that regime change will go as well as it has in the rest of the world where Iraqis and Afghanis continue to kill **** loads of Americans every day?
Give it fifty years and you'll change your silly little attitude when you have to withdraw your little empire when the Chinese come and kick your ass.
Just like happened in Vietnam, but for real this time, worldwide, forever.

I have a feeling D'Illusion's tongue was firmly planted in cheek with that comment.

I do feel that it required an obligatory 'yeehaw' to finish it off though :)

Are we talking about the same Steve Jobs here? This guy is awesome incredibly brilliant, but he's nucking futs. And he's got almost $45 billion in cash, even if ITV (UK) are now worth 5 or 6 billion, that's only 11-13% of their total cash on hand. If Steve believes this truly will be the next major product for Apple, he'll do whatever it takes, which means whatever he wants.

Well then he's going to have to go through the UK Parliament too.

Not. Going. To. Happen.

Go away.

Easy Now!

It's a MASSIVE television channel over here. One of the longest running in the world, in fact. Small-minded Americans, eh? The irony is jaw-dropping.

Also, the iPhone name thing was completely different - that was a product, and Apple were able to buy the use of the name from Cisco. Here, we're talking about an entire company's name. Totally, totally different.

My point had to do with market values of the company. In this respect, Apple is huge and itv is tiny. However, I can see that itv has a large presence in the UK culturally/socially.

On another note, I've read some of your other posts and I'll I can ask as a favour to all us members here that you show a little more respect. I'd like to think that a lot of us are open to civilized, intelligent conversations. You're very opinionated, which is good, but I think you often come off the wrong way. Just my opinion.

im sure apple share holders would love to spend 10-15% of the companies value to buy another company just to use a name.
yes i can see them turning down a dividend for a name makes total sense

1.3% from my calculations. But yes, buying itv out completely wouldn't make sense....

Aapl doesn't pay dividends. Not sure if this is what you meant.

Hahaha, can I just say I'm loving how the UK people are freaking out about a rumor. That being said I'm sorry that your "cultural institution" is this easy to shake up.

Jobs run's Apple like it's his own personal sole proprietorship, combine that with the fact that he's got pretty much free reign to do what he wants and people will buy up whatever he's peddling, and the fact that his company is sitting on more liquid cash than God, and we've got ourselves our very own caricature of a Super Villain.

Will Jobs take away the precious ITV, I don't know, but I doubt there'd be much use fighting against him if he's already decided he's kind of achieved the reputation of being a freight train, I mean they can spend the money to try. He's also kind of gotten the reputation for holding a grudge too for people that cross him. I don't see the big deal for one thing it's a rumor, for the 2nd thing, I don't understand the preciousness of the "ITV" brand that you all feel the need to protect. I read somewhere that you guys think "Americans are just stupid and brash" and think we can just do whatever we like and brought up BP. I seriously think you guys need to chill out a little, take it easy man, go drink a warm one (haha trying to be lighthearted & make a joke...lol you know because you guys drink your beer warmer than us ;) )

I'm loving how the UK people are freaking out about a rumor.

If anything, the Americans are freaking even more.

ITV is rubbish and peddles crappy TV.
Steve Jobs is god and can buy anything.
Apple should buy ITV.
Apple should buy the UK
Steve Jobs should beat the Queen up and bulldoze Buckingham Palace.
Oh man, it's just a rumour. Y'know, a RUMOUR. A R-U-M-O-U-R. A Rumour. Rumour Rumour Rumour.

Well, considering America can't invade anywhere without the UK's help I'm pretty sure we are more then capable of defending ourselves against them. The lack of a gun ho nature sure goes a long way to dealing with situations America is incapable of resolving.

And as has been said, Apple doesn't stand a chance in getting the ITV name in the UK anyway.

Hahaha, can I just say I'm loving how the UK people are freaking out about a rumor.

You can call those "UK people" British.

If anything, the Americans are freaking even more.

You could have called the Americans 'US people'.

Anyway, this dirt-throwing is pointless. So I do all of you a big favour and say this:

Britain couldn't have defeated the nazis without the US and the UK would join the US in no time even if they were to fight Jesus. Can you see, what I've done there? Nazis and Jesus... This thread can die and rest in peace now.

LMAO at ITV worrying about damage to their brand. Doubly LMAO about Adam Crozier's insistence that ITV make quality programming.

Two words in response to both of these statements.

Katie. Price.

'nuff said :D

ISteve Jobs should beat the Queen up and bulldoze Buckingham Palace.
No ****ing way. Apple Store The Mall, complete with diamond encrusted staircase.

Although that would give the UK the THREE biggest Apple Stores in the world, so probably not going to happen ;)

ITV is worried about their brand being damaged by the Apple name??

LOL the Apple brand can only help! Apparently ITV is a pretty lousy network.

What problems with the iPhone 4? It's as close to perfect as you can get in terms of the mix if hardware and software.

Yes, it IS gold dust. Get used to it.

what?

Just don't sell it in the UK. It's not like Apple is losing a lot by not selling a fringe-device to a small country.

what are you talking about 'a small country'? the UK is the second biggest market for Apple, after the USA, and they would lose a whole lot of revenue if they didn't sell Apple TV in the UK.

Ugh, thread meltdown. ITV (the worst UK terrestrial channel) versus Apple (now the worlds worst mobile device peddler). It's like an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object.

Hopefully they'll both annihilate each other. Then we'll be left with the BBC and Android. Everyone's a winner :p.

They could call it iTV elsewhere but call it Apple TV in the UK. Google did it a similar thing with GMail. It went by Google Mail in both Germany and UK because of copyright issues.

The UK is fine now, you can convert your googlemail.com address to gmail.

ITV has been around for a lot longer than Apple and Apple may have to go into a court battle in the UK, where they may loose and very embarrassingly.

If this happens, ITV will probably win, including worldwide rights, and Apple know this.

I just see this as a publicity / press moment for Apple, and it probably won't go as far as court, Apple will just call their product "Apple TV" or something along those lines.

All this is doing is bringing attention to their product (which will inevitably be upgraded in 12 months).
Apple's Press Office (PR company) know this.

Coronation Street >>> Apple Inc.

If Apple did try to pull this off it shouldn't be the ITV execs worrying Steve, it should be Norris Cole, Ken Barlow and Roy Cropper.

Seriously Steve, if you read these forums, believe me, you dont want to fk with Norris, Ken and Roy.

I liked the suggestion made by a much earlier post, to just change the name to something more appropriate, like iCantdofullhdtv.

At least almost everything that Apple does is gold. Unlike ITV who managed to goof up during the World Cup and miss England's first goal.

Wow I didn't know UK courts had "worldwide" jurisdiction! And here I thought sovereignty still existed. This rumor will most likely turn out to be false, but I can't help but imagine the craziness that would happen if the ITV Corporation tried to take on Apple Inc globally, I have a feeling Apple could spend ITV into oblivion several times.

You'd think Apple was well aware of the law regarding Trademark disputes across the ditch. Not exactly a quick process by any measure.

They don't of course, but as with pretty much every content producer on the planet ITV has sold its programmes to every major economy for decades. Therefore the ITV brand has been established globally, even if the brand itself eventually turned to crap thanks to Thatcher's vendetta against Thames Television. Certainly there's enough prior use of the name to warrant multiple court challenges in a wide range of territories.
