Yes, I agree 100% with you.

I think Keynote needs more Higher resolution themes as well as more transitions.

Numbers needs more functions and to be integrated with more applications Bento, Filemaker.

Make an online version or all the applications.

Allow Backup with time-machine Easier, with storage directly to iDisk.

Maybe make a bridge like file browser to view all files and integrate Quick Look.

Make it more compatible with office (It never quite goes right).

Features

Numbers:
chart properties that allow to change the width of bars, spacing of first bar between y-axis, ERROR BARS ARE A MUST.

I will be adding as I find things that I need.

I'd like to see some improvement in the Pages File Export thing, too, even if it means saving to formats other than .doc. The current Export process is too much of a hassle.

At least as important, maybe moreso, is the fact that in Numbers, you can't currently split and freeze rows and/or columns. Having a spreadsheet where I have a header row at the top that can't be frozen so that when I scroll down, I can still see it, is absurd in 2008. It's pretty basic stuff.

There are things I really like about iWork and it's the office suite I use most. One is the ease of multiple language spell checking, even if it's a bit flawed. But I wonder how viable it'll be at the current price point. I paid $39 academic price, which is great, but is it worth doing that every year? I look forward to the next version of OpenOffice that should have better native Mac functionality. And the online suites have long term promise.

I reject the notion that iWork is "better" than Office. And that's coming from someone who hasn't had Office on his machine for at least 6 years. iWork is a nice, mid-level suite, mostly usable, nice to work with, missing loads of features, but minus the bloat. It has a place at the right price point. But it won't do for all users in all situations. It's lacking in too many things.

Not going to happen, I'm afraid. Even Apple is part of the problem, with their own proprietary format. They could have used .rtf, or a post-script based format, but they chose not to.

That's what makes OpenDocument even more compelling. It's a tested format with all kinds of ways to ensure that markup is rendered faithfully on the screen. It's completely vendor neutral, and yet Microsoft is supporting it as a first class citizen in MS Office beginning next year, so there's your MS compatibility without having to go through the troubles of maintaining it.

By the way though, Microsoft released their specs for the old binary .doc format earlier this year, so the .doc format no longer has to be a reverse engineered thing; there's no reason that Apple wouldn't be able to go in and make the spec work flawlessly. Not that I would ever go back to a binary format for my data again.

OneNote!
May I ask for what purpose?

Study notes - I need support for tables, line drawings (pen/pencil, basic lines, arrows, shapes, graph outlines, etc), shared sessions, sound/video recording, better note organisation, and generally more focus on notetaking and less on having access to notes wherever you go (like EverNote's syncing ability - I don't want it, I'll never use it, but it keeps telling me about it).

If Apple advertises OS X as being so great for education, I shouldn't need to run Windows via Boot Camp or VM to use quite possibly the best tool for any student.

my wish list (but it won't happen i know):

add a word processor like the old MacWrite Pro
add a graphics program like MacDraw Pro or Intaglio
add a small simple photo editor
add a simple data base

possible but unlikely:

make numbers as powerful as excel with better graphing options. i mean real graphs, not business presentation sh*t. scientific graphs. not as sophisticated like sigma plot or so. just useful. include heatmaps and conditional formatting like excel but more than three formats (how about 64?).

unlikely or impossible:

fully functional web apps to edit pages everywhere.
good viewers for iphone.
fully compatible with powerpoint/excel/word.
maybe a Windows version?

well if i get what i want it would cost $300 but i would be happy to pay it.

I agree with those clamoring for compatibility. To be honest, I don't care how it happens -- I just want a stable way to exchange files written in Pages with Windoze users (other than pdf). The .doc export function works well in some cases, but there are still issues with certain style characteristics and footnotes. If there were better .doc support or a move to a 'universal' file format then fine, as long as I can send pieces of my dissertation to my committee members (I use Pages, they don't) with no issues.

Don't forget you'll probably see new features of Keynote being demoed by Steve in the latest media event. I think there were some new text builds going on where letters seemed to replace each other.

