ITV boss Adam Crozier admits 'a lot needs fixing'

Mr Crozier says ITV must move more into pay-per-view broadcasting
ITV is a "fairly dysfunctional organisation" and "there is a lot that needs fixing", its boss has warned.

Adam Crozier, the broadcaster's chief executive, admitted that ITV had failed to keep up with the changes in the "media landscape".

He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme ITV needed to move more into pay-per-view broadcasting and the internet.

But he said he "can't envisage a situation" where viewers would have to pay to watch its main ITV1 channel.

Mr Crozier, who took up the top job at ITV in April after leaving Royal Mail, said he had spent his first months at the company trying to make sure he had "a very clear view" of the issues that the broadcaster faced.

"ITV has great programmes and a great brand, the key is rebalancing the business to be much less reliant upon free-to-air advertising," he said.

"What we need to do is turn the organisation around to get it fit for purpose and start competing in these new markets [of pay-per-view and online]."

ITV has already started efforts to move into pay-per-view, announcing earlier this month that it will launch three new high definition channels via Sky in the autumn - ITV2 HD, ITV3 HD and ITV4 HD.

At present its single high definition channel, ITV1 HD, is available for free via Freesat, Freeview, Sky and Virgin.

Those dumb asses are just jealous of Apple, crazy bastards!

Yes, I guess the City of New York was a dumbass as well. Remember a couple years ago when Apple tried suing NYC for using the term "Big Apple"?

Apple is an innovative and ridiculous company at the same time.

"You only have to look at recent problems with the iPhone 4 to see not everything Apple produces is gold dust" the iPhone 4 problems weren't because of the name? WTF?

Also, what is with this culture of lets just sue each other, I understand if they've actually stolen an idea, but just because it's the same name but different context and product so what?

I don't think the iPhone 4 comment was particularly worthwhile or called for; I'm not sure how you can call a product a failure when people like me are waiting two and three weeks to get one.

I agree; it's a vulgar low blow, regardless of the severity of the antenna issue.

Why don't they just call it i-TV, same name but lawsuit avoided. They could easily make the hyphen really small too! All this 'i' stuff is crap anyway. Originally the 'i' in iMac was supposed to stand for internet. But since then they just seem to stick it on anything they make. iPod for example, WTF, when it first came out it couldn't connect to the internet and even now only the touch can connect. I can see the 'i' reason in the case of the Apple TV, but it seems odd to want to change the name now? But I hear the new version is going to be such a different product that they may want to disassociate it from the old one.

I guess we'll have to wait and see - nice bit of free publicity for Apple during the run up to it's release though... I wonder if that's what they planned...

Gotta love apple fanboys. Just shut up and look at the real issue.

ITV plc owns the Trademark ITV for its TV broadcast service.
Apple want to use 'iTV' for its TV service.

I hate ITV just a much as everyone else, but opinions don't change the fact that this name is already taken. just look at the whole gmail thing (and they had, IMHO, an even weaker case)

I expect Apple TV name to continue and the iTV trademark to be forgotten about. Apple will also claim that they never intended to change names.

Didn't Cisco and Apple come to an agreement over the iPhone?

the cisco iphone wasn't really much of a product. there agreement certainly isn't comparable to this case where the name they want to use is already taken by a national TV station which is, obviously, well established within a country.

Not sure why they just don't stick with Apple TV, unless of course they have plans down the road for this thing to take over cable and movie rentals/on-demand, just like iTunes did.

And I'm pretty sure ITV doesn't have a case here... wouldn't you think Apple's lawyers would have made sure the name iTV was locked up back in 2006 when this thing first launched?

The whole issue is Apple has become so innovative in so many ways, that they're now being sued for things they created the idea for years ago!

yeah, because ITV was established after 2006 and they clearly copied apples innovative naming convention...

Classic. This trashy tv station doesn't want to be associated with Apple, pretty much the most successful company of all time, because Apple makes inferrior products? What a bunch of horsecrap. Being associated with Apple would be the best possible thing for iTV.

this isn't really about "trashy tv stations" or "inferior products" or even "the most successful company of all time". this is about a companies image being completely overshadowed by another company using their name. no matter what their image, be it "trashy" (which is only your opinion), or "the most successful broadcaster of all time" (which might be someone else's opinion), their image will be altered by this device if it keeps the same name, and any company should have the right to defend their image, especially when it is a company name and not just a product.

what would happen if Microsoft released a product call the Apple? hmmm

I'm not inclined to believe this, as lets face it, it's the Mirror. But if it is true how pathetic is ITV for "consulting" lawyers over a rumour?

As for ITV wanting to protect its "brand" haha thats laughable, I can't believe any "insider" said that.

Having said that Apple do need to come to an agreement with ITV if they wish to rebrand it, they have been around a lot longer.

As Apple's tactic with the iPhone and iOS was to just announce it and then deal with the legal issues, perhaps ITV responding to rumours wouldn't be such a bad thing.

Perhaps - but this whole thing is sourced from a "trusted Engadget source"

Whether or not you are an Apple supporter or ITV hater is totally beside the point. Let's take this example:

Apple come up with a new gadget, and they want to call it bBC. Could they use the name? No, a big fat NO.

Therefore, iTV for the AppleTV is not going to happen guys.

How can you be furious about a supposedly fact? What it says about you? Maybe iTV could be just "supposedly furious", and not real furious because is just a rumor. Come one, if is true there is money coming your way. Oh boy

ITV = Independent Television Authority
iTV = Apple Television (device)

Two different products. If your brand name is an abbreviation, don't expect nobody to ever use the same set of letters.

Sheesh. And it's a rumour anyway, they may well be getting all fired up about absolutely nothing. If they were that set in their ways, wouldn't they wait to see if Apple does bring out an iTV, then sue? Big businesses likes money.

Exactly what I was about to say. The Mirror is not a serious news paper. Usually they just rant about immigrants and print fatalistic rubbish. they are a joke in the UK.

Page two this C**p. its not in the slightest bit credible.

What a ******** stupid post. The Mirror is not a 'joke', it's just a tabloid, a scratch above The Sun, but only just. The Daily Mail is a joke. The Star is a joke. The Mirror is just a tabloid.
