Damn... I guess I didn't realize how long 90 days is... January seems like such a long time from now.

Either way, I'm pumped for this Mac App Store. Any time I want anything for Mac software wise I have to either:

a. Go to an Apple Store
b. Download directly to my drive from shaddy to half shaddy sites

Best Buys around me seem fine selling Apple products except for anything software related. Except for Snow Leopard...

What about snow leopard did best buy have a problem with ?

I like the idea of being able to manage my apps through a download store but I'm worried it will restrict where I can install apps. If it means having to authorise computers a la iTunes it will add an extra layer of complexity, sharing between the 5 family pack members of the main apple id.

I want no part of an app store. I like real software that comes on a hard copy. I'm not willing to play the itunes authorized computer game. Leave the concept of app stores to the iToy crowd. Maybe I'm old fashioned but I like real computers and real boxed software.

I would imagine Apple would continue to do DVD/App Store releases for awhile. There are still a large number of people who don't have high-speed internet connections. In addition, many companies need to keep the software on-hand.

I'd imagine that in future the physical DVDs would be available by special request only through Apple's website.

And real CRT screens.

Would be nice to have a slight price drop plus I never use numbers so save some cash there. Be a nice late Christmas present anyway to see what's happening.

WTH is a REAL computer and a REAL boxed software? Downloaded software up to date, better for the environment. You can go buy a box copy, come home install then go online and have to download updates anyway.

Thank you Apple. Please lord let them bring some more powerful page layout tools to Pages. It doesn't need to be as powerful as Indesign, but some more powerful typography features and snap grids would be great.

Either way this is very good news.

no hard copy (or get the DMG to save locally) and no buy for us at work - Everyone sends their stuff to us in MS OFFICE files so it is on all our MACs at work - factor in that Keynote and PowerPoint do not always play well together and you have little reason to have them both at the office so not a big deal

Not even sure why college students would buy this - you can get OFFICE 11 for 99 dollars (academic edition) It is more money, but getting familiarized with a software you will need to work with when you get out of school should be worth the extra 40 dollars.

that's cool
But I hope I can still have the option to buy a physical edition
Or bundled in the iLife/OS X/iWork edition

How's your horse and cart going? Must be hard to find a blacksmith these days.

Probably not, but at $20 each you don't really need one.

Well, given that the academic price for the suite is $39... you're wrong. :D

I like iWork, and have been using it exclusively - it works great with even the latest MS Office document types. But if, in the App Store, it costs more than Office (Campus agreement price is $10 for work, and I can get the suite for home for under $70) - I'll switch back to the Microsoft software.

Well, the way they kept demoing every little feature, showing THREE iMovie trailers, etc. it sure did seem like they were filling up time, and people speculated that something must have been pulled at the last minute. Sure looks like that might have been the case.

Why don't you just be real about it? In other words you can't download one version (Single user) and install it multiple Macs like you could the DVD. Is that what you're concerned about? ;)

The academic price is $71. Your campus has a special arrangement.

(That's another question regarding the app store: What about academic pricing? How will that work? My Apple ID is not a .edu address. I expect it won't.)

I have a feeling that the next 5 years or so are going to be very traumatic for you.

It will be interesting to see if the Mac App Store changes a little to support desktop apps. Typically new releases of Mac apps install over top the previous version, but in the "app store" world, each app lives on its own. I'm assuming that iWork'11, ..., iWork'YY will be separate products. Or they start supporting the ability to charge for upgrades.

Lol, actually no. I always buy family pack licenses where available.

This is total ********, apple is just making the same program and redesigning it without adding any functionality....How about something new, like one note...Everyone in my class is using one note, even the ones with a mac,,

You don't even know what is going to be in the new iWork, and you are already bashing it.

Though I agree, a One Note-like view in Pages is #1 on my feature request list.