So many, many, many, many things... I have no idea where to begin. Things right off the bat...

Let's START with a WYSIWYG drop down font menu (font dialog box should be WYSIWYG too)

(Live Preview for font color, size, and typeface a la Office 2007 would be nice for competitive parity)

For Numbers there needs to be a shortcut a la Command-T/F4 for modifying cell reference types.

Document protection features/rights management.

Instead of having to Export or Print for pdf, doc, xls, and ppt, integrate functionality in Save As dialog box

A couple of things I'd like to see:

Full OpenDocument format support - import and export.
Portrait and landscape in the same document in Pages.

Dave.

Things I'd like to see:

Apple script support in Numbers (with maybe a VBA converter? ( that will show M$))

Pivot table support in Numbers

Option to default saving in MS office formats

Change the iwork file formats to use a zipped bundle instead of folder based bundle this will make the file format easier to move around on non mac systems.

drop down font list on the format bar to show font name in the fonts style.

A database app that's a bit like access but more geared to creating standalone application databases that can be deployed in various places, like an iphone app maybe?

"There is one guaranteed formula for failure, and that is to try to please everyone." -- Will Rogers

I would say Microsoft have actually succeeded in that. Their software (and partners that build the hardware to run it) can do everything that everyone needs it to.

Apple, on the other hand, create software that adheres to their vision of how things should be. For some people Apple will be on the same page they are, for others they will put up with it. 90%+ however...don't!

(Example, if you want Blu-Ray on a Windows laptop there are plenty out there. On Mac you can't because Steve Jobs says it's a "bag of hurt")

In Numbers--- WAY more formula support. Right away I can pinpoint array and matrices formulas (and transpose).

A formula dialog box with inputs (not just a formula selection box) would be nice too.

You know, if Apple doesn't add anything else to iWork in this version, I'd like it to be OpenDocument support. Now that MS is joining the OASIS group developing the standard, it would be nice if Apple did as well and help to naively support an interoperable document format that works on every platform...

:)

I assume you meant natively
That one missing character gives your post a different perspective than you probably meant

When is this thing likely to come out?

When do you think iWork '09 is coming out? I just got the 30 day trial of '08 over the weekend and am wondering if its worth buying now or waiting til the new one comes out. I think it would come out in November if they are having a iMac refresh event, otherwise, could be MacWorld. Is it worth the wait? Opinions?

Yeah, I am wondering the same thing... when will it come out? Or.. will it come out at all?!?! :p

I think it will be at Macworld, along with iLife '09.

General:
  1. Mobile version for the rumored mini-tablet
  2. A new application that's kinda like iTunes for documents. Designed to preview, organize, and display iWork documents, text documents, and .pdf files. Quick Look, Events, and Skimming are used.
  3. Speed up saving files
  4. Slider for zooming, not just 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%, etc.
  5. Easier edit/save themes/templates
  6. Shapes to have the option of more advanced gradients (radial, three-tone, etc.)
Pages:
  1. Templates like Opening Paragraph + Body 1 + Body 2 + Body 3 + Conclusion Paragraph
Keynote:
  1. Batch change transitions, effects, etc. in multiple slides
  2. Adjustable size of slide thumbnails
  3. More themes
  4. When exporting to .mov, keep the soundtrack in the same file as the movie
Numbers:
  1. Border support in the style of AppleWorks

YES!

Although I think the iTunes thing is pretty much settled in the Finder.

Add to that what may have already been said:
1) Pages needs to CENTER the page when the window is full screen.
2) Numbers needs to export PDF files better, but meh.
3) No more exporting.... just SAVE AS please.
4) One Inspector window that has tabs for "media" "colors" and "fonts" for all iWork Apps.
5) A fourth app that combines Address Book, Mail, and iCal into one Entourage/Outlook type of application.
6) Not only a mobile version that works with soon to be tablet but one that works with the iPhone 3rd generation that will make it a true smart phone for heavy lifters.

This is it so far.... just off the top of my head and really quick.
